Woods Runner Lesson Plan

Purpose: To illustrate how authors, researchers, student, and historians use primary and secondary sources to research and write. Students will analyze primary sources and discuss the historical accuracy of the novel, Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen. Learning Outcome(s): Students will understand how the author used primary and secondary sources to create an accurate historical setting and mood in the novel, Woods Runner. Standards Common Core Standards for Math and English: CC.5.R.L.4 Craft and Structure: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes. CC.5.R.L.6 Craft and Structure: Describe how a narrators or speakers point of view influences how events are described. CC.5.SL.1.c Comprehension and Collaboration: Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others. CC.5.SL.1.d Comprehension and Collaboration: Review the key ideas expressed and draw conclusions in light of information and knowledge gained from the discussions. Illinois Learning Standard(s) Addressed: 1.A.2b Clarify word meaning using context clues and a variety of resources including glossaries, dictionaries and thesauruses. 1.B.2a Establish purposes for reading; survey materials; ask questions; make predictions; connect, clarify and extend ideas. 1.B.2c Continuously check and clarify for understanding (e.g., in addition to previous skills, clarify terminology, seek additional information). Standards for 21st Century Learner Addressed: 1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning. 1.1.5 Evaluate information found in selected sources on the basis of accuracy, validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context. 1.2.4 Maintain a critical stance by questioning the validity and accuracy of all information. Instructional procedures: Focusing event: Introduce the novel and read the description on the back of the book. Input from you: Read one chapter a day and the accompanying non-fiction segment from Gary Paulsens novel Woods Runner. Guided practice: After reading each chapter, ask the students if they have any questions regarding vocabulary. Ask the students if they need any clarification of the text. Ask if the students can identify any text-to-text connections. Read the non-fiction segment at the end of the chapter and check for student understanding. Show the students primary sources relevant to the non-fiction segment. Discuss if the author has accurately portrayed the events, setting, and historical time period. Closure: The lesson is repeated everyday until we have completed the novel. At the end of the 30 minutes of shared reading, the classroom teacher takes over and students work on extended response or text-to-text comparison. Check for understanding: At the end of each chapter, ask students if there is any vocabulary that they need clarified. Ask the students if they have any questions or insight into the chapter we just read.
