Touted as the most diverse borough in Americas greatest city, Queens has so much more than diverse demographics. From the silver screen to the upper decks, there is no shortage of things to do in New York Citys outer reaches. This guide has been designed to provide residents and readers with direction on how to make the most of their community. If you havent experienced something new in Queens lately, you will find it within these pages. Along with our Guide to Queens staples essential services listings, firehouses, Y information, government contacts youll find expanded entries on venues where you can enjoy the grand culture that results from an amalgamation of more than two million people, each with a cultural heritage as unique as their community. It is duly important to recognize the

Simply Magnificent
impact these venues have on our local economies. From Queens Theatre in the Park to MOMA PS1, every institution in Queens has contributed to the boroughs vitality and identity. As we all manage through these gloomy economic times, an escape from an otherwise harsh reality is often offered by the arts. And, historically, in the most challenging of times, our theaters, galleries and cultural institutes are the places where emotional expression flourishes and can, in many ways, define an era. So enjoy these pages, save them, clip them out, hang them on the fridge and experience a side of Queens that is worth discovering. Colin DeVries Managing editor

Discover star-studded stages in Queens

From music to dance to theater, Queens entertainment offers an exciting, diversified and affordable experience for families, singles and children. Entertainment and cultural events in Queens generally feature two very enticing qualities: authenticity and affordability, said Seth Bornstein, the executive director of the Queens Economic Development Corporation. Whether its dance, theater, music, food, or even dragon races, the borough has the real deals. From the intimate to the supersized, Queens has it all. One of the most legendary Queens performances featured The Beatles at Shea Stadium home of the New York Mets at the height of Beatlemania in August 1965, bringing more than 55,000 people to see the show. Now Citi Field new home of the Mets in Flushing, has featured shows by Paul McCartney in 2009 and the Dave Matthews Band. In March, near the stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens Theatre in the Park presented the St. Petersburg Classic Ballet Theatre from Russia. Dancers graced the stage with group works, solos and pas de deux from classic ballets. Upcoming performances at Queens Theatre S Wonderful: All singing, all dancing celebration of George & Ira Gershwin: Nov. 3-13 Melissa Manchester: Nov.

Queens has long, rich film history

Movies produced in borough provide economic, cultural boom
BY TAmmY ScilEppi
Queens, which has a long and glorious film history, is one of the most desired and diverse filming locations in the country. It was very popular with 1920s film stars like Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Harry Houdini. The Long Island Rail Road made travel to Queens studios convenient. The appeal of shooting films in Queens was based on the economics of studio production, especially location. Paramount put their East Coast studio in Astoria in 1920 because a new subway line linked it to Times Square, said former Museum of the Moving Image film Curator Richard Koszarski. Similar economic arguments hold true today. Since 1920, Kaufman Astoria Studios has become a cultural hub a home to movie and TV productions like Nurse Jackie, Eat, Pray, Love, The Smurfs Movie, Sesame Street, and the recently wrapped Men in Black III. Silvercup Studios in Long Island City, where HBOs Sex and the City was filmed, is the largest production facility in New York City. A sampling of notable films shot in Queens: The Wrong Man Dir. Alfred Hitchcock. Starring Henry Fonda, Vera Miles, Anthony Quayle Based on a true story, this film noirs location shots were captured where the actual events took place in Jackson Heights. Prison scenes were filmed in City Prison in Long Island City today known as Queensboro Correctional, 4704 Van Dam St. A pivA Bronx Tale Dir. Robert De Niro. Starring Robert De Niro, Chazz Palminteri Filmed entirely in Astoria and Jackson Heights, street signs were changed to make it look like the Bronx in the 50s. Some scenes were shot at Kaufman-Astoria Studios. The high school featured is William Cullen Bryant on 31st Avenue in Long Island City. The church is St. Josephs on 30th Avenue, where funeral parlor scenes were shot in a funeral home. A bar on 45th Street in Astoria was used as the model for the Chez Bippy Bar in the movie (built in an old bakery called Benkerts). Distributed by Savoy Pictures, 1993. The Wiz Dir. Sidney Lumet. Starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell Adapted from the 1975 musical, it was filmed at Kaufman Astoria Studios. The decaying New York State Pavilion from the 1964 Worlds Fair was used as the set for Munchkinland. Other scenes were shot at Shea Stadium and Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Distributed by Universal Pictures, 1978. Before the Devil Knows Youre Dead Dir. Sidney Lumet. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei, Albert Finney Filming of the gripping robbery scene took place in a jewelry store at the Bay Terrace Shopping Center in Bayside. Other scenes were shot in Douglaston and Hell Gate Studios in Astoria. Distributed by THINKfilm, 2007.

