All of Us - #557
Fr. Larry "Father, you're a lucky man." "Really?" I said in return. In the back of my mind I wondered why the guy would even say such a thing to me early in the morning. His comment caught me by surprise. "Yes, Father," the electrician said. "Before you go to bed tonight, if I were you, I would offer up a big prayer of thanksgiving to the Guy Upstairs for the several miracles He has sent you." "What do you mean?" I asked. He looked me straight in the eye and said, "This church should have burned down to the ground a long time ago. Do you know how bad the electrical wiring is in this building? There is a ton of old cloth wiring that goes back to when it was built in 1929. I havent seen something this bad in years. Then to prove his point, the electrician picked up a bundle of old wire off the floor that he had pulled from within the walls. He said, "Look at this, Father. See how the insulation crumbles in my hand, leaving the metal completely exposed?" Now I didnt take Electricity 101 in the seminary, but my gut feeling was telling me that what the electrician was showing me was not good. Then the electrician pushed it one step further. He raised the wad of wire close to my face and said, "Father, youve got to smell this. Take a good whiff." The bundle of wire smelled like an old cigarette ashtray. The kind you would find years ago in a smoky bingo parlor, piled high with burned-out butts from nervous gamblers. "Im telling you, Father, youre lucky this place is still standing. It could have easily gone up in flames. You okay, Father?" the electrician asked. "You look a little pale. "I'll be fine." I reassured him. After that news, I headed back to the rectory needing another cup of coffee. It would be a strong one, straight black.

As part of this phase of renovation of the church, and because of life and safety concerns and code requirements, the Archdiocese is requiring that we replace all the old cloth wiring in church at this time. Imagine painting our church and then watching it burn down. It already happened in 1928. This is the part of history that we don't want to repeat. We were fortunate to be able to catch it when we did. Thank you, Jesus. Also, with a second floor of scaffolding erected close to the ceiling, this has given us a really good opportunity to closely examine the eight glass chandeliers. All of them are in need of some repair because of cracks, missing pieces and broken panels. The pictures show their condition. This certainly is not something you can see when you are sitting in the pew below them some 30 feet away. Now is the time to fix the chandeliers, especially because we are so close to them with the scaffolding that we are using to paint the ceiling. We have great access to work on them. Moreover, the chandeliers are valuable works of art that need to be restored and preserved. It is estimated that they date back to the early 1900's. As part of the restoration, new light bulbs will be installed that have a life expectancy of 50 years. (Many of us won't be around to change them when they burn out.) Sometimes parishioners will take it upon themselves to donate to a particular item of a building restoration as part of their generosity and support of the parish. For example, in our church the stained glass windows and murals each have a name of a benefactor who donated them in memory of their family. If your family would like to make a specific donation to help with the added cost of restoring our chandeliers, please feel free to contact me. Notice Something Different? The gym walls have been painted over the summer which has given it a nice fresh look. We are grateful for our parishioners, Geno and Laura Sciacca, of the

McLaughlin Painting Company, for tackling the project and working around our summer Mass schedule. Slowly, but Surely Many parishioners have asked how my dad is doing. Well, better each day. The pain in his back, from his fall in June, has greatly dissipated, which is a good sign that his body is healing. Through physical therapy, he is slowly getting stronger each day and becoming more mobile. It is a slow process. My dad has taught me how patience is truly a virtue. My brother Brian and I are hoping to have him return home soon. Brian lives with him on the north side of Chicago. The care that my dad has been given each day at the rehabilitation center at the Mother Teresa Home of Franciscan Village has been very good. I am sure there will be a part of him that wishes he could still stay there. Besides that, he has met some very nice people in a short time. Thank you to all who have sent their best wishes and prayers to my dad. It brightens his day and lifts his spirits. Thank you, as well, to the parishioners who have popped in on him to see how he is doing and share the good news about our parish. A Busy Summer Since the beginning of June, we have had nine funerals so far. We are blessed by the generosity of St. Alphonsus and St. Patrick parishes who have gone out of their way to accommodate us during the summer when our church has been closed for construction. Thank you, Fr. Brian Ardagh and Fr. Kurt Boras, and their staff in helping us out. The old saying is true. If you want to make God laugh, just tell Him what your plans are. Please remember in your prayers our recently departed: Sophie Grygus Tadeusz Budz Catherine Brohan Rodrigo Recio Deborah Buffa Patricia Heeg Marv Gonsiorowski Casimir Kluga Marguerite Bloom

Dear Parents, It is hard to believe, but the very warm summer we have been experiencing is going by quickly, and we will soon be opening the school doors for another very busy year! We will have some new faces joining our staff, and I would like to introduce them to you at this time. I am very thankful for the parents, teachers, and other staff members who helped me with the interviewing process. Miss Kathryn Wagner will be teaching kindergarten. She is a recent graduate of St. Marys College in Notre Dame, Indiana. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a concentration in Reading Intervention and Exceptional Needs. Miss Kara Sedlack will be teaching our new Preschool. She has a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education with an endorsement in Special Education. Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching: Social Teaching and Formation of Conscience: Call to Family, Community and Participation-The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our societyin economics and politics, in law and policydirectly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and the well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Rights and Responsibilities-The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilitiesto one another, to our families, and to the larger society. ~all references from USCCB

Loving God, We thank You for the generous blessings You have bestowed upon Our Faith. May Your Spirit give us the vision to look into our hearts for inspiration, and in your honor, respond with our sacrifice, Our Gift. Help us as we care for this sacred and holy place, Our Home, where we come to offer you glory, praise and honor. Amen.

