Achieving success
in the poultry market
This issue of Poultry International is
dedicated to our annual look at the
Worlds Top Poultry Companies, and
this year you will see that our report
is bigger and better than ever before.
Along with the details of 200
individual companies, you will also
nd a market overview and details of
how to use the online Top Companies
database. This Web-based tool is a
valuable resource all year round with
450 companies and growing.
Of course, in any global market
there will be winners and losers.
Some markets are performing rather
well, while some are struggling.
Chinas slowdown is continuing, the
US is still not out of the woods and
Europes problems are as diverse as
its various languages.
Out there somewhere
However, there is still business out
there, and the companies that are
successful are those that are able to
act quickly and work cleverly. This is
important in any climate, but particularly
when many economies are in recession
or stagnant: Nobody wins by sitting and
moaning!
If a customer base is declining, or
customers are not purchasing as much
as might be desired, there are other
potential customers who might be
able to help sales grow. And because
you may have dealt with only one type
of customer in the past, that does not
mean you have to stay in that eld -
reviewing what you do, and who you
do it with, is always worthwhile.
Waste not, want not
Recently, a report was published
that looked at the EU common
sheries policy. It found that through
shery management across all EU
eets, stocks of cod worth GBP2.7
billion (US$4.4 billion) were discarded
in the North Sea, the Channel and
Skagerrak between 1963 and 2008.
While you might ask what relevance
does the European shing policy
have for the global poultry industry,
the example illustrates that even
the best plans can go badly wrong.
Careful planning followed by regular
reviews are essential for any business.
So where should the industry be
going? In a diverse global market, no
one size ts all, but as living standards
rise consumers tend to gravitate
toward perceived higher quality.
Learning lessons is important, but
focus must be kept on the future.
Reading the following pages, I hope,
will give you some indication of
the companies that are successfully
applying the principle.

Philippines poultry
exporters consider China,
Vietnam as possibilities
A new strain of H5N1 found in China and
Vietnam has Philippines poultry exporters
considering those countries markets as
possibilities, according to reports.
We can tap China and Vietnam as possible
markets for our exportable chicken since they
cannot rely on their own production anymore,
said Philippines Agriculture Assistant Secretary
Salvador Salacup. The Philippines is 93%
sufcient in poultry production, according to
Salacup, and the country has a standing ban
on Vietnamese poultry imports.
US, Mexico begin chicken
anti-dumping hearings
The U.S. and Mexican poultry industries
began a dialogue on Aug. 29 in an efort to
resolve Mexicos anti-dumping case against
imports of U.S. chicken leg quarters.
In February, Industrias Bachoco and two
smaller companies petitioned to begin an
anti-dumping investigation of imports of
chicken leg quarters from the U.S., claiming
that U.S. companies were exporting leg
quarters to Mexico at below-market prices.
About 37 U.S. poultry companies and trading
companies joined the U.S. Poultry and Egg
Export Council as participants in challenging
the Mexican industrys claims of dumping.
The USAPEEC presented a proposal
during the hearing aimed at preventing trade
disruptions while addressing the concerns
of the Mexican government and its poultry
industry. Both the petitioners and the
Mexican government reacted favorably to
the proposal. Our legal team is quite pleased
with the results of Mondays hearing, said
Jim Sumner, president of the USAPEEC. We
accomplished everything we had hoped for
and more. We look at the conciliatory hearing
as the beginning of the process to start our
discussions with the petitioners to develop a
workable settlement.
According to Hugo Perezcano, the chief of
the Mexican Unit of International Trade
Practices, the UPCI will publish its preliminary
determination in the investigation on Sept.
30. This will provide the frst real indication
of how seriously the Mexican government
takes the allegations of the petitioners. The
preliminary determination will address three
key issues whether there was injury to the
petitioners, whether there was dumping and
whether interim duties will be assessed on U.S.
companies exporting leg quarters to Mexico.
Perezcano asked that the USAPEEC,
in consultation with the Mexican Poultry
Producers Association, submit its proposal by
Sept. 14. Bachoco will then have until Sept.
30 to respond to the proposal, with hope of
reaching a consensus by Oct. 7.

SNIPPETS
Around the World
The UK governments Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Afairs has
recommended a clampdown on illegal
eggs and egg products before 2012.
The select committee has published
recommendations following its enquiry on
the implications of the Welfare of Laying
Hens Directive for the egg industry.
It found that the UK egg industry will
be at a competitive disadvantage if non-
compliant conventional cage producers in
other EU member states are able to export
shell eggs and egg products after January
1, 2012, when enriched colony cages will
be a statutory minimum across Europe.
The UKs National Farmers Union has
continually raised concerns that farmers
in several member states will have failed
to upgrade their cages in time, and has
lobbied for an intra-community trade
ban. The DEFRA committee has criticized
the European Commissions complacency
over the level of compliance with the
directive and has supported calls for an
intra-community trade ban on the export
of shell eggs and egg products from non-
compliant producers.
NFU board chairman Charles Bourns
said: British egg farmers have spent
around GBP400 million (US$648 million)
on upgrading their farms to meet these
new standards and there is a real threat
that all this efort could be for nothing
if they run the risk of being undercut by
cheap imports from countries which
are still producing eggs in lower welfare
systems. We will continue to work with the
Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Afairs and to lobby the Commission
to ensure this does not happen.

