INT. LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON NOELIA sits on the couch watching television and scratching her arm incessantly. A BOTTLE OF CODEINE and a glass of water sit on a coffee table in front of her. The curtains are drawn, shrouding the room in a dull, indeterminate light. A MAN speaks from the TV. ...you to ask answer repeat MAN (V.O.) need to reassess. Noelia grabs the bottle and pours a pill into her mouth, washing it down with water. The doorbell rings. NOELIAS POV Noelia opens the door, revealing JULIE, who stands smiling. She holds a BASKET. JULIE Hi! INT. LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER Noelia sits on the couch again, itching. Julie peers around curiously. MAN (V.O.) ...but thats okay, because today, were going to put you on the path to emotional-psycho-spiritual stability. Julie notices the bottle of Codeine. JULIE (pointing) Whats that? NOELIA (glancing over) Medicine. JULIE Oh... She stands awkwardly. Noelia ignores her.

JULIE (CONTD) Hey, let me get out the blend I made for you. I mixed these myself... She pulls a bottle out of the basket and sits next to Noelia. JULIE (CONTD) ...based on whats the most tensionrelieving. Here, lay your head down and Ill show you. Noelia gives her a look. JULIE (CONTD) Come on, itll just take a minute! Make ya feel a lot better, I promise! Noelia shrugs and lays her head on Julies lap. Julie removes the dropper from the bottle. JULIE (CONTD) Now, close your eyes, Im going to put a few drops on your forehead. She does. JULIE (CONTD) Innt that nice? NOELIA Its fine. JULIE I know things dont make sense sometimes, Noelia. Its hard, theres no gettin around that. The only remedy Ive found is prayer. Its like my uncle used to say--I mean, not--he wasnt really my uncle, we dated a little bit in college... Julie blathers on about her uncle. Her voice fades out. CLOSE ON Noelia. The drugs begin to hit her. Shes about to fall asleep when... MAN (V.O) Say it, Noelia. Noelias eyes pop open. She sits upright and looks over at the TV screen. The Man speaks to her directly.

NOELIA Say what? ON TV The Man, a talking head against a white background. MAN Let it out. Let yourself feel again. BACK ON COUCH NOELIA I dont want to. ON TV MAN Then youll die this way. Is that what you want? Noelia thinks this over. Julie continues to babble. NOELIA (to Julie) You make me sick. JULIE What? NOELIA Youre always pretending. Dont you get tired? JULIE Um... NOELIA One day, you know, we are all going to stop breathing. And then we have to face it. Everything we didnt want to see. I think, now...why are we pretending. This? She picks up Julies bottle of oil, gaining momentum. NOELIA (CONTD) It is just fake. You know? She opens the bottle and pours it out on the floor.

NOELIA (CONTD) And now, it is gone! One second, and it is gone. Because you cannot pretend forever. You have to stop. Julie stands. JULIE I think you need to be alone right now. Lets get you into bed. Everythings gonna be fine. She holds out her hand to help Noelia up. Noelia grabs Julies wrist. NOELIA Is that it? Is that all you have to say? JULIE I dont-NOELIA To have a child die inside of you. It is not going to be fine. JULIE Im gonna pray for you. Im gonna pray that you start feelin like yourself again. Noelia scoffs. She lets go of Julies hand. NOELIA Go fuck yourself, Julie. Shocked, Julie exits. MAN (V.O.) How do you feel? NOELIA Better. FADE OUT.
