My Mommy School Philosophy

Mommy School is all about constructive fun with developmentally appropriate learning!
My philosophy is that toddlers learn through experiences. I believe that toddlers learn by seeing and doing, so Mommy School is intended to be action-based. I believe that most 2- and 3-year-olds are not yet ready for pencil/paper activities simply because they dont learn this way! My hope is to provide you with a few tools to help guide your toddlers learning. For me, the most exciting part about teaching my toddler is seeing the world through his eyes. He is starting to understand the world for the very first time! Because this is the first time that our toddlers are exposed to many concepts, please dont expect your toddler to catch on immediately. It can be difficult at times to gage your own success because toddlers cant always communicate exactly what they are learning. You will see their progress later on as they continue to build connections to the world around them! I compile a variety of activities in my Mommy School units, but I dont expect to do them all. Allow your child to experience letters, numbers, colors, shapes, and other thematic elements in their own unique way. You will quickly see that your child thrives with some learning methods and not others. Pick and choose activities that work best for you and your child. I am trained as an Early Childhood Educator, and I taught First Grade for 4 years. However, I am building my Mommy School units from a mothers perspective. I am a Mom first, and a Teacher second. Remember that I have searched the web high and low seeking the very best toddler activities. I am not the genius behind all of themI simply gather them all in one place. Be sure to look at the credits section for more great ideas! Most of all have fun! Children will see your attitude, and will respond similarly. Enjoy discovering the world with your child.

ACTIVITIES & GAMES

Apple Picking Copy the apple patterns on red, yellow, and green paper. Place the apples all around the room (or outside). Have the children walk around the room and go apple picking. Place apples in a basket. When you are done, try some of these activities: Count the apples Sort by different colors. In a group, make a picture graph your favorite color of apple. Apples Alphabet Print the attached ABC apples and place in a basket. Pass around the circle and say the chant. Then choose an apple from the basket and say the sound of the letter: Apple, apple Nice and round. Pick an apple And make its sound! Sensory Apples Use the apple template to cut out apple shapes out of cardboard, sandpaper, foil, red flannel and bubble wrap. Paint or color apples red. Once dry, help child feel each apple. Bob for Apples Place a group of apples in a large bucket, floating in the water. Let your kids try to get them out with their mouths. Use small apples or apple slices for smaller children. Pin the Apple on the Tree Create a large poster board apple tree and tape to a door or wall. Use the apple templates and label with childrens names. Add a tape loop to the back. Blindfold children and let them take turns trying to place an apple on the tree! Pass the Apple Game Pass around a fabric apple or bean bag. Play just like Hot Potato! When the music on, the apple is passed around the circle. When the music is shut off, whoever is holding the apple is out. Felt Apple and Caterpillar Cut out 2 red apple shapes, a small brown stem, and a green leaf from felt. Cut around edges with pinking shears. Sew the 2 apple shapes together. Glue on a stem and green leaf. Sew a long felt tube as a caterpillar. Glue on eyes. Cut out a circle shape in the center of the front of the apple. Let the child wiggle the caterpillar through the apples hole!

ARTS & CRAFTS

Stained Glass Apples Cut out an apple shape from red construction paper. Add a stem and leaf if you wish. Cut out the center of the apple, leaving approximately 2 inches around the edges. Cover the entire front of the apple with clear contact paper. Cover the back (sticky side of contact paper) with squares of red, yellow, and green tissue paper, creating a collage. Hang in the window so light shines through. This will look like stained glass! Half-Eaten Paper Plate Apple Paint the edges of a paper plate red, but leave the center white. Stamp a pencil eraser in black paint to add the seeds in the white part. Once dry, cut the outside wings of the plate to leave an apple core! Add leaves and stem.

