DeKalb officer learns lessons after off-duty crash

by Andrew Cauthen andrew@dekalbchamp.com DeKalb County Police Officer Chase Trammell grinned when asked what lessons he has learned in the 360 days after an off-duty car accident nearly killed him. Trammell fell asleep at the wheel while on the 75-minute drive from the North DeKalb precinct where he works to his home in White County. The biggest thing that Ive learned is to always, always, whenever you have the opportunity to help somebody out, do itwhether you have the money or not, whether you have the means or notbecause you never know when its going to be you in that situation, Trammell said. You never know when the good Lord is going to say, Im going to put you through this trial and Im going to test your faith, Trammell said. Another lesson he learned is definitely dont sleep and drive. That day I broke the routine, Trammell said. Im definitely not going to let that happen again. After working a standard ing people out, Trammell said. I handle every call as if [this] was my mom or dad. At the end of every ticket I write, my goal is to have people thank me, Trammell said. You kill people with kindness. Although the accident and subsequent medical care nearly caused him to be evicted, Trammell said he kept a positive attitude. No matter what happens Im always going to be taken care of by the man upstairs, Trammell said. You cant just give up your faith because youre going through something bad. Trammell said his fiance Britny Vanderstelt supported him throughout the ordeal. Shes been a trooper, Trammell said. The couple are planning to get married in September at the R Ranch in Dahlonega in an outdoor wedding. Trammell said his troubles made him more and more grateful every day. You never know when your number is going to be called, Trammell said.

12-hour shift on June 19, 2011, Trammell skipped his routine nap before driving home. It was Fathers Day and he wanted to spend time with his dad. Driving on Long Branch Road in Dahlonega, Trammell fell asleep at the wheel and veered off the road. Quickly waking up, Trammell struggled to regain control

of his vehicle, but his vehicle went into a deep embankment, hit a tree, which fell across the car. Contrary to popular belief, no matter how hard you blow the horn at trees, they dont move out of the way, Trammell said. They just dont care. They just let you hit them.

From the accident, Trammell received two broken femurs, four cracked vertebrae, a broken clavicle, a puncture to his left lung and seven broken ribs. He remained hospitalized for approximately two months. A year and 13 surgeries later, Trammell returned June 12 to the job he loves. I just generally like help-

NEWS BRIEF
State Supreme Court rules in 2009 DeKalb hotel robbery lawsuit
In a case stemming from a 2009 robbery at a DeKalb hotel, the Georgia Supreme Court has ruled that juries can be apportioned among all the parties at fault, including criminals and a hotel owner that does not keep guests safe. The rules of statutory construction, including reliance on ordinary word meanings, dictate that an assailant who evades hotel security to intentionally abduct, rob and assault a hotel guest is, at the very least, partially at fault for the brutal injuries inflicted by the assailant on that guest, Justice Harold Melton wrote for the majority in the 5-2 ruling published July 9. As a party at fault, such an assailant must be included with others who may be at fault, e.g., the property owner in a premises liability action, for purposes of apportioning damages among all wrongdoing parties, Melton wrote. The case stems from a lawsuit filed in federal court by Nairobi Couch, who was attacked and robbed by unknown assailants in August 2009 while staying at the Red Roof Inn motel on North Druid Hills Road and Buford Highway in Atlanta. Couch sued the hotels owners for negligently failing to keep their premises safe and failing to provide adequate security. None of Couchs attackers have ever been identified. The hotels owners filed a notice of their intent to argue fault of non-party under a recently amended Georgia law, arguing that their responsibility for damages should be decreased in whole or in part due to the fault of the criminals who attacked Couch. In response, Couch filed a motion challenging the apportionment, or divvying up, of damages and challenging the statute as unconstitutional. The case is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, which asked the state Supreme Court to answer two questions related to Georgia law before ruling on Couchs motion. Justice Robert Benham dissented, arguing that Georgias common law prohibits the consideration of intentional conduct in assessing damages.

