Q 1) Define HRM. Explain nature/features/objectives/significance of HRM? Ans: HRM means managing people in the organisation. The main task of the management is to get the work done through and with the people and employees are the people who implement the plans HRM focuses on people. Definition of HRM Edwin Flippo defines HRM/Personnel management Planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the procurement, development, compensation, integration of human resources to end that individual organizational and social objectives are accomplished. Nature/Features of HRM 1) HRM is a process : HRM is a process of 4 important function i.e. acquisition, development, motivation and maintenance of [ADM(2)] a) Acquisition function includes human resource planning, recruitment and selection of employees. b) Development functions includes training and development of employees, with respect to knowledge, attitude, skills and social behaviour. It also includes career development of employees with respect to the individual and organizational goals. c) Motivation functions includes providing recognition and rewarding the employee. It also includes performance appraisal and handling employee grievances d) Maintenance function includes providing safe working conditions of the employees. 2) Focus on Objectives: HRM places emphasis on the accomplishment of objectives. The objectives can be broadly listed under 4 categories. Individual or personal objectives of the objectives Group or departmental objectives Organisational objectives Societal objectives 3) Universal Application : HRM is applicable not only to business organisations, but also to any other types of organization : government, education, social, religious and other organization or institution 4) Continous Process: The organization is composed of people who come from different walks of life and who are different in their outlook and understanding, therefore organisations needs to manage HR on a continous basis. Again there are constant changes in the environment. Therefore there is a need for organization to adapt the environment changes.

5) Integral part of the general management function: HRM involves all managerial decisions, policies and practices than influence HR directly, HR is responsible for selecting the right job and develop an organizational culture that contributes to professional well-being of employees. 6) Development of Team Spirit: HRM aims at developing and maintaining team spirit in every organization unit i.e. groups and department. Such team spirit is required so that the people work effectively together and contribute to the success of the organization. 7) Development of employees potentialities: HRM aims at developing the potentialities of employees to the maximum possible extent, so they gain maximum satisfaction from their job, these potentialities can be developed through effective training and development. 8) Employee motivation: The primary task of the management is that of maintaining an organization that functions willingly and effectively, HR aims at motivating employees so that they become dynamic contributes to the organizational goals. 9) Co-ordination with other functions: In order to achieve organizational objectives HR has to co-ordinate with other functions such as marketing, finance, manufacturing, in planning manpower requirements, recruitment, selection, training, compensation and motivation of employees. 10) Long term benefits: HRM brings long term benefit to the individuals, organization and society as well. Long term gains enables the employees to get benefits through monetary & non-monetary incentives, organization by the way of higher return on investment & society by good quality goods & services.
