Institute : S.G.P.R Govt. Polytechnic, kurnool
Semester : V Semester
Subject : Linear IC Applications
Subject code : AEI-505
Topic : Introduction To Op-amp
Duration : 50 min
Sub Topic : CMRR & limitations of Discrete OP-Amp
Teaching Aids : Diagrams.
AEI 505.5 1
Objectives:

Upon the completion of this topic the student will

be able to know
• Definition of CMRR
• The need for high C.M.R.R
• Limitations of discrete differential – amplifier
• State how an integrated operational amplifier
circuit over comes the limitation of discrete
operational amplifier

AEI 505.5 2
Definition of CMRR

• It is abbreviated as Common –Mode Rejection

Ratio
• It is defined as the ratio of the differential voltage
gain Ad to the common –mode voltage gain Acm
Ad
CMRR  dB
AC

Where
Ad is equivalent to large signal voltage gain A
AEI 505.5 3
CMRR

AEI 505.5 4
Definition of CMRR contd..

• From figure

Vocm
ACM 
Vcm

Where
Vocm = output common mode voltage
Vcm = input common mode voltage
Acm = common mode voltage gain
• For 741C the typical value of CMRR is 90db

AEI 505.5 5
Characteristics of CMRR

• It is a function of frequency

• It decreases as the frequency increases

• The larger the CMRR the smaller is the common

mode output voltage

AEI 505.5 6
Limitations Of Discrete Op- Amp:

• More components.

• Unreliable.

• High cost and low speed

• Consumes more power.

• Temperature drift problem

• No short circuit protection

AEI 505.5 7
Summary