Monkey business
of criminal activity followed by the statistics he cited which included more than 200 fire calls and nearly half a dozen murders in the last decade. But the monkey comment is what came to his mind and flowed through his fingertips like second nature. The comment has enraged residents across the county and many are calling for Cornells ouster from a job for which he has not been confirmed. CEO Burrell Ellis seemingly dismisses the issue at least publicly. He said in a statement: Mr. Cornell has explained that his statement was not intended to be racially offensive and, given that he has no record of racial insensitivity, I believe him. Nonetheless, he has received counseling regarding terms that have historical negative connotations and the perception by some that his statement could be received in a manner other than what he intended. Mr. Cornell has apologized to his coworkers, the community and to me, and I have accepted his apology and believe that no further action is required at this time. Gary Cornell is a pleasant enough guy. But he is old enough to know better. Monkeys have long been the animal of choice to degrade people of African descent. Famed ABC sportscaster Howard Cosell, a friend to many African American athletes, was fired on the spot in 1983 for his look at that monkey run gaffe on air. In 1993, employees and civil rights groups protested and picketed AT&T headquarters in Atlanta over the picture of a monkey used to represent African customers while humans were used to portray customers in other parts of the world. This past May, a prominent UCLA surgeon filed suit over a denigrating picture of his head photo-shopped onto the body of a gorilla. It was passed around as a joke by some of his fellow physicians. The height of insult is the depiction of President Obama with monkey-like features in some right-wing publications. Cornell holds a very responsible position in county government. He has supervision of dozens of African Americans. DeKalb County is overwhelmingly African American. At his level and with his influence, even Stevie Wonder could see the inappropriateness of his comment and the firestorm it would spark. Cornell has apologized. The CEO says essentially the matter is closed. But, Cornell has opened an old, ugly wound that cannot be dismissed with a mere apology. The apology said it all. Clearly, I had no intent to be racially discriminatory to anybody, and I apologize for any offense it would have created. That was certainly not in my heart or my mind, he said. The comment was not racially discriminatory. It was indicative of a bigoted mindset, one deeply imbedded in the psyche that comes to the fore as easily as reciting ones ABCs. The fact that Cornell apparently doesnt know any better in 2012 is serious cause for pause. At the very least he should be suspended and required to undergo sensitivity training. And since he has not been confirmed, this might be a good time for the CEO to heed the call of his constituents and make some very necessary personnel adjustments to set the tone for the next four years. Out of the heart the mouth speaks is an old familiar proverb that is applicable to the barrel of monkeys comment made by acting DeKalb County Planning Director Gary Cornell. For him to make that comment was as wrong as two left shoes and just as insensitive. The comment demands swift corrective action the least of which should be suspension without pay and mandatory sensitivity training. This is not a pat on the back, its OK, we know youre sorry type of offense. Some infractions, albeit unintended, are career decisions. Instruction: Engage mind before opening mouth or typing. According to news accounts, Cornell said in an email, these properties are like a barrel full of monkeys. He was making reference to a rundown apartment complex off of North Hairston Road. Perhaps a better choice of words might have been a hotbed

New city? No, CID!

