January 1st, the first day of the New Year, is a holiday. On that day people
give presents to their friends. In England they give their presents on Christ-
mas Day which is on December twenty-fifth.
Children are happy when people give them presents. This is why Jane
and her sisters, Ann and Pat like their birthdays and New Year’s Day. But
Jane’s birthday is also on the first day of January. She does not like this.

Valentine’s Day
A. ͋ҹàÃ×èͧµ‹Í仹Õé

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14. People send greeting cards called
Valentines to their sweethearts or their friends. Long time ago, the Roman celebrated their
feast of Lupercalia as a lover’s festival for young people on February 15. By the end of 5 th
century the Lupercalia festival was changed from February 15 to Saint Valentine’s Day on
February 14.
In Europe and America, Valentine’s Day is not a holiday but during the weeks
before the festival, merchants sell Valentine decorations for Valentines’s Day. Some
students decorate their classrooms with bright red paper hearts. Young people send Valen-
tine cards or flowers or boxes of candy to their loved one.

" Halloween

Manas : What will people do on Halloween?

Jack : They will dress up like a witch or a ghost. In the old time people were afraid
that the ghosts and witches would take them from home so they put lanterns
and candles around their houses to keep the ghosts away. They believed that
the ghosts were afraid of light.
Manas : Really?
Jack : At that time, they did not have enough lanterns but they had many pumpkins.
They cut the holes in the pumpkins and made them like scary faces.
Manas : Why?
Jack : They wanted to scare the ghosts, they put the candles in the pumpkin.
Then, we call it “Jack - o’lantern.”
Manas : I think people now do not believe in ghosts and witches.
Jack : But making a scary Jack-o’-lantern is still part of Halloween fun.

$ Loy Kratong Day
͋ҹ¢ŒÍ¤ÇÒÁµ‹Í仹Õé
Loy Kratong is a Thai famous festival. It is the Thai tradition to offer thanks to Mae
Kongka, the Goddess of water. It is held on full moon night in November. The kratongs are
made of banana leaves in the shape of lotus. They are furnished with flowers, incense
sticks, candles and coins. Thai people launch their kratongs on a river or a canal. They
suppose that the kratongs carry their sins away.