Poultry operators affected
by UK food business
approvals process
The UK Food Standards Agency is contacting
relevant poultry, pig and animal feed groups
about changes to the approvals process for
establishments that require approval under
European Union food or feed hygiene legislation.
A High Court judgment and Judicial Review
established that premises that have changed
food business operators since January 2006,
and those that do so in the future, require a
new approval in order to operate. The ruling
applies to all approved establishments, such as
slaughterhouses, fsh processing establishments
and game handling establishments, whether or
not the nature of their business has changed.
To allow time for interested parties to
adjust to the ruling, the agency plans to
implement changes to its approval process
beginning on Jan. 31, 2012.

Newcastle disease hits backyard
poultry farms in Nicaragua
Nicaragua has reported an outbreak of Newcastle disease in backyard
poultry farms.
The disease is thought to have frst struck in late July when 40
chickens died in the community of El Jobo. A further 468 chickens were
destroyed to stop the disease spreading. Production in the area is mainly
backyard to supply local families.
The source of the outbreak remains unknown, despite investigation.
Movement controls have been introduced and the countrys animal
health authorities have said that they will send weekly follow-up reports
to the World Organisation for Animal Health.
Australian poultry farmers warned of
new avian paramyxovirus
A type of avian paramyxovirus not previously found in Australia had
been detected in a number of pigeon focks in Victoria, Australia, and
resulted in the deaths of a number of hobby pigeons.
Australias chief veterinary ofcer, Dr. Mark Schipp, has said that birds
that have been afected have died suddenly in large numbers, have
sometimes appeared tired or have shown neurological signs such as
circling or head ficking before death. State veterinary authorities have
been asked to review the health of their pigeon or poultry focks, said
Schipp. At this stage, there are no reports of this virus causing disease
in wild birds, but we have asked the Australian Wildlife Health Network
to be alert to this possibility. The Victorian chief veterinary ofcer is
managing the incident with close cooperation from industry and other
veterinary authorities. A national Consultative Committee on Emergency
Animal Disease, CEEAD, has met twice on this issue.
The CEEAD has agreed to a series of measures involving priority
investigations of pigeon and other bird holdings where disease is
suspected and to quarantine afected properties.
Russia poultry output up 8.9% from 2010
Russias poultry and poultry byproducts output reached 233,000 metric
tons in July, up 8.9% compared to the same time in 2010, according to
the countrys federal state statistics service Rosstat.
The number was a 1.7% drop from June. Overall, Russia increased
its meat and related goods production by 7% in the frst seven months
of 2011 compared with the same period in 2010, according to Rosstat.
In July, meat and byproduct output grew 4.5% to 96,900 metric tons
compared to 2010 numbers, a 1.2% drop from June 2011.
FAO urges awareness of
possible bird flu resurgence
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is urging
heightened readiness and surveillance against a possible resurgence of
H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Infuenza on signs that a mutant strain of
the virus may be spreading through Asia.
The latest death occurred in early August in Cambodia, the eighth in
the country attributed to the strain in 2011. Other recently afected areas
have been found in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Bulgaria, Romania,
Nepal and Mongolia.

World outlook By Mark Clements
Poultry is a sector that continues to
grow, and so, despite the political
and economic turmoil of the last
year, there is still some good news.
In the USA, output of poultry
meat increased last year, with 22
companies in the WATT PoultryUSAs
2011 rankings reporting increases in
ready-to-cook chicken production.
Of the top-10 producers, eight posted
increases in RTC chicken production
on an average weekly basis in 2010.
This year really does look to be a
story of two halves in the USA. The
US Department of Agriculture reports
that in the first half of 2011, broiler meat
production was 18.8 billion pounds,
4.8% higher than a year earlier.
Production in the second half,
however, is expected to come in at
18.6 billion pounds, a decrease of 2% in
comparison to the same period in 2010.
Nevertheless, WATT PoultryUSAs
survey found that there are companies
planning investment for the future,
although some producers have
cut back. While its a pity that
the year will not end as it started,
overall, the trend is still positive.
Europes climate remains difficult
While Europes economies are
either shrinking or growing sluggishly
at best, consumers remain cautious
about spending, and producers not only
have to contend with this but also with
competition from overseas. Despite this,
Europes poultry producers continue to
adapt and innovate, and cope with an
ever-heavier regulatory framework and
more demanding consumer base.
Asian growth slowing
While Asian economies may be
outperforming their European and
North American counterparts, growth
is now slowing in China. Despite
higher growth rates than most, the
growth trend is now weakening.
Yet, as our greatly expanded focus
within Top Companies shows, this is
still a highly dynamic region of the
world as far as the poultry industry
is concerned, and this dynamism is
strongly expected to continue. Perhaps
the one cloud that seems to persistently
remain on the horizon is that of disease.