instead proposed a budget of $2.7 million. In 2005, Sandy Springs in north Fulton County kicked off this deluge, followed by Milton (December 2006), Chattahoochee Hills (June 2007), Dunwoody (December 2008) and Peachtree Corners (November 2011). Supporters of these bedroom community conversions to cities felt overtaxed and underserved by their county governments. In almost every case projected revenues for these new municipalities were overforecast and expenses were typically under-forecast. The idea of local control was attractive, but its reality was also quite expensive. Projected savings and lower tax rates almost never actually materialized. By contrast there are two Community Improvement Districts (CIDs)Gwinnett Village and Stone Mountainboth near the newest city of Peachtree Corners. The Stone Mountain CID, in east DeKalb County, is expanding with an additional 90 property owners joining it, and increasing the total property value of the district from $241 million to $332 million. This and other self-taxing districts, including Buckhead, Cumberland and Perimeter Center among others, have reduced crime, improved infrastructure, and removed garbage, junk signs and graffiti. In many ways they performed tasks once left to municipalitiesall at a much lower price-point. The Stone Mountain group also is working to add 2,000 new jobs to the area by 2013. By contrast, according to a recent financial analysis by DeKalb County government, the even newer potential city of Brookhaven in north DeKalb would begin operations with a projected deficit of $360,554. The county government analysis updated an earlier study by the CVI, which forecast a small surplus of $135,000 prior to recent and ongoing declines in the tax digest and property values across DeKalb County. City governments, and the bureaucracies that they typically employ, also incur long-term debt and expense in the form of employee pension/retirement and health care obligations. These costs for thousands of retirees in larger cities across the nation are pushing many municipalities and some states to their financial brink. Admittedly a new model, employing a mix of typical municipal employees and largely contracted private services and vendors is also working here in Georgia. The city of Sandy Springs was recently profiled in The New York Times (Sunday Business, June 24), and recognized for keeping its full-time employee headcount to seven. And while we can see this hybrid model can work to varying degrees, many of these new cities now also see the benefits of study and detail in the planning stages as opposed to a rush to charter and formation. Sandy Springs was decades in the making, Dunwoody, more than a decade and yet for some reason, Brookhaven is being rushed through the paces in just more than a year. Even most of its potential residents are unclear on what the boundaries might be for their new city. Questions about policing levels, budget deficits and charges and counter-charges are flying. Typically when a major governmental shift is being rushed, the real rationale does not surface until later. As north DeKalb voters above I-85 at North Druid Hills Road begin early voting this week on the city of Brokehaven referendum, I will again counsel as I often do regarding the curious and unclear wording of Georgias proposed constitutional amendments. When in doubt, vote No. Or better yet, try a CID first, and see if that doesnt give you what you want and need at a much lower asking price.

Based on the limited services planned for startup operations in Peachtree Corners, CVI forecast a first-year budget of $760,917. However, the freshly elected mayor and city council have

Pennsylvania's high-profile pedophile scandals

The Penn State and Philadelphia archdiocese cases are parallel examples of two grand, exalted institutions fleeing their moral responsibilities.
digest, because of where it happened and whom it involved. For decades Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was a virtual icon of probity in his profession. In a business whose moral climate can sometimes resemble a sewer, he did things the right way. He didn't cheat, he held his players to a high standard of behavior, and he saw to it that they went to class and graduated. He accepted a pay lower than the market would have granted him and donated considerable sums of money to the school's library system, all the while becoming the winningest college coach in the sport's history. All of this earned him a godlike status in Pennsylvania. They raised statues to him. They named their babies after him. "Joe Pa" became an indestructible symbol of integrity. But when a young assistant came to him and said that he'd seen Sandusky, Paterno's former right-hand man, having sexual intercourse with a boy in the school's shower room, Joe reacted with none of the shock and anger you might expect of a moral paragon. Instead, he merely passed the information on to higher authorities, showing no sense of urgency. Those authorities a vice-president and the athletic director didn't take action on the report. Sandusky continued to use the university's facilities to entrap vulnerable youngsters and sexually abuse them, apparently without a word of protest from Paterno or anyone else. Eventually the scandal became public. Paterno and the university's president lost their jobs and two of their colleagues were indicted. In a final grim footnote, Paterno died of cancer a short time later. But by that time he was a ruined man, his lifetime of achievement rendered hollow. I've never thought that molestation was the chief issue in either the Penn State or Catholic cases. Rather it was that these two august institutions covered up the scandal, in the church's case even transferring predatory priests, enabling them to continue to practice their pedophilia in a new venue. Tell me again: What exactly were they protecting? The reputations of their institutions? What reputations? OtherWords columnist Donald Kaul lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. otherwords.org

