The Sherlock Holmes Museum is the most popular privately run museum in London, dedicated to the legendary detective

The Museum is run by The Sherlock Holmes International Society, a non-profit making organization.

It is open as a museum dedicated to the life and times of Sherlock Holmes, and the interior of the 1st floor study overlooking Baker Street has been faithfully maintained for posterity, exactly as described in the published stories.

The Georgian town house which the Museum occupies as "221b Baker Street" was formerly used as a boarding house from 1860 to 1936, and covers the period of 1881 to 1904 when Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson were reported to have resided there as tenants of Mrs. Hudson.

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson lived in a Victorian lodging house at 221b Baker Street, between 1881-1904, according to the stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The house was built in 1815 and is listed by the Government to protect its architectural and cultural heritage. In reality, this building had a different street name and number in the days of Holmes's creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Even today, the actual street address is 239 Baker Street, and the museum uses the fictional 221B address only by special permission of the City of Westminster.