Thumbprint Apple This would be a fun activity for the whole family! Create a tree from brown paper or paint your own! Stamp thumbs in red ink and place on tree. Add stem and leave. Round Rock Apple Go on a hunt for a round, smooth stone to use as your apple. Wash your stone. Paint with red tempera paint, covering stone completely. Once dry, glue on a pipecleaner stem and leaf. Apple Craft Printable Create your own paper apple, showing the inside core:

Fit the strip around childs head and staple to make a band. Add a smaller strip of paper at the bottom of the strip to create the handle of the pot. Add a red apple to the front of the hat with your childs name. Apple Tree Paint childs arm brown from the elbow down (arms, hand, fingers.) Stamp on paper. This is the tree. Let dry. Let child dip fingers in green paint and stamp on top to create the tree. Finally, do a few apples by dipping fingers in red paint and stamping on top of tree.

Paper plate apple pie Paint the center of a paper plate red. Sprinkle on some cinnamon, and you have an apple pie! Apple Prints Cut apples in half. Wipe off extra moisture on paper towels. Dip apples in tempera paint and stamp on paper. (Tip: Be sure that the apple slices are only covered by a thin layer of paint so you can see the apples star when stamped.) Try making prints in yellow, red, and green paint! Once dry, draw on stems and leaves. This would make a lovely wreath!

Apple Tree Create a tree shape out of brown construction paper and glue to a piece of white paper. Stamp a cup or a toilet paper tube in red paint and then on the tree to create the apples. Torn Apple Collage Cut out an apple shape out of cardstock. Have squares of red construction paper prepared. Ask child to glue them to the apple shape, overlapping slightly, to create a collage. Stamp childs hand in green paintthis will be the stem of the apple.

SCIENCE
Apples Sink or Float Make predictions about whether an apple will sink or float in water. Use the attached sink or float worksheet to record observations. Apple Experiment Place apple slices on 2 different plates. Sprinkle lemon juice on one plate of apples and instruct the children to check on the apples on both plates throughout the morning. Of course the ones without lemon juice will turn brown. Discuss how these changes were caused by exposure to the air, but the lemon juice protected the plate of apples. Apple Taste Testing As a group, try a red, yellow, and green apple. Decide which one you like the best! Use words to describe the taste such as sweet, sour, etc. Parts of an Apple Draw a large apple on a poster or dry erase board. Label the parts of an apple including: Stem, leaf, flesh, skin, seeds

Apple Observations Explore and observe raw, cooked, and baked apples. Cut a couple of apples into slices and bake/simmer apples. Let children observe the changes in color, texture, and taste. Guess My Seeds Before cutting into an apple, ask child to estimate how many seeds the apple might have. Cut open the apple and find out how many seeds are really inside. Apple Life Cycle Discuss the life cycle of an apple. After an apple seed is planted, it takes a few weeks before it will sprout. The roots grow down into the soil, and the stems grow upward toward the light. Leave begin to develop on the stems. Slowly, an apple tree grows. Apple trees do no bare fruit until they are 5-8 years old. White blossoms appear in the spring. The flowers are pollinated by bees and insects. When the blossoms fall off, small baby apples grow back in their place. Only flowers that have been pollinated can grow into apples. By late summer, the apples are fully grown and ripe. Apple Stamping Game Use the apple stamping record sheet. Draw a number card 1-10. When that number is drawn, help child to use a marker to cover the numeral on that apple OR stamp it out. Apple Jacks Patterns String Apple Jacks on a piece of yarn to make a necklace. (It is easiest to thread the yarn by rolling a piece of Scotch tape around the threading end.) Create a pattern with the colors. Apple Tree Math Print the attached apple trees. Set out apple trees with a basket of red pompoms or buttons. Fingerprint Apples Use the attached number sheet. Stamp finger in red ink/paint to create the number of apples specified in each box. Worms In My Apples! Create an extra set of apple number cards from the apple seed counting game. But this time, use a hole punch to punch out the dots. Create worms using green pipe cleaners. Ask child to make the worm wiggle through the apples holes. Count the holes as you go!

LITERATURE CONNECTIONS
Ten Apples Up On Top After reading the story, use the attached sheet of numbered apples. Color and cut out the 10 red apples. Arrange in order in a tower. Draw a picture of child underneath so the apples appear on top of his/her head. Glue down on tall piece of white paper.