The 200 companies in this issue
are broken down by geographic
region, and then listed alphabetically
within the region. At the end of
each listing is a link that will take you
directly to that company's listing in
our database. This data is updated
throughout the year as new gures
are released. The online database
also contains information for past
years, so you can study a company's
results on a year-by-year basis.

Team effort: The report was prepared the editorial and research staffs of WATT,
and includes data collected by our other publications, WATTPoultry USA
and Industria Avcola. Contributors to this project include: Gary Thornton,
Benjamn Ruiz-Lopez, Mara de los Angeles Gutirrez, Kathleen McLaughlin,
Kayla Kling, Tara Leitner and Bruce Plantz.
Using the online database, data can be
retrieved searching by region, country or
individual company name.
The database provides a listing of major
producers by region, with each entry
providing a link to detailed data.
More
information
online
Across this edition you
will nd 200 company
entries, but going online
to www.wattagnet.com/
worldtoppoultry.html
will oer you details of
at least 450 poultry and egg
producers. The database is being
regularly updated, not only with
additional information for each
company as it comes in, but also
with more companies.
Online, you can find details of
annual revenues, number of head
slaughtered each week, hatcheries,
feedmills, etc., as well as contact and
website details. And because our
Top Companies database is now in
its third year, you can examine and
compare data going back to 2008.

Latin America may offer some
additional cheer, but Brazil in particular
is hampered by a strong currency,
and even its much lauded economic
performance is now slowing.
The picture is not all doom and
gloom, however. In an industry
that remains fragmented, there are
still opportunities for the bold.
Consumption rising
While almost all sectors may currently
be facing difficulties, one thing is for sure:
consumption of meat will continue to rise
in the long term, particularly poultry meat.
The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook
predicts that, over the years to 2020,
meat production will increase by 1.8%
per annum and that this increase will be
driven by poultry and pig production.
The growth in demand over the period
will largely stem from Asia, Latin America
and oil-exporting countries - little surprise
given their economic performance
relative to the developed economies
of the world and population size.
World meat exports are forecast
to rise. At 1.7% annually, the rate may
be lower than we are accustomed to,
but remains, nevertheless, positive.
Challenges and opportunities
But do not think that the road ahead
will be problem-free for the sector.
Volatility in feed prices is set
to continue over the decade and
the industry will be forced to look
increasingly at improving feed efficiency.
Alongside this, patterns of trade
are shifting, as is consumer preference.
While the world as a whole may be
demanding more poultry meat, what
people want and how people want
it is constantly changing, offering
both opportunities and challenges.
And given the ongoing
liberalisation of trade, if the right
conditions are met, any cut can be
sourced from almost anywhere.
As greater efficiency is needed
in use of feed, greater efficiencies
will also be needed in all aspects of
production, particularly to remain
competitive when working with a
heavier regulatory burden and the
economic challenges that are not
expected to disappear any time soon.

mycotoxins
T5X
much more than
a Toxinbinder
T5X has four major actions :
T5X binding components have been
selected in a sophisticated in vivo
model. Mycotoxins do not pass through
the intestinal wall.
T5X stimulates the production of specific
natural detoxication enzymes to catalyse
the elimination of the mycotoxins.
T5X powerful antioxidants inhibit free
radicals and prevent cells' membrane
from degradation.
T5X stimulates the non specific immune
system to strengthen animals

CAN WE
MEASURE
ANIMAL
WELFARE?
In the computerization of climate
control and feeding processes it has
been customary for years to apply
advanced techniques to improve
these processes. It is therefore
strange that in the actual process
of assessing animal welfare we still
rely on subjective and incidental
methods such as periodical audits
in the house or even an assessment
carried out afterwards at the
slaughterhouse.
Developments in sensor technology
enable us to monitor a growing
number of facets of animal
behaviour. Fancom uses camera
techniques to continuously monitor
animal behaviour and growth.
Deviations are visible immediately.
By combining these techniques with
the climate and feeding process
we get insight into animal welfare.
The farmer can control the optimum
growth conditions for his animals.
Only happy and contented animals
give the very best results!
