The Mt. Laurel Sun
yan Munn wants to be a herpetologist when
he grows up. In the meantime, hes content
living the peaceful life of a fisherman at Lau-
rel Acres Park in Mt. Laurel.
The 9-year-old once caught 42 fish in one hour at
the park, as counted by his grandma.
Late in the morning on Tuesday, July 17, Ryan
was having plenty of luck at the lake, snatching up
sunnies and peering into the waters with enhanced
vision through his polarized sunglasses.

Mt. Laurel Business Network is growing

With no main street to stroll for
shopping like neighboring
Moorestown or nearby Haddon-
field, Mt. Laurels small business-
es operate a little differently.
To bring them together, Doug
Bohrer, a resident for more than
20 years, founded the Mt. Laurel
Business Network at the start of
2011.
In recent days, membership
has exploded to approximately 60
paid members from the town-
ships small businesses.
From the deli to bagel shop to
hairdresser or real estate agent,
the network strives to represent
its members.
Our network was founded on
living in Mt. Laurel, Bohrer
said. We try really to refer busi-
ness to each other.
As the community is spread
out, people connect on such
places as the back-to-school
events and on the soccer and
baseball fields, he explained.
We dont have a Haddonfield
or a Moorestown or a Palmyra or
a Haddon Heights, he said. We
dont have anything like that.
We dont have a place where
people tend to meet.
At the networks meetings,
which happen every 70 to 80 days,
the atmosphere is informal and
light.
Its more of a hand-shaking
conversation, he said. Its very,
very, very informal.
For 45 minutes to an hour, the
members chat about their busi-
nesses and share stories.
Later, a guest speaker takes the
floor.
In the past, Congressman Jon
Runyan and Mt. Laurel Mayor
Jim Keenan have addressed the
group.
Topics have included how to
save money on energy and how
businesses can protect them-
selves against certain disasters.
We try to bring something to
the table every single meeting,
Bohrer explained, in hopes to af-
fect at least one person in atten-
dance.
The network currently charges
$50 per year to join.
Theres a lot of small busi-
nesses, he said, with many in
clusters. Its just getting the
word out.
Ramblewood Country Club has
provided facilities for the meet-
ings and the group tries to give
back to the community by donat-
ing to local charities.
So far, the network has hosted
four shredding events of which
the senior citizens of the town-
ship eagerly await, said Bohrer.
More than 10 tons of personal
documents have already been
shredded through those events,
he added. The next is scheduled
for Sunday, Oct. 21 at the country
club.

after an exceptional catch.

hind her son, Susanne Munn
could not believe how much infor-
mation he was able to spew in a
short period about the lives of
fish.
Carp. Bass. Rainbow trout. Cat-
fish. Eel. Sunnies.
They all live in the lake, Ryan
said.
Your brain is such a sponge,
Susanne added.
Some of the fish ate the pieces
of hot dog bait and swam off
without being reeled in.
Theyre like little magicians,
Ryan exclaimed.
In May, he caught a 16-inch
bass in the lake, a rare feat.
On average, Ryan can catch be-
tween 10 and 13 fish during a day
trip.
He practices the catch and re-
lease policy.
Ryan gave some words of ad-
vice to those looking to fish in the
lake.
You need an extra small hook
for it because their mouths are so
small, he recommended.

Township Summer Concert Se-
ries. This concert is free and open

host shredding event
The Mt. Laurel Business Net-
work, along with Polar Shredding
and Ramblewood Country Club,
held their fourth community
personal document-shredding
event, which was a huge success.
Residents from Holiday Village
East and West, Birchfield, Ram-
blewood Apartments and many
other locals showed up. The event
was held on Sunday, July 15 from
10 a.m. to noon and over 2.5 tons
of paper was disposed of bring-
ing the total to over 11 tons of per-
sonal documents was shredded
over the last year.

year is almost upon us. In a few
short weeks, schools open.
But what will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about the
new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
If your school district switched its
annual election to November, well ask
if there will be any noticeable impact
on the schools.
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2012-13 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?) Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your

Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.