In one of those strange coincidences that make life read like a cheap novel, Jerry Sandusky and Monsignor William Lynn were convicted at almost the same moment by two Pennsylvania juries of charges growing out of sex scandals involving the molestation of underage youngsters. Not that the two cases are mirror images of each other. Sandusky is a former football coach at Penn State University. Lynn is a former aide to the late Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua and was secretary of the clergy in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Sandusky was found guilty of molesting young boys dozens of times over the past 20 years. Lynn was found guilty of covering up sexual abuses committed by priests under his supervision. Sandusky in all likelihood will spend the rest of his life in prison. Lynn faces a sentence of three and a half to seven years. But these cases are parallel examples of two grand, exalted institutions fleeing their moral responsibilities in hopes of avoiding an embarrassing scandal. As the institutions covered up the sex abuses in their ranks, the lives of dozens of young innocents were sacrificed with hardly a thought. What is it about the sexual molestation of children that institutions like the Catholic Church and Penn State don't understand? I'll lay it out for them: It is not acceptable to allow adults to sexually molest children. If you find out it's going on, you stop it. There. Does that sound controversial to you? Complex? I suppose by now we should have become accustomed to the Catholic hierarchy's hypocrisy, but enabling pedophile priests to prey on helpless children while cracking down on nuns who err on the side of compassion for the poor is beyond contempt. I applaud the conviction of Msgr. Lynn. It's a long overdue sign that the Church's habit of protecting pedophiles is as bankrupt legally as it is morally. The Penn State case is still hard to

Large donation to spur diversity at Emory Law School

by Nigel Roberts Law school administrators tend to agree that diversity in the classroom is an asset. Students of different backgrounds contribute unique perspectives that enrich classroom discussions. Yet, achieving meaningful diversity, in terms of race and socioeconomic status, continues largely to elude law schools throughout the nation. At Emory University Law School, diversity is a priority, the law schools dean Robert A. Schapiro said in a July 3 statement announcing a significant donation to boost diversity. The contribution of $2.5 million came from law schools alumnus C. Robert Henrikson, a longtime donor. The Henrikson scholarship has been very important to our efforts to build a diverse class of talented students each year, Schapiro said. This new gift will greatly extend the endowments current reach. According to the statement, Henriksons current donation is the largest individual gift in the law schools history. He established an endowed scholarship fund in 2002, which has been an important source of minority student recruitment to the law school. A portion of the donation, $1.5 million, goes to the scholarship fund. The remaining $1 million will be allocated for additional financial aid and serve as a challenge grant for matching gifts that will go to Emory Laws annual fund. We established this scholarship fund at my alma mater so that, in addition to receiving an outstanding education, Emory law students will benefit from an inclusive environment that values diversity and leverages differences, said Henrikson, former CEO of MetLife Inc. and Emory board of trustees member. Currently, about one-third of the law schools students are from ethnic minority groups that are underrepresented in law schools. The minority presence in law schools, particularly Blacks and Mexican-Americans, has declined in recent decades. According to a study reported in The New York Times, the percentage and number of Black and Mexican-American law students declined from 1993 to 2008, even though law schools added about 3,000 new seats for first-year students. During that 15-year period, the number of Black and Mexican-American law school applicants remained relatively steady, but 61 percent of Black applicants and 46 percent of MexicanAmerican applicants were denied acceptance to all of the law schools to which they applied, compared to 34 percent of White applicants. The Columbia Law School professor who conducted the study underscored that enrollment has declined despite both minority groups improving their college grade-point averages and their Law School Admission Test scores. But the diversity challenge goes beyond race. The vast majority of law school students, according to a study reported in the American Bar Association Journal, come from relatively elite backgrounds particularly at the nations top law schools. According to the study, conducted by a University of California at Los Angeles law professor, more than 75 percent of the students at the nations top 20 law schools come from the top 25 percent of the socioeconomic ladder. And more than half of them come from the top 10 percent. Only 2 percent of the students come from the bottom tier. Furthermore, the racial minorities who gain admittance into law schools tend to represent the most privileged members of their racial group, the study found. Emory Law School states that it has a historic commitment to diversity, which began 50 years ago with its law school dean Ben F. Johnson and trustee chairman Henry L. Bowden. In 1962, they won a successful lawsuit against Georgia to overturn a state Constitution provision that punished private schools that integrated Blacks by revoking their tax-exempt status. Following that legal victory, Johnson spearheaded the schools recruitment of Black students. Today, Emory Law has one of the more ethnically diverse student bodies. Many of these students have been the first members of their families to graduate from college and pursue a legal education, said Joella Hricik, Emory Laws associate dean for development and alumni relations. U.S. News & World Report ranked Emory Law at 53rd in its 2012 Law School Diversity Index. It identifies Asian-Americans, at 11 percent, as the law schools largest minority group.

