Ernst Gottlieb Baron

German composer, music theorist and lutenist

Born in Breslau, Baron pursued the study of law briefly at the

university in Leipzig before Bach's tenure in that city. In 1720,
while residing in Jena, Baron met with great success as a touring
musician playing the lute. In 1735, after brief appointments in
Gotha and Eisenach, Baron attached himself to the service of
crown prince Friedrich (later "the Great") of Prussia where he
learned to play the theorbo from Leopold Weiss. Baron published lute compositions, works on the art of playing the lute,
and contributed to Marpurg's Historisch-kritische Beitraege. Baron knew Johann Sebastian personally and in one of his writings
referred to him as that "famous Kapellmeister Bach in Leipzig."
