Introduction to Process Control

• Process control is a statistics and engineering discipline

that deals with architectures, mechanisms and

algorithms for controlling the output of a specific process,

AEI504.1 to 2 2
Process control systems can be characterized as
one of the following forms :
• Discrete

• Batch

• Continuous

AEI504.1 to 2 3
Discrete control system :
• Discrete control systems are utilized in the
manufacturing process where the production of
discrete pieces of product are produced.

• Example :- Motion & packaging applications

Production of Automobile parts
Metal stamping

AEI504.1 to 2 4
Batch Control System :-
• Some applications require that specific quantities
of raw materials be combined in specific ways for
particular durations to produce an intermediate or
end result.

• Batch processes are generally used to produce a

relatively low to intermediate quantity of product
per year.

AEI504.1 to 2 5
Examples of Batch Control System

1. The production of adhesives and glues, which

normally require the mixing of raw materials in a
heated vessel for a period of time to form a quantity
of end product.

2. The production of food, beverages and medicine.

AEI504.1 to 2 6
Continuous Control System :-
• Continuous Control System are used to produce
very large quantities of product per year

• Example : In production of fuels, chemicals and

plastics where continuous control of water
temperature in a heating jacket is necessary.
