Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new edit ions as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australi an Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australi a
Catalogue of Publications; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publi cati ons, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head off ice of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Information Systems—
Interconnection. It is identical with and has been reproduced from ISO/IEC 8802-5:1992, Information
technology—Local and metropolitan area networks, Part 5: Token ring access method and physical layer
specifications.
The Standard is one of a series of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Standards which are currently
under development. Since OSI Standards are developmental, there may be some minor difficulties
encountered in their implementation. For this reason, Standards Australia will be providing, through the
OSI Help Desk, a service to coordinate and disseminate information concerning difficulties which are
identified in using this Standard.
Under arrangements made between Standards Australia and the international Standards bodies, ISO
and IEC, as well as certain other Standards organizations, users of this Standard are advised of the
following:
(a) Copyright is vested in Standards Australia.
This is a free 9 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

(b) The number of this Standard is not reproduced on each page; its identity is shown only on the cover
and title pages.
For the purpose of this Australian Standard, the ISO/IEC text should be modified as follows:
(i) Terminology The words ‘Australian Standard’ should replace the words ‘International Standard’
wherever they appear.
(ii) References The references to International Standards should be replaced by references to the
following Australian Standards:

1. General
1.1 Scope. For the purpose of compatible interconnection of data processing
equipment via a local area network (LAN) using the token ring access method, this
standard
(1) Defines the frame format, including delimiters, addressing, routing infor-
mation, and frame-check sequence (FCS), to allow operation on a single ring
or on multiple rings connected by source routing or transparent bridges, and
introduces medium access control (MAC) frames, timers, counters, and
priority stacks (see Section 3);
(2) Defines the MAC protocol. The finite-state machine and state tables are
supplemented with a prose description of the algorithms (see Section 4);
(3) Defines the physical layer (PHY) functions of symbol encoding and decod-
ing, symbol timing, and latency buffering (see Section 5);
(4) Describes the services provided by the MAC to the station management
(SMT) and the logical link control sublayer (LLC) and the services provided
by the PHY to SMT and the MAC. These services are defined in terms of
service primitives and associated parameters (see Section 6);
(5) Defines the 4 and 16 Mb/s, shielded twisted pair attachment of the station
to the medium including the definition of the medium interface connector
(MIC) (see Section 7);
(6) Includes the PICS proforma in compliance with the relevant requirements,
and in accordance with the relevant guidance, given in ISO 9646-2 [7] 1
(see Annex C).
The defini tion of suitabl e media (t wisted pair, coaxial cable, and optical fiber)
for connect ing stations that meet the attachment standard specifi ed herein is a
subject for future consideration. Unti l such time as these media are specified, t he
