AEI405. 78 1
Recap

In previous topic we have discussed about the

• Gamma particles

AEI405. 78 2
Objectives

Upon completion of this topic you would be

able to know about

• Neutrons

AEI405. 78 3
Introduction

• Rutherford has predicted the existence of neutrons

• But not experimental existence was obtained as it was
an uncharged particle
• So , it could not be detected by any particular detector
like cloud chamber

AEI405. 78 4
Properties of neutrons
• It is one of the fundamental particles

• It forms the nucleus of the elements having zero charge

• It is an uncharged particle, not deflected by electric and

magnetic field

• They do not produce ionization in gases

• They are highly penetrating

AEI405. 78 5
• They disintegrate atoms effectively

• Slow neutrons are very effective in bringing nuclear fission

• A free neutron is unstable particle

• The speed of neutrons may be high or low depending on

the source emitted.

AEI405. 78 6
Uses
• They are used in research work in physics, chemistry,
medicine and biology

• Slow neutrons are used in nuclear fission in atom bomb

• Fast neutrons are used in disintegration of nuclei to get

radio-isotopes which have great importance in medicine,
agriculture, industry etc.

AEI405. 78 7
• The neutrons have no charge.

• Neutrons are difficult to detect.

• The penetrating power is small.

• Properties of Neutrons

• The appearance of neutrons

AEI405. 78 10
Quiz
• The charge of neutrons are

• Positive
• Negative
• Neutral
• None
