The July 11, 2012 meeting of UNAC (Up North Authors Circle) was held at the Lakewood Library. Townsend author Kathleen Marsh began the meeting by explaining a new book publishing concept. Despite the increasing popularity of ebooks, there is still a desire by many readers to physically hold a book, she said. To fill this niche market, a new publication process is being offered by independent bookstores. It involves using a mini-printing press to produce a book from a wide variety of digital sources while the customer waits. It seems to be quickly catching on with self-published authors and is an excellent source for out-of-print books, rare books, etc, which can inexpensively be reborn. Next up was Lynn Burlingham from Lawrence, Kansas, who summers on Lake Archibald. Lynn shared happy news that her 17 page memoir The Freuds, the Tiffanys and Me has been published in New Letters, a highly respected literary journal. She also reported that another of her pieces called Natures Beauty Lingers will appear in the next volume of Voices of the Plains, a collection of short memoirs published annually by her Great Plains Writing Group based in Lawrence. The meeting ended with 2012 Wabeno High School graduate Skylor Challender proving that writing can pay off in big dollars. Skylor shared that he will be leaving in August to attend Northland College in Ashland. I am so excited to tell you that I have been granted a $2000/yr renewable writing scholarship. I want to thank everyone in this group, but especially Kathleen Marsh, for supporting me and challenging me to improve my writing skills. Skylor: I got the scholarship by submitting the Prologue of my fantasy adventure series The Firstborn Elf that we worked on at a couple of UNAC meetings. They liked my work and asked for a second piece so I sent them my short story Finding the Light. The result: I got the scholarship which is worth $8000 over four years! It was no surprise when Skylor told the group he intends to major in English Composition. Want to join in the fun? UNAC will meet again on August 8 at 5:00 at the Lakewood Library. For the past two weeks, over 30 children learned how to be safe as well as have fun in the water, while getting great swimming instruction at Wheeler Lake. Tami Goetz, George Klumb, and Audra Demmith, along with several graduated students, and a few Lioness, taught children ages five and up to not only swim, but how to be safe in the water. The Speaker for the June meeting of the Nicolet AARP Chapter was attorney Bill Leege who talked to the group about legal issues, estate planning, elder law, and other issues of concern to the older adult. Mr. Leege who has spoken to the AARP group many times over the years always generates much discussion and answers many questions by members about these concerns. The speaker for the next meeting in July will be Ron Lange who will talk about his recent trip to Africa. Other events in July are the brat Fry fund raiser on July 14 at Super Valu; the trip to the Kids from Wisconsin on July 19; and the Nu Roc picnic on July 31. The annual AARP picnic will be at 12:00 PM on August 7 at the Mountain Community Center. This will be a pot luck event with brats and burgers provided. All persons 50 and over are invited to join the local AARP Chapter. AARP meetings are social, entertaining, and informative. National Guard and Reserve Mobilized as of June 15, 2012

This week the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force announced a decrease in activated reservists while the Coast Guard announced an increase. The net collective result is 1,727 fewer reservists activated in comparison to last week. At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. The total number currently on active duty from the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 46,474; Navy Reserve, 4,270; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 9,226; Marine Corps Reserve, 4,257, and the Coast Guard Reserve, 839. This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been activated to 65,066, including both units and individual augmentees.