FLANNEL BOARD FUN

Apple Flannel Board Game Cut out apples from red, yellow, and green felt. Place a group on the flannel board. Ask child to close their eyes and remove one. See if child can guess which apple is missing! Apple Pretend Play Help child to scoop up oatmeal out of a tub using measuring cups and place into muffin baking pans to make apple muffins. Pre-Writing Skills Complete the attached apple pre-writing skills by tracing the worms paths to the apples! Ten Apples Up On Top Take an egg carton and cut out the individual egg compartments. Apple Feast! Have an apple feast including many of the yummy apple treats in this recipe/snack section. Apple Surprise Remove the core from an apple. Pack the hole with peanut butter and refrigerate. Remove from the fridge. Slice and serve! Apple Tree Snack Spread cream cheese on a Ritz cracker. Stick a pretzel stick as the trunk of the tree. Let child place red M&Ms on the cracker. These are the apples on the tree. Apple Rice Krispies Treats Add a bit of red food coloring as you are making Rice Krispies treats. Form into circular balls to form apple shapes. Add a mini Twix bar as the stem and a gummy worm if desired! Mini Apple Pies Make mini apple pies by filling a mini pre-made piecrust with apple pie filling. Bake and enjoy! Apple Muffins 2 c. flour 1 tsp. baking powder tsp. baking soda tsp. salt c. butter 1 c. white sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. chopped apples Topping 1/3 c. packed brown sugar 1 T. all-purpose flour 1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 T. butter Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 12-cup muffin pan. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, beat together butter, sugar, and eggs until smooth. Mix in vanilla. Stir in apples and gradually blend in the flour mixture. Spoon the mixture into the prepared muffin pan. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Cut in butter until mixture is like coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over tops of mixture in muffin pan. Bake 20 minutes in preheated oven or until toothpick inserted into the center of muffin comes out clean. Allow to sit 5 minutes before removing muffins from pan and cool on a wire rack. Apple Cupcakes Bake a batch of cupcakes. Remove from the wrapping. Ice the entire cupcake with red frostingnot just the top! Dip 1 mini pretzel stick in melted chocolate. Color of the Day Activities for any Color Everyone dresses in the color of the day! Add desired color to playdough and use at the art table. Take a walk to look for that particular color of car. Dip cooked spaghetti in the desired color of paint and let it dance across white paper. Make necklaces by stringing buttons of the desired color onto wire. Add food coloring to the white glue. Tint jello, water, milk, or pancakes purple. Go color shopping and walk from room to room shopping for items in the house that are specific color.

NUMBER: ONE
Number 1 Pattern Print the attached number 1 pattern. Decorate it with 1 apple sticker or stamp. Writing 1 Use this rhyme to help your children remember how to write the number 1: Down goes your line When you make a one. It is easy And its lots of fun! The Little Red House With No Doors

Once upon a time, there was a little boy who was tired of all his toys and tired of all his play. "What shall I do?" he asked his mother. And his mother, who always knew beautiful things for little boys to do said, "You shall go on a journey and find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside." This really made the little boy wonder. Usually his mother had good ideas, but he thought that this one was very strange. "Which way shall I go?" he asked his mother. "I don't know where to find a little red house with no doors and no window. "Go down the lane past the farmer's house and over the hill," said his mother, "and then hurry back as soon as you can and tell me all about your journey." So the little boy put on his cap and his jacket and started out. He had not gone very far down the lane when he came to a merry little girl dancing in the sunshine. Her cheeks were like pink blooms' petals and she was singing like a robin. "Do you know where I shall find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside?" asked the little boy. The girl laughed, "Ask my father, the farmer," she said. "Perhaps he knows." So the little boy went on until he came to the great brown barn where the farmer kept barrels of fat potatoes and baskets of yellow squashes and golden pumpkins. The farmer himself stood in the doorway looking out over the green pastures and yellow grain fields. "Do you know where I shall find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside?" asked the little boy of the farmer. The farmer laughed too. "I lived a great many years and I never saw one." he chuckled, " but ask Granny who lives at the foot of the hill. She knows how to make molasses, taffy, popcorn balls, and red mittens! Perhaps she can direct you." So the little boy went on farther still, until he came to the Granny, sitting in her pretty garden of herbs and marigolds. She was wrinkled as a walnut and as smiling as the sunshine.

