Grammar and Language. “Daily Language Workouts” (Writer’s Inc.), Units 1-11. Focus:
Punctuation/capitalization, agreement, pronouns, vivid verbs and modifiers, active/passive voice,
fragments/run-on sentences

Vocabulary. “Vocabulary Workshop” (Holt Supplement): Lessons 1-12

Note: Time constraints may limit the total number of both grammar/language and
vocabulary units completed during the trimester. This syllabus illustrates the unit choices and
the maximum amount of units to be completed by any teacher.

Reading Skills: Making inferences, using context clues, understanding historical context

Writing: Minimum of two graded essays.


Mandatory Essay: Descriptive Prose. Students will show knowledge of figurative language,
mood, and imagery.

Other Requirements:
• Independent Reading: Book Report
• Analysis of at least one poem, demonstrating knowledge of poetry elements
• Use of Technology (one minimum): PowerPoint, wikis, blog, multi-media
