He is the author of The Scramble for Chi na: Foreign Devils in the Qing empire, 1832-1914 (Allen Lane, 2011) and Empire M ade Me: An Englishman Adrift in Shanghai (Allen Lane, Penguin and Columbia Unive rsity Press, 2003). The latter won the 2004 AHA Forkosch Prize for post-1485 Br itish and British imperial history. He also edited Settlers and Expatriates: Br itons over the Seas (Oxford History of the British Empire companion series, Oxfo rd, 2010) and is the Project Director for the Historical Photographs of China we b archive, a collaboration between scholars at the University of Bristol, the Un iversity of Lincoln, the Institut d'Asie Orientale (France) and TGE-Adonis [http ://] The lecture was held on 12 April 2012 at Tunghai University, Taiwan.
