Pipe Span Calculation (By Piya K.

)
(Formulation refer from Pipe Stress Handbook in SI Unit)
Enter weight per unit lenght of pipe(kg/m.) , W Enter section modulus of pipe (mm3.) , Z Enter moment of inertia (mm4.) , I Enter pipe span between adjacent (m.) , L Enter modulus of elasticity (N/mm2) , E
calculate Reset
24.3 52680 3010500 7 203390

Note : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Span are limited by maximum deflection of 12.5 mm Pipe stress not exceed 28 N/mm2. Pipe are assumed to be filled with water modulus of elasticity of carbon steel pipe (A106 Gr.B) = 203390 N/mm2 modulus of elasticity of carbon steel pipe (A312 TP316L) = 195120 N/mm2 span are based on formulae : d = ( 98 x 10^6 w L^4 / EI ) 7. stress are based on formulae : s = 981 wL^2 / z Example 1 We have carbon steel pipe 4" sch 40 then the input data are as follow W = 24.3 kg/m Z = 52680 mm3 I = 3010500 mm4 E = 203390 N/mm2 Try L = 7 m. You will get the result as this deflection = 9.338 mm. pipestress = 22.17 N/mm2 " This is OK becuase the result within limit as note 1 and 2 then you can use span at 7 m for pipe 4" sch 40. "