East Atlanta Kids Club offers academic enrichment and fun

by Daniel Beauregard daniel@dekalbchamp.com Jill Sieder, executive director and founder of the East Atlanta Kids Club, said when it first opened in 1998 the center was about sheer recreationa fun and games environmentbut that has changed over the years. The club, located in the Brownwood Recreation Center in East Atlanta, started as a nonprofit place for local children to go after school or on the weekends. Sieder said children from the East Atlanta community would walk and ride bikes to the center to play and receive homework help. We were kind of in that enrichment categorysome homework help when they needed it but it wasnt really a goal high on our list, Sieder said. Several years ago, Sieder decided to add more academics into the clubs programming and began developing a curriculum centered on reading, language arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects. Weve got these kids here anywhere from three to 12 hours a week and a lot of them are underperforming in really critical areas and we need to change that, so we started doing academic enrichment. We do it at least a couple of days a week when the kids are here and we put a lot of resources into that, Sieder said. Currently, the club is hosting its Sci-Tech, Fun and Fitness Camp, a six-week program that runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sieder said it gives the children a chance to apply what theyve been learning in school in fun and unique ways. Throughout the six weeks children will learn about computer science, aeronautics, rocketry and robotics, as well as playing sports and eating healthy. Its free for most of the kidsthere are a few who are payingbut I think the vast majority were providing this for free, which is how our after school program works, that meets four days a weekthree afternoons and Saturday, Sieder said. Sieder said for the computer and rocketry segments of the camp the club hired Mind Catalyst, an academic service provider that sends instructors to teach the children. The final two weeks of the camp volunteers from Georgia Tech will be working with the children. Theyre going to be coming in and doing it largely pro-bono but well be spending a lot of money on robotics kits, Sieder said. Much of the resources for the club and the camp, come from donations from local companies and grants. The club has a computer lab, as well as 20 laptops for the children to use, which were donated by Sun Microsystems. Sieder said many of the camp instructors and staff for the afterschool program are volunteers from the community, local colleges and local nonprofit organization Hands on Atlanta. Each volunteer is required to undergo an orientation process and a background check. Well get you tutoring for an hour or two but we also want to get you out there playing kickball because thats where bonding with the kids happensit really enhances what goes on in the classroom. If they think youre a cool guy out there playing kickball then theyre more likely to perform better in the classroom and ask for your help, Sieder said. In addition to the academic activities, students attending the camp and after-school program also learn about living and eating healthy. The club is partnering with the East Lake YMCA, which sends soccer and basketball coaches to work with the children several times a week. Sieder said the YMCA also busses campers to swim in the pool at its facility once a week. Were also working with the folks that run the Brownwood Community garden, Sieder said. Behind the club is a small community garden. Sieder said many of the children who come to the camp and after-school program planted most of the vegetables, which are now ready to harvest. Theres corn, beans, tomatoesnow that its growing the kids can come out here and harvest it and go back in there and cook it, so it really brings it home, Sieder said.

Twelve 24 Boutique features affordable, trendy, one-of-a-kind fashions.

Owners Melanie Williams, left, and Angela Hargro say they have complementary business skills.

The owners choose clothes from designers who cater to larger women.

