Theres nothing more fun than growing your own avocado tree' Read the passage. Then answer
questions 1 through 6.

Grow an Avocado Tree!

O avocado
O paper towel
O toothpicks
O glass Ior water
O water
O soil
O Ilower pot
How to Make an Avocado Pit Grow
1. pen the avocado and remove the pit Irom
the center. You can eat the Iruit oI the
avocado. It's yummy and is Iull oI nutrients.
2. Wash the avocado pit under cool water.
You don't need soap to clean it. With your
Iingers wipe away and remove any oI the
green Iruit that might be on the pit. Wash it well and then dry it with a paper towel.
3. CareIully push three toothpicks into the thickest width oI avocado. You want to push the
toothpicks into the pit about a 1/2" deep. It's okay iI you push them in deeper or even a
little less. The toothpicks will help hold the avocado pit in water. It will keep the top part
oI the pit in Iresh air and the Iat base oI the pit under the water. Be careIul pushing in the
toothpicks. They have pointy ends and could hurt iI they poke your hands. It`s all right to
ask a teacher to help with this.
4. Hold the pit over a glass Iilled with
water. The toothpicks will rest on the
edge oI the glass and hold the pit in place
so it doesn't sink to the bottom. Always
check the water level in the glass and see
that the water is covering the Iat part oI
the pit by about an inch. II the water is
below that level you'll need to add some
more. Slowly and careIully pour in more
water Irom a small cup to avoid
splashing.

5. !lace the glass in a bright window. In about three to six weeks the top oI the avocado pit
will begin to split and a stem sprout will come out. The roots will begin to grow at the
base.
6. When the stem grows to about Iive or six inches pinch oII the top set oI leaves. In another
two or three weeks new leaves will sprout and there will be more roots.
7. !ut the avocado pit in a Ilower pot with dirt and watch it grow.
