GREAT WALL OF CHINA

Early emperors had built walls in the northern territories to protect their nation against attack from outside forces. These walls were spread across the landscape, and not connected. Great wall was built by chief architect named Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China during the Qin (Ch'in) Dynasty. Qin ordered his people to connect the existing walls together, and to expand them, eventually covering a distance of over 4000 miles. Over 300,000 peasants were forced to help build the Great Wall of China. Many of them died during the construction. After working for several years, the Great Wall of China was completed, and still stands today as one of the great building projects in human history. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Great Wall was enlarged to 6,700 kilometers (4,000 miles) and renovated over a 200 year period, with watch-towers and cannons added. The Great Wall can be seen from Earth orbit, but, contrary to legend, is not visible from the moon, according to astronauts Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell, and Jim Irwin. The Great Wall of China was built mainly to protect the Chinese Empire from northern invaders. Today the Great Wall is the only thing that you can see from outer space. Now it is not used for defense, but used for visitors. I think that the Great China Wall is a great piece of architecture. Not only was it an effective method of protection against invaders, but as time goes by, it is still a very

beautiful and sophistical piece of architecture, and a very touristic site. Perhaps, it might be considered too advanced, considering the time it was built, but the purpose of it justifies the reason behind its construction.

The Great Wall is more than 6,000 kilometers long and 26 feet tall. Its even wide enough to drive on it with a car.