Twelve 24 Boutique celebrates the plus-size woman

by Kathy Mitchell kathy@dekalbchamp.com Angela Hargro said that the boutique in downtown Decatur that she opened with partner Melanie Williams was born out of frustration as a shopper. It was so hard to find clothes in my size that didnt look like something somebodys grandmother would wear, Hargro said. The name Twelve 24 reflects the range of sizes carried in the boutique on East Ponce de Leon Avenue that owners say was created to meet the needs of curvy women. Women want to look good and feel good in what they wear no matter their size, Williams said. We want to help them to do that. As a curvy woman, I grew increasingly frustrated in my quest to find fashion forward clothing in my size, Hargro said. Shopping in the basement and corners of department stores on three racks of clothing is not a pleasant experience. Women with curves have been neglected long enough. Plus size women deserve to have the same or better shopping experience as women that are a size 2. I love boutiques and I wanted all women to be able to experience the joy of finding a cute outfit in a comfortable and welcoming setting. The business partners both still work at the health care corporation where they met, but said they hope to soon be in the fashion business fulltime. Friends and co-workers, they decided that they shared an entrepreneurial spirit. More than two years ago they launched a successful jewelry business that they have merged with the clothing store. Hargro said Williams fashion sense is the perfect complement to her eagerness to meet the needs of what she says is an underserved segment of the population. The large number of women attending the grand opening June 21 suggests that many women share her enthusiasm for fashionable clothes in larger sizes. Williams said that they look for designers who create clothes that would look good on larger women, not just the same design but in a larger size. A number of their designers are local, they say, and are excited that a shop wants to specialize in the type of fashions they design. The owners describe the selections at Twelve 24 Boutique as affordable, trendy, oneof-a-kind clothing from top designers as well as accessories, gifts and more. Our goal is to provide a great selection of clothing and jewelry that curvy women actually want to wear, Hargro said. We want to provide exceptional personal service along with private appointment shopping. We will become the shopping destination for women size 12 - 24. The store is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, but owners say they will open Mondays and Tuesdays by appointment. Hargro said the response from customers has been great. Shoppers tell us they are so excited to find someone who gets it, who understands what curvy women are looking for, she said. The partners say the Decatur business community has been helpful, friendly and welcoming. We chose downtown Decatur because we felt it would be a great location for our target customers, but we have been delighted that the local business community has been so supportive, Williams said.

County holds tax millage to 2011 level

by Andrew Cauthen andrew@dekalbchamp.com DeKalb County will hold the line on its tax millage rate, but commissioners say there is work to be done. For unincorporated areas of the county, the millage rate will stay at 21.21 mills, after a 4-2 vote by the countys Board of Commissioners to approve the CEO Burrell Ellis adjusted budget. Commissioners Larry Johnson and Elaine Boyer voted against the budget. When originally proposed by Ellis, the budget was $559 million, but has been reduced to $556 million. Commissioner Lee May, who said he begrudgingly supports Ellis budget said, Today indicates the reality that our system really is broken. Its difficult to implement some of the real changes. without there being WWIII, May said. May said commissioners have some real difficult things to do to have more control of the budget. We need to look at our form of government, May said. Commissioner Jeff Rader, who said he is concerned about the countys level of reserved funds, said the county government has an overemphasis in maintaining the status quo. The amount of reserves in the original budget was an overstatement, said Richard Stogner, the countys chief operating officer. The original budget anticipated $1 million from a hotelmotel tax increase. That increase did not get the support it needed to pass the states General Assembly. Also in the budget was $1.53 million in revenue from the countys golf course funds. Those projections were later lowered. Its not like were taking money out of the reserve, Stogner said. The money was never actually in the reserve in the first place. In April, Ellis instructed county department heads under his oversight to make plans to cut their budgets 3 percent this year and 5 percent next year. I do not think they will have a substantial impact on our operations this year, Stogner said.

One arrested, one sought in Gresham Park shooting

The DeKalb County Sheriffs Office fugitive squad is searching for a second suspect in a July 2 shooting at Gresham Park where two people were killed. The park is located at 3113 Gresham Road in south DeKalb after some sort of altercation in the parking lot between the deceased men and several others, said Mekka Parish, a spokesperson for the DeKalb County Police Department. One victim died at the scene and the other was transported to a local hospital where he died, Parish said. An arrest warrant has been issued for 20-year-old Kendarius Lamonte Harris of Atlanta, charging him with the murders of Stanley Hill and Kelvin Parks, according to a statement by the Sheriffs Office. Harris is described as 5-feet-11 and weighing approximately 180 pounds, and the Sheriffs Office said he should be considered armed and dangerous. The other suspect, Anthony Demario Lewis, 20, of Atlanta, was arrested July 3 and charged with two counts of murder. A $2,000 reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Harris. Individuals with information on Harris should call (404) 577-TIPS (8477) or visit the Crime Stoppers website at www.crimestoppersatlanta. org.