Tri-Parish Anointing of the Sick

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish will celebrate the Anointing of the Sick at the 11 AM Mass.

Angelica Carmen
Angelica graduated from Lemont High School in May. She was a member of National Honor Society and National English Honor Society. She was also active in Model United Nations, Student Council, Art Club and Foreign Language Club. Angelica has been very active in Youth Ministry all four years as well as Jr. High youth ministry in 6, 7th & 8th grades. She has attended almost every meeting and has been a great support to the youth minister over the years. She has served at PADS, Feed My Starving Children program and participated in the teen productions Song Of The Stable and Living Stations Of The Cross. Angelica also went on three Catholic HeartWork Camp mission trips, to St Louis, Chicago and Memphis. She went to Washington D.C. and marched in The March For Life. Angelica will be attending Loyola University in the fall majoring in nursing. Good Luck to you, Angelica, as you continue your life journey down many happy roads!

We extend an invitation to those in our Tri-Parish Family who feel that the Celebration of Anointing will provide help for them in sickness and aging of their bodies. In the past, the Anointing was done near the time of death. Theology today understands Anointing as the Sacrament of the sick rather that at the time of approaching death. The Anointing of the Sick is the prayer of Christ and His Church for the physical and spiritual health of the sick person. Who may be Anointed?

A sick person may be Anointed before he/she undergoes surgery, whether or not the surgery is serious. Persons with chronic illness. Older persons, even if they are not suffering from dangerous illness. Mentally disabled persons and chemically dependent persons. A sick child may be Anointed in order to be comforted and uplifted by the Sacrament.

College Connection
Lemont Tri-Parish Youth Ministry has introduced a new program called the College Connection. The program is designed to keep a connection to students leaving home and their parishes through mail that will be sent to them while they are away at school. Students will receive bulletins, care packages, prayers and other surprises sent to their mailboxes while away at school. To be a part of the program email Mike Lundberg (Tri-Parish youth minister) at lemontyouthm@sbcglobal.net with the name and school address of the student that would like to participate.

Following the Mass there will be a luncheon in the back of the gym. If you wish to participate in the Anointing of the Sick, Saturday, August 4th, please detach and return the form below to the rectory or the collection basket no later than Friday, July 27th. It is very important for us to have an accurate count for the meal. If you have any questions, please call (630) 257-2776.

July 29, 2012

Summer is waning and it is that time of year to consider becoming involved not just in activities required of you or your children but stretching your own faith. There are many ways to do this such as religious education, RCIA, Ministry of Care and now SPRED. The SPRED ministry not only gives you an opportunity to grow in your own faith but also to reach out to those more vulnerable and guide them as a friend so all grow in faith. It is a two track system: for every session with our friends, there is a session the week prior for those who volunteer. Getting involved so your faith matters is key. Celebrating that faith at a Sunday Mass becomes even more powerful. We need just a few more volunteers, men and women. We also want to know the parents of people with developmental and intellectual challenges, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning problems no matter their age of abilities who live in our parish. These parents and interested people are invited to a SPRED Informational Gathering on Tuesday, August 7th at 6:30 PM in our rectory. Training is offered to all who volunteer to make one comfortable in this unique program. The decision is yours. One does not need experience to become involved. SPRED is all about developing friendships. We especially welcome parents of children and teens because we have openings in the SPRED program for them.

marry Catholics want to share not only their lives and values, but also their faith.
i Young parents who are expecting

their first born or have children starting school often find that this is the time to join a faith community that will help them find God in their lives and establish moral values in their family.
i People who are baptized either in the Catholic faith or

another Christian religion, but were not brought up or educated in the religion. As the years go by, they may seek to return to their Christian roots.
i People from all backgrounds that are seeking God in

their liveslooking for answers to life and death questions. The Catholic Church offers great traditions of Scripture, the worship of God in vibrant liturgies, intellectual studies of theology, joyful celebrations through the Sacraments, care for the sick and the dying and love and hope for the poor of the world. How Does a Person Become Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process by which the Catholic Church welcomes new members into its communal life. The RCIA is a living experience of the Church, and not just a series of classes which teach knowledge about the Church. Although there is instruction in the facts of the faith, instruction is but one part of a larger experience of knowing and sharing with other members of the Church. Who is RCIA for?

O God, in Whom we live and move, and have our being, grant us rain, in due abundance, that, being sufficiently helped with temporal, we may the more confidently seek after eternal gifts. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen. Prayer Source: Novena in Honor of St. Isidore: Patron Saint of Farmers

It is for non-Christian men and women; for Christians that are not Catholic; for Catholics who are baptized, but have no religious training. How Can I Join? The Catholic churches in Lemont work together in this experience. Contact Fr. Larry or Doreen at (630) 2572414 and watch the bulletins for further details. New Group Now Forming for Fall