The following items were taken from re-
ports on file with the Mt. Laurel Police De-
partment:
A resident of the 200 block of Burnam-
wood Drive reported that sometime be-
tween 7 p.m. on July 13 and 8 a.m. on July
14 someone entered his vehicle and stole an
iPod and a credit card. The credit card was
later fraudulently used at an unknown lo-
cation.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 20-year-old
man of the 200 block of West Branch Av-
enue, Pine Hill on July 15 at 12:44 a.m. He
was stopped on Sternlight Drive and ar-
rested for hindering his own apprehension
after he provided a false identity to offi-
cers. He was released pending a court hear-
ing.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 23-year-old
man of the 400 block of Liberty Lane, Marl-
ton on July 15 at 12:05 a.m. He was arrested
and charged with possession of a con-
trolled dangerous substance and drug
paraphernalia after he was found sleeping
in a vehicle on Mountainview Road. He
was released pending a court hearing.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 20-year-old
man of the first block of Hilton Avenue,
Maplewood on July 15 at 12:30 a.m. He pro-
vided a false identity to officers after being
stopped on Route 73. He was charged with
hindering his own apprehension and re-
leased pending a court hearing.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 32-year-old
man of the 800 block of Henri Court,
Burlington on July 15 at 2:50 a.m. He was
arrested for driving while intoxicated after
being stopped on Mt. Laurel Road for a
motor vehicle violation. He was released
pending a court hearing.
An official from the Mt. Laurel Fire De-
partment reported that between 6 p.m. on
July 14 and 6 a.m. on July 15, someone
spray painted graffiti on a shed belonging
to the Birchfield Firehouse on Elbo Lane.
Damage is estimated at $250.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 27-year-old
woman of the 1900 block of Church Lane,
Philadelphia and a 28-year-old man of the
1300 block of Sheridan Street, Camden, on
July 16 at 1:10 a.m. They were arrested dur-
ing an investigation into a noise complaint
at the Staybridge Suites hotel on Church
Road. The woman was charged with ob-
struction after she attempted to flee from
an officer who was arresting her on an out-
standing warrant. The man was charged
with hindering his own apprehension after
he provided officers with a false identity to
avoid arrest on a warrant. Both posted bail

The board also recognized a
plethora of members and the
coaches of Harrington Middle
Schools championship track and
field team. According to officials,
the team won the South Jersey
Middle School League Champi-
onship as well as the Moorestown
Relay Championship.
Mt. Laurel was recently desig-
nated as a high performing dis-
trict for 2011-2012, coming in
above the 80 percentile in all five
domains examined over the past
several months, said Rath, in ref-
erence to the Quality Single Ac-
countability Continuum (QSAC.)
We are up there, she said.

The schools are beginning to
look into a new breakfast pro-
gram, said Robert Wachter Jr., as-
sistant superintendent for busi-
ness and board secretary. More
updates will be coming in August
and September.
Twenty-one new certified staff
members were appointed to their
roles at the meeting, plus one un-
certified play aide.
Dr. Sheila Miller, curriculum
supervisor, explained new addi-
tions to curriculum through a
presentation in areas of technolo-
gy, social studies and challenged-
based learning.
The updates, which range to
make impacts on all district
schools, will update the curricu-
lum to meet Common Core Stan-
dards.

commitments have been secured
by Lenape Regional High School
District, the area fire company,
Mayor Keenan and the Municipal
Utilities Authority.
Its a great historic place, he
said of the Alice Paul Institute.
The network has grown from a
handful of people to its current
state through word of mouth.
We have a lot of people com-
ing that heard about it through a
friend, he said. Its going to be a
great group going forward.
Small businesses, he said,
are the backbones of communi-
ties.
Theres other fragmented
groups within South Jersey, he
explained. Theres nothing that
basically says, We are Mt. Lau-
rel.

be changing.