Scottdale centenarian celebrates milestone birthday

by Matt Amato On July 4, 1912, the country celebrated Independence Day by proclaiming the new 48-star flag as the official symbol of the United States. The date was also memorable for a train crash near Corning, N.Y., in which 41 people were killed. Three days later, escape artist Harry Houdini stunned the world by emerging unhindered from New York Citys East River after being bound by shackles and confined in an underwater grave. Since those days, the Russian Revolution, two World Wars, commercial radio, television and the internet have all come to pass. And one Scottdale resident, Mattie Ruth Little, has lived through it all. Little turned 100 years old on July 4, 2012 a milestone marked by more than 100 relatives and friends July 8 at a Lithonia events center. Among her greatest accomplishments was raising 10 children. Everything was fun all the time, just fond memories, said son Harold Little, 71, recalling his upbringing. Asked how his mother managed to run such a crowded household, Grady Little, 69, remembered a strict disciplinarian who ruled with an iron fist when necessary. Thats the reason we are who we are today, he said. Mattie Ruth Little remains visible in the Scottdale community and actively practices her faith a trait shared by her children. Friends and relatives consistently noted her sense of humor when paying tribute at Sundays celebration, with one younger relative joking that she is frequently asked if she can accompany her clubbing. Littles long list of descendants includes eight remaining children, 26 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 10 greatgreat-grandchildren. Many took the opportunity to share anecdotes with attendees, who traveled from as far as New York to join the celebration. Im just proud to have so many children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren, she said. A full-spirited Little was also happy to offer advice, taken from a century of life. Be good, do right, love everybodyand whether they love you or not, love them just the same, she said. If they dont love you, thats their problem. If you do love them, God notices.

StarWatch By Gary Becker - Rise and Shine: Venus, Jupiter Await

When I contemplate rising before dawn, I think of the Simpsons episode entitled, Barts Comet. Bart Simpson discovers a doomsday interloper after pulling a prank on his science teacher, Big Butt Skinner. Barts punishment is to assist Skinners astronomy project, but Barts discovery steals the day. When the radio alarm wakes Bart at 4:00 a.m., the announcer is saying, Top of the hour Time for the morning news, but, of course, there is no news yet because everyones still asleep in their comfy, comfy beds. Good night everybody A confused and very groggy Bart bikes over to his school. I feel Barts pain when the alarm, or my mental alarm, awakens me from a deep sleep for an early morning star watch. Right now, that means rising at 4 a.m. and being quick about an exit into the cool, morning air, no more than 15 minutes later. Upon going outside you may still think that you are in the twilight zone because low in the ENE will be the same two brilliant objects, Venus and Jupiter, which graced the evening sky during the first half of this year. Now, however, the pair is on the morning side of the sun, with Jupiter higher in the sky than Venus. The entire week will produce superb views, but if there was one specific morning to highlight, Id pick Sunday, July 15, because as the heavens brighten, a 13 percent lit, waning crescent moon will be straddling the pair. Jupiter and Venus will be less than seven degrees apart with the moon nearly in between. Because it will be a very thin horned moon, the portion of Luna not in direct sunlight should be resplendent with earthshine, light from a nearly full Earth reflected back to us by the moon. Wide-field binoculars will enhance the earthshine to help fuel the beauty of this conjunction which is also near the bright, orangey star Aldebaran in Taurus the Bull and below the Pleiades. I know Ill be awake for this one. www.astronomy.org

2012
The 2010 census resulted in a great deal of redistricting in Georgia, making 2012 an exceptionally active political year. Voters would do well to confirm their districts before going to the polls as many have changed. In addition to a large number of candidates, there are referendums and party specific questions on the ballots. The Champion contacted candidates by email and asked them to complete a questionnaire. Responses are printed as provided and are unedited except to shorten answers that exceeded the 35-word limit.
