1) HISTORY OF THE INDUSTRY

According to a three-year industrial plan (2007-2009) issued by the municipal government, Xiamen plans to raise the capacity of its annual bus production to 40,000 in 2010. HoTheyver, with the sales of King Long down by 33.6 percent yearon-year,to 1,956,during the first quarter and the sales of Golden Dragon plunging by 44 percent to 2,621 units, the future of the plan remains uncertain and bus manufacturers are are trying to devise methods to make up for slow sales and decreasing revenue. According to the bus manufacturers, cost control is seen as an important measure to tackle the sluggish bus industry and they are already trying it out. Raw materials account for more than 85 percent of our total cost, Jiang Shihuang, King Longs general manager, said.

King Long saved nearly 38 million yuan in 2008 by making joint purchases, worth 610 million yuan with other bus makers and related industry enterprises. In addition, their co-operation with

9 RUBY BUS PVT LTD

the Shanghai Auto Mart E-Procurement Co Ltd and on-line purchases, saved the company a total of 100 million yuan last year.

In order to reduce cost further in 2009, our company plans to increase online purchases from 40 perceny in 2008 to 100 percent this year, Yu Feng, purchasing director of King Long, said.

For King Long, cost control is also reflected in their daily consumption of electricity and paper.

All offices try to use only two-thirds of the fluorescent lights at a time and employees are encouraged to reuse paper.

A sign on the printer and fax machine reads: Please print both sides of the paper. The manager of Golden Dragon could not be contacted as he was out of town. As a measure to help the interests of local enterprises, the Xiamen government will also allocate 50 million yuan in 2009 to construct an automobile industry park, but this park is not specifically targeted to the bus industry.

Acquisitions and mergers by manufacturers continue, but the real emphasis in the past two years has been on the negotiation of joint ventures and establishment of wholly-owned subsidiaries around the globe, particularly in the component supply sector.

10 RUBY BUS PVT LTD

Future challenges remain numerous. Raw materials prices, notably steel and aluminium have risen inexorably and the process of oil and gas, which have hit their highest levels ever, have added devastatingly to manufacturers costs.

The tendering process of many parts of the world remains complex and costly and proposed future legislation on safety, exhaust emissions, noise and on manufacturing processes, continue to add substantially to each manufacturers research, development and production costs.

Inevitably, manufacturers are looking to reduce production costs and this has meant investigation into moving facilities to low cost (particularly low labour cost) countries.

This has resulted in an increasing shift of facilities in Europe from the Theyst to central and eastern European countries and in some instance to other regions, notably to the far east.

2) DEVELOPMENT OF THE IN DU S T RY
With a growing public awareness of environmental protection, electric vehicles are trendy. Yet the high cost of their crucial poTheyr cell is still a drag on industry growth.

The poTheyr cell now costs almost half of the price for an entire electric vehicle , making mass commercialization difficult, industrial insiders say.

Continue developing the network of cluster group companies, suppliers and support agencies that are committed to working collaboratively to address key industry impediments and issues.

Build a pool of highly skilled labour in the region that supports the continued growth of the cluster through the local delivery of automotive manufacturing Bus, Truck & Trailer qualifications, workplace placements for high school students and a preemployment manufacturing skills training course.

Through the provision of targeted business development programs, service sand workshop devlop a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and export amongst cluster group companies with a focus on lean manufacturing. Assess the feasibility of establishing a centre for manufacturing excellence in Macksvilled that focuses on best practise in design, skills training.

Technology at work
There are three production plants at Ahmedabad, each having its own individual production infrastructure and capabilities independent of each other in as much as that they have their own machinery and production facilities sufficient for their separate production. The Ahmedabad plants are situated at GIDC, Phase lll, in the Naroda Industrial Estate, in Ahmedabad, on an area of approximately 50,000 sq. metres, employing approximately 1800 workers and 70 staff members and producing 3000 bus bodies per annum.

35 RUBY BUS PVT LTD

Production Process :
The bare chassis is inducted into the workshop and the flooring, composed of rolled channels, is mounted on the vehicles by U bolts. The side structure and the roof structure consisting of carefully-engineered steel pressed sections of different thicknesses with strongly gusseted joints and pre-assembled on jigs and fixtures are mounted on to the vehicles forming sturdy steel "fortress" around the passengers. The strength of this construction ensures the greater life span of the vehicle. Each and every structural component is carefully phosphated using the ten tank process recommended by ICI and three coats of anti-rust paint are then applied to prevent corrosion. Once the structure is assembled together the entire structure is given another coat of anti-rust paint before the panelling work begins. The flooring is made either of aluminium, chequered plate or marine plywood covered with vinyl material. The side panels may be of either plastic coated aluminium sheets or plush upholstery fabric and the exterior roof is made of aluminium panel riveted on to the steel superstructure. Before the fitment of interior roof panels, the vehicle is water tested under a shoTheyr of water resembling artificially simulated Theyather condition, in order to check for leakages before the fitment of the roof panels. The doors and other fitments are fitted on to the

36 RUBY BUS PVT LTD

vehicles, then the vehicle proceeds for painting process. The painting process consists of one coat of each primer, 4 coats of primer surface and 3 coats of finished paints. All vehicles are spray painted in a pressurized paint booth and baked to a temperature of 70 degrees in oven. The windows and other retro-fits are fitted on to the vehicles. Before delivery the vehicle is again water tested to check for water leakage into the vehicle. Stringent quality control checks are carried out before the final dispatch of the vehicle, so that the vehicle leaves the workshop premises in the best condition. Ruby Bus offers a complete range of seats ranging from those required in a standard city bus to fully reclining seats in a choice of attractive colours. Seats are constructed in Ruby Bus's own factory to ensure total quality control. Road testing is carried out to ensure that the vibrations and noise within the vehicle are nonexistent. The entire cycle for the production of one complete vehicle ranges from approximately 3 to 4 Theyeks for a standard bus to 6 to 8 Theyeks for luxury bus and 8 to 10 Theyeks for an air-condition bus.
