AEI 603.47 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be

able to know :

• Monitoring of Carbon Dioxide

AEI 603.47 2
Method of monitoring of Carbon dioxide

The co2 is monitored using Infrared gas analyser

AEI 603.47 3
Infra red gas Analysers

AEI 603.47 4
Infrared Gas Analyser

AEI 603.47 5
Basic principle

• The infrared gas analysers depend for their operation

upon the fact that some gases and vapours absorb

specific wavelength of infrared radiation.

AEI 603.47 6
Construction and working

• It consists a two infrared radiation sources

• The radiation beam from the two sources are pulsed

by a motor driven chopper

• The chopping frequency is 2-10Hz

• Out of two chopped beams one is passing though the

sample cell, other beam through a reference cell
AEI 603.47 7
• The detection unit is a permanently sealed unit divided
into two compartments by a thin, metal diaphragm

• Both compartments are charged to the same

pressure, with the gas being measure.

• The sample gas absorbs the infrared radiation

• This reduces the amount of radiation reaching the gas

in the sample side of the detection chamber
Results development of low pressure in the chamber
AEI 603.47 8
• Now the diaphragm bends towards the side of low
pressure

• This movement is converted into electrical impulses

• These impulses are rectified and measured by recorder

• The measured value is proportional to the CO2 present in

the sample

Summary
In this class, we have learnt about

Basic principle: Infrared gas analysers depend for their

operation upon the fact that some gases absorb specific
Wavelengths of infrared radiation.

Chopper: It is used to chopped the continuous signal

It is driven by a motor