Please, Dear Granny," said the little boy. "Where shall I find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside?" Granny was knitting a red mitten, and when she heard the little boy's question, she laughed so cheerily that the wool ball rolled off her lap and down the little pebbly path. "I should like to find that little house myself," she chuckled. "I would be warm when the frosty night comes and the starlight would by prettier than a candle. But ask the wind who blows about so much and listens at all the chimneys. Perhaps the wind can direct you." So the little boy took off his cap and tipped it politely to the Granny and went on up the hill rather sorrowfully. He wondered if his mother, who usually knew almost everything, had perhaps made a mistake. The wind was coming down the hill as the little boy climbed up. As they met, the wind turned about and went along, singing beside the little boy. It whistled in his ear, and pushed him and dropped a pretty leaf into his hand. "I wonder," thought the little boy, after they had gone along together for a while, "if the wind could help me find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside." The wind cannot speak in our words, but it went singing ahead of the little boy until it came to an orchard. There it climbed up in the apple tree and shook the branches. When the little boy caught up, there at his feet lay a great rosy apple. The little boy picked up the apple. It was as much as his two hands could hold. It was red as the sun had been able to paint it, and the thick brown stem stood up as straight as a chimney, and it had no doors and no windows. Was there a star inside? The little boy called to the wind, "Thank you," and the wind whistled back, "You're welcome." Then the little boy gave the apple to his mother. His mother took a knife (at this point, start cutting an apple crosswise) and cut the apple through the center. Oh, how wonderful! There inside the apple, lay a star holding brown seeds. It is too wonderful to eat without looking at the star, isn't it?" the little boy said to his mother. "Yes indeed," answered his mother.

One day Mouse saw a lovely ripe apple on the apple tree. It was red and shiny, and it looked delicious. Mouse waited for the apple to fall. Along came Hen. Hello, Mouse! What are you doing? I am waiting for the apple to fall, said Mouse. That is a good idea, said Hen hopefully. I will wait with you. So Mouse and Hen waited for the apple to fall. Along came Dog. Hello, Mouse! Hello, Hen! What are you doing? We are waiting for the apple to fall, said Hen. Apples are my favorite, said Dog greedily. I will wait with you. So Mouse, Hen and Dog waited for the apple to fall. Along came Goat. Hello, Mouse! Hello, Hen! Hello, Dog! What are you doing? We are waiting for the apple to fall, said Dog. I love apples, said Goat hungrily. I will wait with you. So Mouse, Hen, Dog and Goat waited for the apple to fall. Along came Cow Hello, Mouse! Hello, Hen! Hello, Dog! Hello, Goat! What are you doing? We are waiting for the apple to fall, said Goat. I will fly up and knock it down, said Hen and she ran towards the tree, flapping her wings. But she tripped and fell on her beak with a bump. I will bark it down, said Dog. He opened his mouth wide. Bow wow! Bow wow! But the apple didn't move. I will butt it down, said Goat. He ran at the tree and butted it as hard as he could. But the apple didn't budge. I have got a good idea! cried Cow. She jumped up and down on all four hoofs. The tree trembled and the apple began to quiver. Everybody jump! cried Cow, jumping up and down. Goat jumped up and down. Dog jumped up and down. Hen jumped up and down. The tree shook and the apple wobbled, but still the apple did not fall. Meanwhile, Mouse waited patiently. Let's go, said Cow grumpily. That apple is probably rotten anyway. Or sour, said Goat. Or hard, said Dog. Or soft, said Hen. Now only Mouse was left. All of a sudden the shiny red apple fell to the ground with a plop! It wasn't rotten or sour or hard or soft. It was the crunchiest, sweetest, most delicious apple Mouse had ever tasted!

Apple Seed Counting and Worms In My Apple

Instructions Print the apples on cardstock. Laminate if desired. Cover the seeds on the apples with chocolate chips, raisins, or another fun snack. Count the seeds as you go! For another fun activity, make another set of apple seed cards. This time, punch out the holes. Create worms with green pipe cleaner. Encourage child to wiggle the worms through the apple cards, counting them as they go.
