FEAST OF SS. PETER AND PAUL

Holy Day of Obligation Friday, June 29, 2012

Nativity of the Venerable Glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, John.
The Nativity of the Holy Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, John: The Gospel (Lk. 1: 57-80) relates that the righteous parents of Saint John the Baptist -- the Priest Zachariah and Elizabeth, lived in the ancient city of Hebron, and reached old age being childless, since Elizabeth was barren. One time, Saint Zachariah was making Divine services at the Jerusalem Temple and saw the Archangel Gabriel, standing on the right side of the incense offertory. He predicted, that Saint Zachariah would father a son, who would announce the Saviour -- the Messiah, awaited by the Old Testament Church. Zachariah was troubled, and fear fell upon him. He had doubts that in old age it was possible to have a son, and he asked for a sign. And it was given to him -- it appeared at the same time as a chastisement for his unbelief: Zachariah was struck speechless until the time of the fulfillment of the archangel's words. Saint Elizabeth came to be with child, and fearing derision over the lateness of her pregnancy, she kept it secret for five months, until there came visiting her distant relative the All-Blessed Virgin Mary, to share with her Her own joy. Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Holy Spirit, was the first to greet the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God. And together with her Saint John also -- in the womb of his mother Righteous Elizabeth -- did greet "with leaps as in song" the Most Holy Virgin Mary and the Son of God incarnated within Her. It became time, and Saint Elizabeth gave birth to a son, and all the relatives and acquaintances rejoiced together with her. On the eighth day, in accord with the law of Moses, was made the circumcision. His mother named him John. Everyone was amazed, since no one in their family had been named such. When they asked Saint Zachariah about this, he motioned for a tablet and wrote on it: "John is his name" -- and immediately the binding of his tongue at the prediction of the archangel was unbound, and Saint Zachariah, at the prompting of the Holy Spirit, glorified God and pronounced the words of prophecy about the AdventComing into the world of the Messiah, and about his own son John -- the Forerunner of the Lord. After the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ and the worship of the shepherds and the Magi, wicked king Herod gave orders to kill all the infants. Hearing about this, Saint Elizabeth fled into the wilderness and hid in a cave. Saint Zachariah as a priest was at Jerusalem and was doing his priestly service in the Temple. Herod sent soldiers to him to find out the abode of the infant John and his mother. Zachariah answered, that their whereabouts were unknown to him, and he was killed right there in the Temple. Righteous Elizabeth continued to live in the wilderness with her son and she died there. The lad John, protected by an Angel, dwelt in the wilderness until such time, when he came preaching about repentance and was himself vouchsafed worthy to baptize the Lord Who was come into the world.

Feast of St. John the Baptist

Amen, I say to you, there had not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist. (Matthew 11,11) Among all the saints whom the Eastern Church venerates, St. John the Baptist holds a unique place. He alone, of all the Saints, except for the Mother of God, has a feast honoring his Conception, and another honoring his Nativity. The great esteem he enjoys in the Eastern Church is evident from the fact that during the Church Year as many as six feasts are celebrated in his honor: the feasts of his Conception, Nativity, Beheading, the First, Second and Third Finding of his Head, and the Synaxis following the feast of the Theophany. The Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 24 Of all the feasts of St. John the Baptist, that of his Nativity (June 24) is the greatest. This feast, like that of his Conception, was already known in the fourth century. We have sermons on this feast given by St. John Chrysostom, St. Ambrose and St. Augustine. In his sermon for this day St. Augustine says: Today we are celebrating the Nativity of St. John. This is an honor which no other saint enjoys. Throughout the entire Christian world only two persons are honored in their nativity: our Lord Jesus Christ and St. John the Baptist. St. Augustine does not mention the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God here, since this feast had not yet been instituted. In the West, we find the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Foreunner in the oldest calendar of the African Church from the fifth century. At the time we celebrate the feast of the Nativity of St. John, in pre-Christian times our people had the custom of celebrating the feast of Kupalo. In regard to the festival of Kupalo in Ukraine, Professor S. Kylymnyk says: The greatest, most exuberant festival, which ended the summer solstice cycle of the pre-Christian calendar festivals was the festival of youth of boys and girls called Kupalo or Kupajlo, which after the acceptance of Christianity was associated with the church festival of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Hence this feast bears the double name of John Kupalo, like the spring songs and dances, reach back to the earliest times, to pristine poetry and rituals in honor of the life-giver, the sun. THERES A BIT MORE TO IT BEYOND KIBBY, CURRY AND KOVBASA

We are justly proud of our various Eastern Catholic Churches and their Traditions. However, we often overlook the most basic element we are apostolic Christians, we have a vocation and ministry in the world today. North America is spiritually hungry for the tradition of which we should be the bearers and heralds. We are organizing an Encounter of the Eastern Catholic Churches of Canada and the US, to be held near Parma, Ohio, September 20-23, 2012. At it, we shall listen to the Lord speaking through various presenters, through our liturgical services, and through one another as we have the opportunity to deepen our experience of our identity and mission. The theme will be Together in Christ: the Spirituality of Discipleship: a Call to Holiness. Please reserve these dates for this spiritual opportunity for growth and renewal. Further details will appear in our bulletin, diocesan newspaper or online at: http://encounter2012easterncatholicchurches.org/