The 21st annual Mt. Laurel
Meeting Peach Festival will take
place on Saturday, Aug. 4 from
4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., rain or
shine. The outdoor festival fea-
tures homemade cakes and pies
topped with fresh, locally grown
peaches and homemade ice
cream churned on premises with
an old-fashioned ice cream ma-
chine. Guests will also be treated
to balloon animals and tricks by
Pretzels the Clown and a classic
car review. Volunteers will offer
informal tours of the historic
building to interested visitors.
The Mt. Laurel Meetinghouse
is located on the corner of
Moorestown-Mt. Laurel Road and
Hainesport-Mt. Laurel Road at
the historic center of Mt. Laurel.
Built in 1760, it is one of the old-
est Quaker structures in the
Delaware Valley. The hand-hewn
sandstone structure is listed on
the National Register of Historic
Places. The Meetinghouse served
as a temporary hospital for
British and American soldiers
wounded in local skirmishes in
1778 during the Revolutionary
War. In 2010 the Meetinghouse
celebrated 250 years of continu-
ous use by local residents.
Tickets to the Peach Festival
are $5 for adults, $3 for children,
free for children under 4.
Proceeds from the annual
Peach Festival support the ongo-
ing restoration and upkeep of the
Meetinghouse. Join us on Aug. 4
for a step back in time and
a chance to enjoy fun and deli-
cious food with friends and neigh-
bors.

An employee from Best Buy on
Nixon Drive reported that a per-
son opened a line of credit and
then attempted to use the credit to
purchase $4,000 worth of elec-
tronics. Employees became suspi-
cious about the persons identity
and questioned him further. The
man then fled the store leaving
the electronics behind. He is de-
scribed as having a light brown
completion, thin build, 40 to 50
years of age, with a small patch of
grey hair beneath his lower lip. If

Between July 14 and July 16,
two vehicles in the Birchfield de-
velopment and a building belong-
ing to the Mt. Laurel Municipal
Utilities Authority on Elbo Lane
were damaged by graffiti. Some-
one spray painted the phrase
Everybody wants to be a
snowflake and the initials
SPQR and ALDO on the vehi-
cles and the building. There have
been several similar incidents in
the past few months in this area.

