All of Us - #556

Finding Comfort I heard a report on the radio this past week that mentioned what people were doing in an attempt to try to beat the summer heat of 2012. Many flocked to the Chicago lakefront to cool off in the water. Others were camped out in shady spots to get relief from the sun, praying for a possible gentle breeze that would thin out the thick humid air. Others decided to hang out at cool places like Starbucks or the movie theater for a couple of hours. An iced coffee to wash down a bag of buttered popcorn might work. I was even surprised to hear a report from an ice cream vendor who actually testified that his sales were slightly down as the temperatures hovered in the high 90s. With all those scorching summer days, you would think his supplies would be quickly emptied out by the high demand for something that would taste great and bring relief, no matter what flavor. But like the snow storm that hit Chicago in February of 2011, this summer, lots of folks just bunkered down inside in order not to have to deal with the weather outside. I thank you for your patience this summer as we continue to use the gym for our main place of worship until we can reenter the church. The extreme weather has made it difficult to keep the gym totally cooled down on Sundays, especially with the added body heat that comes with our more crowded Masses. Thank you for sticking in there and not giving up the faith. May our patience not melt away. While I was on vacation last Sunday, I went to Mass at a church in the inner city that had no air conditioning. All that they had were oscillating fans that were mounted on the side walls between the Stations of the Cross. It felt like I was going to Mass in the middle of an airplane hanger and the engines were all fired up. I could barely hear the priest who was preaching. I looked over to the pew next to me and I saw two little kids lying down in the pew next to their parents. They looked as if they had melted like a wedding candle left on the front seat of a car on a really hot day. Hopefully relief will come soon. Let us pray for rain and for the farmers and their families who have been affected by the long summer drought. We pray for all who have to work outside, like construction workers, mail carriers, roofers and emergency personnel.

At the 5:30 PM Mass this Saturday, we proudly bless and commission 24 teens that are headed off to St. Louis, Missouri on Sunday morning to participate in the Catholic HeartWork program. They will spend a whole week working together with other adults and teens from across the country building affordable housing for the poor. I admire the willingness of our teens to sacrifice part of their summer vacation and offer it up to the Lord in service to the poor. There are a hundred other things they could be doing with their friends with all the comforts of home at their fingertips. St. Louis is a sticky place in the summer. All you have to do is just stand outside and you automatically begin to sweat. We pray for a safe journey and a rewarding experience for our faith-filled young men and women. May God bless them in all that they do and the people they will meet along the way. One Great Party Thank you to all who made our Parish Block Party on Friday night a wonderful event for our parish. It was great to have so many parishioners come together and share some food, music, fellowship and fun. A special word of thanks goes out to Liz Brohan, who chaired the event. She, and her committee, have been working on the Block Party since January. I thank them for taking care of all the details that are involved with such a huge event. We are truly blessed by their talents and skills. Marching On Summer is quickly marching on. Most of the families I have talked to tell me that they have been busy with summer activities. There are things to do and places to be. Life has not slowed down, which is what they were hoping for when the school year ended in June. The words of Jesus in todays gospel offer us a good invitation. Come away and rest. Hopefully these days allow our hearts to rest with the Lord, perhaps in quiet prayer or simple reflection. It will be time well spent.

SPRED is an unique program of religious education/faith development for children, teenagers, young adults and adults with mental retardation, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, intellectual and developmental challenges and those with learning problems. It is not a typical religious education program but one of growing in faith within a small group. It is an opportunity for people to come together to become more aware of Gods presence in our daily lives. The sessions conclude with the sharing of food and drink around a beautifully set table. Come discover SPRED. There will be a SPRED Informational Gathering on Tuesday, August 7th at 6:30 PM in our rectory. Parents are most welcomed no matter the age or abilities of your child, teen, young adult or adult with special needs. Our parish can welcome three more teens and St. Patrick parish has openings for children. We are also looking for interested men and women who would like to volunteer. Volunteers need no experience with special needs people, just a willingness to become someones friend and to grow in faith together. Training is provided.

