The ICAS presents the first edition of a 68pp full-colour publication featuring articles, visuals, dossiers, highlights and activities in 2011.

Since the beginning of European modernism, the concept of rhythm has had a recurrent significance to art practice. The concept of rhythm is not only a sequence of signs but a sequence of actions. It is a structuring category that controls conscious perceptions and the reception of art as a whole. The group Rhythm Section is about the centrality of rhythm in contemporary art practice now, to explore as a collective a process of exchange about the issue of rhythm. The exchange and the dynamic that arise from research and the gathering of different approaches and media provide new starting points for the practice of art. Through presentations of different types of works in various sectors of the contemporary art scene, Rhythm Section seeks to stimulate an exchange between artists of different nationalities and help to form a network. The current list of artists who are part of the project is characterised by a variety of media and disciplines, including painting, drawing, printmaking, installation, digital, film, video, performance and music. Tropical Lab 6: LAND

Tropical Lab The International Art Camp is into its 6th year running at LASALLE College of the Arts. This intensive and highly engaging fourteen-day event will bring together more than 20 postgraduate students from leading art institutions around the world. Tropical Lab is a creative space for students to research and collaborate to create contemporary art works for the final exhibition curated by Dr. Charles Merewether, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore. The subject of this years Tropical Lab is Land. The subject of land has always been an area of exploration within artistic practices throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The students will be exposed to various concepts and interpretations of land such as an underground tunnel tour, visiting sustainable farms, and even a boat ride to explore Pulau Ubin.

To celebrate the sixth edition of Tropical Lab, a special publication ISSUE will be launched in October 2012. The inaugural issue will feature the following: Interview with filmmaker Werner Herzog on his 3D documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2011) about the recent discovery of the Chauvet Cave in southern France which contained paleolithic paintings Article by theatre practitioner Rachael Swain on the indigenous Australian peoples concept of land, as articulated through theatre performance Article on the work of London-based Iraqi artist Jananne Al-Ani about photographic mapping of land in the Arab world Photo essay by Andreas Schlegel and Vladimir Todorovic, derived from their travel to Mongolia Dossiers by contemporary artists, which include Choy Ka Fai, Debbie Ding and Charles Lim

Tropical Lab 5: Masak-masak (2011) at ICA Gallery 2

Tropical Lab has grown to include multidisciplinary artists working with various mediums, such as film, photography, painting, installation and performance art. The student-artists will attend a series of workshops and seminars guided by leading artists and opinion leaders to act as a catalyst between the students and the local arts and heritage community in Singapore.

The Winston Oh Travel Award 2012

Initiated by Dr Winston Oh to help young artists travel abroad to expand their artistic experience, The Winston Oh Travel Award is an annual grant given to selected students from the Faculty of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts. This overseas experience, now in its 13th year, aims to support students in their formative years of art education by offering the opportunity to immerse themselves in a different environment and culture. To test their observational skills as they learn to assimilate new sensations and experiences, the students headed to various parts of Asia this year. render visible render duration sonorous To attempt to render visible what is unseen and to make audible, what cannot be heard through different plains of intensities and vibrations. Sonorous Duration continues in 2012 after the successful inauguration of this festival last September. This year will again feature installation and experimental music performances co-presented by the ICAS and the School of Contemporary Music, LASALLE College of the Arts. The festival features installations by Robbie Avenaim (Aus), Darren Moore and Brian OReilly (Sing) and a collaboration between Serbian/ Singapore artist Igor Delic and Timothy ODwyer (Sing) in addition to performances by local and international guests during the opening night of the festival. The festival seeks to articulate a common ground shared by contemporary sonic and visual art practice. The installation artists featured will present works using objects, video and physical space in combination with sound to re-position the discourse in interesting ways, while visiting and local performers will feature different types of interactive controllers using customized computer software.

A Royal Academy exhibition in association with Fortune Cookie Projects and the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore The Royal Academy of Arts presents Encounter: The Royal Academy in Asia, an exhibition featuring 100 works of art in a wide variety of media by 25 Royal Academicians and 25 prominent artists from across Asia. Encounter enters into the spirit of engagement with the international art community and the general public by inviting these artists to exhibit side-by-side. The aim of Encounter is to provide a platform for dialogue amongst practitioners working in a wide range of media painting, sculpture, assemblage, photography and video. Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore

The Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICAS) is the curatorial division of LASALLE College of the Arts. It runs seven galleries, comprising some 1,500 square meters of gallery spaces dedicated to exploring new and experimental art across the Fine Arts, Design, Media Practices and Performing Arts. Its programme focuses on showcasing international, Asian, Southeast Asian and local contemporary arts. Its public programme includes regular publications, seminars and symposiums, visiting artists talks and events of contemporary performance, installation, design and music/sound practices. The ICAS is committed to providing a cultural and educational tool for students and the Singaporean audience to advance their knowledge and appreciation of the contemporary local, regional and international arts, that is not otherwise available in Singapore today.
