AEI-505.21 1
Objectives:

Upon the completion of this topic you will be able

to know :

 Definition of summing amplifiers

 Internal circuit description of summing amplifiers

AEI-505.21 2
Recap

 Applications of op-amp and voltage follower

AEI-505.21 3
Summing amplifier

 Op-amp may be used to design a circuit whose

output is sum of several input signals. such a circuit

is called summing amplifiers or summer

AEI-505.21 4
Inverting configuration

AEI-505.21 5
Summing amplifier

 The figure shows the inverting configuration of op-amp

 It has three inputs Va, Vb, Vc.

 It has three input resistances Ra, Rb, Rc.

 It has a feedback resistor Rf

 By using Kirchoff’s current equation at node V2

I a  I b  I c  I B  I F   1
AEI-505.21 6
Summing amplifier

 In an ideal op-amp, A=∞, R1 = ∞, IB=0, V1=V2 ≅ 0V

AEI-505.21 7
Summing amplifier

 If Ra = Rb = Rc = R, equation (2) can be written as

AEI-505.21 8
Summing amplifier

 The equation shows that the output voltage is equal to the

negative sum of all input voltages