Faithful Citizenship
Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching The Churchs social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through the tradition of papal, conciliar and Episcopal documents. The seven themes as outlined by the bishops are:
i Life and Dignity of the Human Person i Call to Family, Community and Participation i Rights and Responsibilities i Option for the Poor and Vulnerable i The Dignity of Work and the Right of Workers i Solidarity i Care for Gods Creation

Congratulations to

Colleen Ernst & Brian Kowieski Married Saturday, July 14th, 2012

Life and Dignity of the Human Person This is one of the social issues that has been discussed widely most recently. The Church teaches that human life is sacred and that the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. While this issue is generally talked about in terms of abortion, euthanasia, cloning and fertility concerns it also includes war, terrorist attacks, human trafficking and the death penalty. The intentional targeting of civilians in war or terrorist attacks is always wrong. Catholic teaching also calls us to work to avoid war. Nations must protect the right to life by finding increasingly effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them by peaceful means. We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person. ~all references from USCCB

Loving God, We thank You for the generous blessings You have bestowed upon Our Faith. May Your Spirit give us the vision to look into our hearts for inspiration, and in your honor, respond with our sacrifice, Our Gift. Help us as we care for this sacred and holy place, Our Home, where we come to offer you glory, praise and honor. Amen.

Tri-Parish Anointing of the Sick

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish will celebrate the Anointing of the Sick at the 11 AM Mass.

Alyssa Szymanski
Alyssa Szymanski graduated from Lemont High School in May. She was very active participating in Poms for four years; she was the squad leader her senior year. Alyssa was on the student council for four years and was an officer her junior year. She was in the Foreign Language club and a featured dancer in the spring musical. She was also a participant of the Future Christian Athletes, community service for everyone. Alyssa was a part of the Lemont Youth Ministry program and attended many summer mission trips. She is a Religious Education Aide at St. Alphonsus as well as a Vacation Bible School aide. Alyssa will be attending Augusta College majoring in Biology and Pre-Veterinary Medicine. Good Luck, to you Alyssa, and thank you for all your service to your parish. May you continue to be a shinning star!

We extend an invitation to those in our Tri-Parish Family who feel that the Celebration of Anointing will provide help for them in sickness and aging of their bodies. In the past, the Anointing was done near the time of death. Theology today understands Anointing as the Sacrament of the sick rather that at the time of approaching death. The Anointing of the Sick is the prayer of Christ and His Church for the physical and spiritual health of the sick person. Who may be Anointed?

A sick person may be Anointed before he/she undergoes surgery, whether or not the surgery is serious. Persons with chronic illness. Older persons, even if they are not suffering from dangerous illness. Mentally disabled persons and chemically dependent persons. A sick child may be Anointed in order to be comforted and uplifted by the Sacrament.

HOPE: An Immigrant Story

I was a stranger and you welcomed me.. Matthew 25:35 On June 15, 2012 it was announced that deportations will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for young people who entered the U.S. before the age of 15, are not above 30, and have not committed any serious crimes. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops supports this action. Amanda, a Dreamer who was brought to Chicago at eight and was on the honor roll at her school, said I have been praying for some sort of relief for very long. I might be able to go to college and attain a degree now! ~ Amanda-Chicago, IL How could we accompany young people like Amanda and others like her? Participate in the Light a Candle for the DREAM Act by sending an e-postcard to your Senator or Rep at www.justiceforimmigrants.org.

Following the Mass there will be a luncheon in the back of the gym. If you wish to participate in the Anointing of the Sick, Saturday, August 4th, please detach and return the form below to the rectory or the collection basket no later than Friday, July 27th. It is very important for us to have an accurate count for the meal. If you have any questions, please call (630) 257-2776.

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week July 22-28th Faithfully Yours Celebrate and reverence God's vision of human sexuality.
What is Natural Family Planning (NFP)? A natural way to postpone or achieve pregnancy, proven to be 99% effective, based on an awareness of a womans fertility. What are the advantages to NFP? It is 100% natural, 100% safe and has no health risks. Couples report that NFP has a positive effect on their marriages. How can I learn NFP? Professionally certified couples teach NFP in a series of three classes spaced a month apart. What is the Couple to Couple League (CCL)?

An international, interfaith, non-profit organization dedicated to teaching Natural Family Planning (NFP) to married and engaged couples. What Couples Are Saying: Its been nearly two years now since my wife and I took our NFP class with you. I cant tell you enough about the powerful ways that NFP has worked in our marriage. We have definitely experienced a great sense of freedom since leaving the pill behind. Chicago We both really appreciate knowing what my body is up to. We also appreciate the tone and diction of The Art of Natural Family Planning. WV we successfully used NFP to achieve our first pregnancy and now have a beautiful 9 month old girl, Annie Rose. As a high school science teacher I was amazed at how much I didnt know about my own body, and was grateful to find an alternative lifestyle that was rooted in my Catholic beliefs.
