5 Ways to Use Google Sites in Teaching & Learning

Although this post refers to "Schools" it is a post from the USA so therefore has a different meaning than we would use in the UK. I particularly like the use of the new page-level permissions options, allowing learners to only edit Google Sites pages that practitioners grant them access to. The 5 ways are...
As a wiki: As a digital portfolio; As a digital file cabinet; As a blog; As a website.

Google docs are also ideal for peer assessment and review. Find out more by using the QR code or the URL below... http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2 012/07/5-ways-to-use-google-sitesin-schools.html

All skills learners need in the "real world" - potential for use in functional skills especially as learners & practitioners have 24/7 access. Index

60-Second Guide To Texting In The Classroom

This post provides a few examples as to how practitioners can utilize text message technology in their classrooms and increase learner engagement and content mastery: Content includes...
Group Texting - currently, links to tools tend to be USA only; Silent In-Class Discussion; Live Polling - including links to tools

Choose a License
More and more learning providers, and/or practitioners, are sharing their work with a wider audience; Creative Commons licensing is a good way to explicitly state the terms by which other people can use and re-use their creative written, audio, and visual works. However, selecting the license that is right for them can be confusing. The Creative Commons organization has a new tool to help people choose the best license for their situation. To select the right license for your work just answer a few questions and a license will be recommended to you. NOTE: Even if practitioners and their learners are not going to use Creative Commons licensing, the Creative Commons license chooser could be helpful in understanding what the various Creative Commons licenses mean.

Cyberbullied From The Playground To The Web

Although not a limiting grade anymore, ensuring your learners are safe, when using technology (social Media), is still an important part of education. The explosive growth of social media in recent years has enabled a lot of new opportunities for learners sharing achievements with family, making plans with new friends and re-living past memories with old friends, just to name a few. The proliferation of social networking also comes with an unfortunate downside. Bullying and nastiness become easier when all they take is a few keystrokes and can be hidden by online anonymity. This post and the infographic raise awareness of the downside. What are your learners doing to protect their younger brothers, sisters, etc.?

Practitioners should spend time exploring this site before recommending it to learners so they can help them navigate it. There is a danger, because it is so information heavy, the Physics Classroom could be a turn-off for learners who are just dropping in looking for something specific.

Plizy
Plizy changes the way learners and/or practitioners discover and share videos and makes videowatching a more personalized and social experience. Plizy allows users to also create a custom channel, which grants them more control over what is watched; the Pandora-like recommendation system is based on the videos users watch and the ones you dont. This allows Plizy to curate content that it knows users will like. It also has a convenient tab where practitioners can communicate with learners based on the videos being watched. Posterous Spaces

Posterous Spaces was bought by Twitter earlier this year, but it appears to still be going strong and hasn't changed at all. I have always liked is the ease with which users can create a group blog. Users can...
allow people to make contributions to their blog by simply sending an email to "yourblog'sname" @ posterous.com. choose to moderate or not moderate those contributions.

Find out more by using the QR code or the URL below... https://posterous.com/

Using the email method of contributing to a group blog is much easier than having to enter permissions for each person to contribute. Practitioners also don't have to spend time walking learners through creating log-in credentials for another service. It's got to be the quickest way to get a classroom full of learners contributing to one blog.

Another add-on for Google Chrome that can facilitate learning! Research is integral to many learning activities, and this Chrome browser extension is a powerful research tool. Split Screen splits the browser into multiple re-sizable windows. By default there are two windows...
- the window on the left opening as a simple notepad for taking notes; and - whatever website users choose to open on the right side of the screen. Alternatively, Split Screen can be set so that only web sites open, perhaps to make comparisons or to research from multiple sources.

There are plenty of online programs that learners can use to practice typing skills, test their typing speed, and test their typing accuracy. They don't however evaluate typing skills while users are going about their daily web browsing or word processing activities. If users do a lot of writing online, Typing Speed Monitor is one way to get accurate feedback on their typing proficiency in real-world settings. Virtual Stock Exchange Games

The Virtual Stock Exchange Game at MarketWatch, based upon Wall Street, offers a challenging interactive experience that is completely free and online. Create fictional portfolios of investments watch values go up and down as it would in a real stock market. Investing success is not guaranteed, and thus assessments cannot be tied to the amount of fictional money learners make or lose. The activity should also have a long time horizon a month at least, a term or year ideally so learners experience the markets fluctuations. Everyone needs to know the basics like what a stock is and how companies sell their stock to the public. A collection of videos that explains these and many other concepts can be found at Investopedia. http://www.investopedia.com/video/#axzz1yrIj arBA; I recommend giving 'players' a relatively small amount of money like 10,000 and choosing the normal version of the game that does not allow certain aggressive financial manoeuvres. There is also an option to keep the game private and password protected.
