REPORT ON SOIL INVESTIGATION CONDUCTED AT SITE FOR PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL BUILDING AT BYKAMPADY, MANGALORE.

1.0

INTRODUCTION:

M/s N V P Foods, Bykampady, Mangalore proposes to construct a warehouse at their site at Bykampady Industrial Area. In order to evaluate bearing capacity of the site, soil investigation was conducted in April 2012. This is a report giving the observations made at the site, analysis and recommendations.

2.0

SITE RECONNAISSANCE:

The proposed site was adjacent to ODC road in Bykampady Industrial Area. The site was originally a water logged area which was filled up recently.

3.0

OBJECT AND SCOPE:

The investigation was carried out to obtain: a) b) c) d) Subsoil stratification Physical and Engineering properties of soil layers Level of subsoil water Type of foundation suitable for the structure.

With these objectives, the scope of the work comprised of a) b) c) d) Sinking five exploratory boreholes. Conducting Standard Penetration Test at regular depth in boreholes. Observing the level of subsoil water. Preparing a detailed report with observations made at site, borelog, test results and recommendations.

4.0

DETAILS OF INVESTIGATION:

In order to know the soil profile and engineering properties of soil at different depths, five exploratory boreholes were sunk at locations shown in Fig.1 .The boreholes were sunken upto hard strata using Calyx drilling rig. Diamond bit was used to drill in hard strata. Standard Penetration Test was conducted inside the boreholes at every 1.5m interval.

5.0

RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION:

Soil formation at the site can be generalized as follows: 1. Top filled up layer 1 to 2m thick 2. Very weak clay 6 to 11m thick with N values between 0 and 3 3. Reddish gray silty sand with gravel 2m thick with N value 7 4. Whitish green completely weathered rock 3 to 6m thick N values 4 to 12 5. Yellowish moderately to highly weathered rock at 11.5 to 16m depth, N > 100. 6. Hard rock met at 20m at BH1 location. Depth of hard strata (N > 100): BH No 1 2 3 4 5 Depth (m) 16.0 11.5 13.0 14.5 16.0

6.0 6.1

ANALYSIS OF RESULTS Bearing capacity for shallow foundations

Soil strata at the site comprised of highly compressible soft clay at the top. This layer was 6 to 11m thick. Due to the presence of this weak soil, shallow foundations are not suitable for heavily loaded structures as this will induce large settlement. For lightly loaded structures, isolated foundations can be adopted after improving ground by providing well compacted boulder packed with sand 0.5m thick below footings. Bearing capacity 5T/m2 shall be adopted for footings less than 2m wide laid at 2m depth on improved ground.

6.2

Pile foundations

Pile foundations shall be adopted for heavily loaded structures. As per IS:2911 Part-I Sec 2-2010, pile load capacity: Load capacity Q = cu1 Nc B2 4 Fs + cu2 BL 4 Fs

Where cu1 = shear strength of rock below base of pile Nc = bearing capacity factor, taken as 9 B = Pile diameter Fs = Factor of safety = 3 = 0.9 cu2 = average shear strength of rock in socketed length of pile. L = socket length of pile. For highly weathered rock, as per code, cu1 = cu2 = 600 kN/m2 Capacity of 500mm dia pile socketed 4 times its dia (2m) in weathered rock: 0.52 Q = 600x9x 4x3 + 0.9x600x x0.5x2 4x3

= 918.9 kN say 90 Ton

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

1.0 2.0 3.0 4.0

The site was originally a water logged area which was recently filled up. Soft compressible clay was present in the top. Thickness of soft clay varied from 6 to 11m at the various borehole locations. Due to the presence of soft compressible clay, shallow foundations are not suitable for heavily loaded structures. For lightly loaded structures, shallow foundations with width less than 2m can be adopted. These footings shall be laid after improving ground by laying packed boulder sand bed 0.5m thick. Ground improvement shall be done atleast 0.5m outside the edges of footings.

5.0 6.0

Bearing capacity recommended for shallow foundations laid at 2m depth and resting on improved ground is 5 T/m2 Pile foundation shall be adopted for heavily loaded structures. Load carrying capacity of piles: Pile dia Pile capacity (Ton) 450 70 500 90 600 120

The piles shall be socketed at least 4 times its diameter in hard strata (N > 100) or resting on hard rock.