Our speaker for the month was Kris Beisser Mathies, C.G. Kitty Werner, Pres. gave a report on the cemetery project of ways to clean stones with using shaving cream and soft brushes. Sharie Merline, Sec. read the minutes of the last meeting and Patty Swenty, Treas. Gave the treasurers report. Pres. Werner also attended the Gen-A-Rama that was held in Green Bay recently. It was well attended by many of the societies in the State. Thomas MacEntee was the main speaker. It was brought to our attention that there is a book out on, Here Comes The Mail A History of Kewaunee County Post Offices written by Kannerwurf, Patricia L. Sharpe, Virginia Feld Johnson Tony Brazeau donated a vast collection on CD. Beth Burke was suggested as a speaker in September. Kris gave an informative presentation on Sacramental records such as baptism, communion, confirmation, Marriage, church financial records, and funeral records. In confirmation records often a relative is the Sponsor. When looking for a German relative in a large city such as Milwaukee, it is recommended to look for the nearest German church that would be close to that relative, and search for records there. Also, other nationalities churches such as Polish, Irish, etc. Marriage records may be helpful, such as listing the city where the ancestor was born. Funeral records may have relatives names, and Parish Census records that were kept may give clues on their address, when they came here, birth info., wife or husbands name or parents names. If you sit for long periods of time at a desk or chair, here are some ideas to sneak in some exercise. Consider buying a MiniStepper. These give you a lowimpact aerobic workout. The Exercise Pedal is ideal for toning leg and arm muscles. Its a low-impact aerobic exerciser that stimulates circulation while toning leg/arm muscles. You pedal while sitting on a chair! Work out your arms by placing the unit on a table. The Mini Sit N Stroll Exerciser is another option to use while sitting. This is a very light workout for someone who just needs to keep circulation going while sitting for very long periods of time, and/or anyone who just has limited movement in their legs/ankles/feet. Ive never used this, but the ad says itll help increase blood circulation while seated on airplanes or in the office. Helps improve your lifestyle by allowing you to walk while being seated. Helps improve blood flow to legs. Accelerated venous, arterial and lymphatic flow. Reduced leg swelling. Relief from varicose veins and preventions of deep vein thrombosis. You can take it anywhere. The Pine Needle Quilters met June 16 with 34 members present and 2 guest. Jane of "Sew Much More" recently went to market and brought some items to show plus some quilts and table runners. Our quilt show at Suring High School was discussed. There will be a style show. Joan Hansen would like you to bring things to model, such as purses, jackets, and items made for children, and also looking for models, adults and children. She would like a description of items by our Sept meeting. Laurie Schoenebeck asked members to bring their Memory Christmas Challenge with explanations to her. There will be a "Boutique" at the quilt show, where you can sell your "new" items. Items you have made. You put your own code and price on them and the club will receive 15% of whatever you sell. Sheila Hixon can be contacted in regards to this and would like information by Sept. meeting. Items are needed for decorating for the show. Decorating of the bras were discussed, they will be judged at Sept meeting, and displayed at the quilt show. The theme for our quilt show Saturday, October 6th, from 10a.m.-4p.m. will be "Autumn Harvest". It is at Suring High School, 411 Algoma Street. For the August meeting Carol Renteria asked us to bring scissors, thread and needle for the program. Our regular meeting in August will be the 20th at 7p.m, and the sewing session August 6. Meetings are held at Breed town Hall and Community Center. New members welcome. Michael Perry and the Longbeds at the Oconto County Fair-The 6 Oconto County Libraries and their Friends of the Library groups are sponsoring Wisconsin Author Michael Perry and his band the Longbeds at the Oconto County Fair on Saturday, August 25 at noon. It will be great music for all ages. Brat ShackThe Friends of the Library will be fundraising at the Super Valu Brat Shack on Friday, August 24 from 10-2 Book Sale-The Friends of the Library will be having a book sale on Labor weekend-Friday, August 31- 2:00 to 8:00 Saturday, September 1- 9:00 to 2:00 Knitting Nights at the Library-Knitters of all skill levels are invited to Knitting Night at the Lakes Country Public Library in Lakewood. Experienced knitters can bring their projects to work on; beginners bring yarn and knitting needles and learn this exciting craft. Lieutenant Colonel Pete Tschohl was a guest speaker at the Wabeno Legion Sylvan Post #44 meeting on June 21. Petes father Ron is a member of the Post, and the Legion Auxiliary had sent Pete two We Care Packages while he was deployed to Kyrgyzstan in support of NATO troops fighting in Afghanistan. Lt. Col. Tschol has been with the Air Force for two decades and has successfully completed many missions. During his most recent deployment, Operation Enduring Freedom, he flew a KC135 refueling tanker. Pete expressed his appreciation to the ladies by sending a thank-you note containing his unit patch. So when he and his

family were visiting his father in mid-June, it provided a great opportunity for Legion and Auxiliary members to meet him. Pete addressed the group, telling of his many Air Force missions. He spoke in support of the war effort in Afghanistan and later showed beautiful slides of Kyrgyzstan to the Auxiliary. Pete is currently completing a tour at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas, where he was squadron commander. He will be relocating soon to his new station at Scott Air Force Base in St. Clair County, Illinois, where he will serve as Deputy Director of Operations. He and his wife Crystal have four children: Megan, Anja, Jackie and Jacob.

Proceeds from this very popular show support the McCaslin Lions Club local service activities such as support for the local food pantry, college scholarships to graduates of two area high schools, childrens Christmas party, a fishing outing for special needs children, support for several area youth sports organizations, Sheriffs K-9 program to name only a few. Wynne June Estreen, age 88, Seymour, formerly of Townsend, passed away at Shepherds Inn Assisted Living in Seymour on Wednesday, July 18, 2012. She was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on June 27, 1924 to the late John and Neilita (Pysher) Smith. Wynne worked at the Library in Lakewood until she was 86 years old and had to resign for health reasons. Wynne loved spending time with her grandchildren. She is a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend. Wynne is survived by her 3 sons, Jeffrey Todd Estreen (significant other Chris Juel) of New London, Gerry (Melissa) Estreen of Seymour, Gregg (Christine) Estreen of Pulaski; 2 sisters, Marette Tucker of Wabeno, Belva Tucker of Bowling Green, Kentucky; 7 grandchildren, Jessica, Eli, Cory, Ashley, Ashlynn, Taylor and Jacklyn. Wynne was preceded in death by her brother, Dan Smith. Family and friends may call at St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend on Monday, July 23, 2012 from 9:30 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM with Pastor Don Sprengler officiating. Private burial of the urn will be in Forrest Cemetery in Townsend. Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring assisting the family.
