EDUCATION,A.P.
Name : P. SRINIVAS,
Designation : Lecturer
Branch : Electronics & Communication Engg.
Institute : Govt.Polytechnic for Women, Srikakulam.
Year/Semester : VI Semester
Subject : Analytical Instrumentation
Subject Cod : AEI-603
Topic : Pollution Analysers
Duration : 50 Mts
Sub Topic : Monitoring of Sulphur Dioxide
Teaching Aids : Diagrams

AEI-603.44 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be

able to know :
Monitoring of Sulphur dioxide using
• Coulometry
• Flame Photo meter method

AEI-603.44 2
Basic principle

•The ability of sulphur dioxide to reduce iodine can

be employed to monitor SO2 by using iodine
coulometry in aqueous solution

AEI-603.44 3
Description of Coulometry method

•This method works on Faraday’s law

•It consists a electrochemical cell
•It consists two platinum electrodes
•To prevent reaction between two electrodes, they are
•Separated by a suitable membrane

AEI-603.44 4
Description of Coulometry method

•To measure the current flow through the cell an

ammeter is connected between the two electrodes
•To be analyzed gas is bubbled through the
aqueous solution
•Reaction between the solution and SO2, result a
change in ammeter reading
•The change of current is proportional to the
amount of SO2 present in the sample gas

AEI-603.44 5
Flame photo meter method

•If an atom is excited in a flame to a high energy level,

it will emit light as it returns to its former energy level

•The amount of light emitted, is proportional to the

atoms(SO2) excited by the flame

AEI-603.44 6
AEI-603.44 7
Summary
•SO2 monitoring methods:
Colorimetry,Conductivitymetry,Gas Chromatography,
coulometry, and flame-phtometric detector
•Colorimetry: It is simple, high sensitivity and good
specificvity
•Conductivitymetry: The sample air is analyzed
based on the change of conductivity of the aqueous
solution

AEI-603.44 8
Quiz

1. The electrodes of Coulometry is made of

a) Nickel

b) Platinum

c) Copper

AEI-603.44 9
Important Questions

• State the disadvantages of Gas Chromatography

method
• Explain the monitoring of SO2 using Coulometry
method
• State the basic principle of Flamemetric method