cerning this crime should contact
the Mt. Laurel Police Detective
Bureau at (856) 234-1414 ext. 1526.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested 19-
year-old man of the unit block of
Southgate Drive, Mt. Laurel on
July 16 at 4 p.m. He was arrested
and charged with invasion of pri-
vacy after an investigation re-
vealed he posted intimate photo-
graphs of a female acquaintance
online. He was released pending a
court hearing.
A resident on Foxwood Drive
reported that sometime between
July 16 and July 17 someone en-
tered his garage and stole a radio,
a cell phone, and various compact
discs valued at approximately
$2,000. The overhead garage door
had mistakenly been left open by
the homeowner overnight.
A resident on the 300 block of
Candlewood Lane reported that
between July 16 and July 17 some-
one cut the rear plastic window of
his Jeep and stole several items of
an undetermined value from in-
side the vehicle.
A resident from the first block
of Dickens Lane reported that be-
tween July 16 and July 17 some-
one entered two vehicles that
were parked in his driveway. A
GPS valued at $200 was taken.
Both vehicles were unlocked.
An employee of Mt. Laurel
Township Public Works reported
that two steel gates, valued at
$350, were stolen from township
property on Gaskill Road. The
theft occurred between July 16
and July 17.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 26-
year-old man of Sylvan Court,
Delran, on July 18 at 1 p.m. Police
were called to the 200 block of
Burnamwood Drive on July 18 at
approximately 12:50 p.m. for the
report of a suspicious male jump-
ing over a fence in to a rear yard.
Responding officers located the
man in the rear yard of a resi-
dence. There was evidence that
he attempted to enter the resi-
dence through a rear window. He
was charged with attempted bur-
glary and criminal mischief. Bail
was set at $7,500 and he was com-
mitted to the Burlington County
Jail.
A resident of the 300 block of
Rancocas Boulevard reported a
theft from a vehicle. The incident
occurred between 8 p.m., July 16,
and 8 a.m., July 17. A GPS, valued
at approximately $150, was taken.
Entry was gained through an un-
secured door.
A resident of the 300 block of
Cedar Lane reported a theft from
a vehicle. The incident occurred
between 6 a.m., July 16, and 6
a.m., July 17. A portable televi-
sion, valued at approximately $80,
was taken. Entry was gained
through an unsecured door.
A resident of the first block of
Periwinkle Drive reported a bur-
glary and theft to their residence.
The incident occurred between
7:30 a.m. July 20 and 10:15 p.m. July
21. Entry was gained by forcing a
rear window. Jewelry, valued at ap-
proximately $1,000, was taken.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 38-
year-old man of the 800 block of
Bradley Court, Mt. Laurel, on
July 22, for driving while intoxi-
cated. He was stopped on Route 38
at 3:21 a.m. and charged with
driving while intoxicated and re-
leased pending a municipal court
hearing.
A resident of the first block of
Boothby Drive reported a burgla-
ry and theft to their residence.
The incident occurred between
July 14 and July 20. Entry was
gained through an unsecured
window. Jewelry and cash, valued
at undetermined amount, were
taken.
An employee of the Mt. Laurel
Municipal Utilities Authority re-
ported that a fire hydrant was
stolen from the 100 block of Wil-
low Turn on July 12 between mid-
night and 8 a.m. The hydrant is
valued at approximately $1,000.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 30-
year-old man of the 800 block of
Kings Croft, Cherry Hill on July
25. He was stopped for motor vehi-
cle violations on Route 73 at 1 a.m.
and charged with driving while
intoxicated. He was also charged
with hindering his own arrest
after providing a false identity to
the arresting officer. He was re-
leased pending a municipal court
hearing.

At their annual convention,
Mt. Laurel Librarys teen librari-
an, Samantha Marker, received a
Rising Star Award from the
New Jersey Library Association
for her creative and innovative
work with teens at the library.
The award was presented on
Tuesday, June 5 at an awards din-
ner.
Under Markers leadership, the
Mt. Laurel Librarys teen pro-
gram is teen driven and includes
an active Teen Advisory Board
(TAB) who are involved and care
about the library. A Teen Space
remodel in 2009 was done with
teen input on all decisions, from
paint to furniture, and decorated
with teen produced artwork.
Marker coordinates a success-
ful summer teen volunteer pro- gram of about 65 teens per sum-
mer who handle all summer book
club registration and prize distri-
bution. Volunteers are recruited
through school visitation and
community outreach.
Marker started the Mega Mega
Teen Tunes concert series, which
is now in its fifth year. Performers
are teen bands, publicity is done
by teens (video promos, T shirt
campaign in school day of the
show, teens help administer the
Facebook group), hosted by teens
and are attended by more than
100 people.
Marker also championed cre-
ative teen programs focused on
physical activity including
Dodgeball Lockdown, Humans vs.
Zombies, Parkour class, LARP
(Live Action Role Play) and Nerf
battles.
She has forged an active part-
nership between the Friends of
the Library and the Teen Adviso-
ry Board.
The Friends support teen pro-
grams through funds donated in a
coin vortex wishing well at the
library, which garners about $800
a year in pennies, nickels, dimes
and quarters. In turn, members
of TAB provide help with the
Friends quarterly book sales by
assisting with the set-up and
clean up.
We are so pleased that Saman-
thas hard work with the teens of
Mt. Laurel was recognized in this
way, said library director, Kathy
Schalk-Greene.
Marker leads an active, vibrant
teen program and contributes to
create the overall face-to-face and
online experience of the library
for all Mt. Laurel Library cus-
tomers.