Guide to Queens timesLedGer, FaLL/Winter 2011

TipS fOR EmERgENcY pREpAREDNESS

Queens residents face many forms of disasters. Whether they be an earthquake, hurricane, a snowmageddon or a tornado, its important to be ready when they strike. To avoid injury or worse there are simple steps families can take now to prepare for the worst. Here are some tips offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

1) prepare a kit.
Put together a collection of critical basics, such as water, nonperishable and easy-toprepare food, flashlights, batteries, batterypowered or hand-crank radio, first-aid kit, medications, multipurpose tool, sanitary and hygiene items, copies of personal documents, cell phone with charges, emergency contact information and cash.

2) make a plan.
Develop a family disaster plan and practice it. Contact your local American Red Cross chapter and find out what disasters are most likely to happen and how to prepare for them. Ask about animal care and how to care for elderly or disabled. Develop an evacuation plan and pick two places to meet, one outside your home and one outside your neighborhood in case you cant return home. Practice this plan with your family.

3) Stay informed.
Learn how to shelter in place in your home, vehicle, work or in-between, in case chemical or radiological containments are released. Choose a large room with water supply that can be sealed off at home. Develop a sheltering plan at work and put together a kit. Learn CPR, first aid and how to use an automated external defibrillator. More detailed information on how best to prepare for an emergency can be found at emergency.cdc.gov/preparedness/shelter.

Divorce Caribbean Style

For a growing number of New Yorkers, tired of the delays and expense of conventional local divorces, fast, inexpensive Caribbean and offshore US divorces have been the answer. A leader in the fast divorce business has been Divorcefast.com of Massachusetts, a company that has been providing speedy, low-cost foreign divorces for 50 years. The company provides divorces that can be completed in as little as one day in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the US offshore island of Guam. According to Alan Alford, proprietor of Divorce.com, some of the divorces offered require travel to the court, while some can be done without any travel or court appearance. Some require both parties to sign the court petition for divorce, while others can be achieved with only one party signing. All of the divorces happen very quickly and with a minimum amount of paperwork. The divorces are valid and recognized everywhere, and Alford reports that he processes several thousand of them every year, particularly for New Yorkers. The total cost for fast divorces starts at $895, with other options raising the price to as high as $1,500. All of the divorces, Alford says, are completed within a few days and the clients are then free to remarry or otherwise continue with their lives as single persons. Anyone interested in more details about the Divorcefast offerings should access the company website: www.divorcefast.com The forms and instructions are printed out from there and submitted to the company. For those lacking Internet access Alford and his staff are prepared to discuss foreign divorces on the phone, or by mail.

Hours: Monday to Wednesday, 9 am to 9 pm Thursday and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm 718-896-9090 COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES Sometimes family members who are caring for a frail or disabled person would like a chance to get away for several hours or days. This relief from their caregiving responsibilities can be arranged through respite services. A trained volunteer or paid worker can stay with the frail person overnight, up to a maximum of several weeks. Respite care also provides support groups, counseling, and training for family members. Some respite programs also offer a Respite center to which a frail person can move for a while. Sometimes this enables caregivers to take a vacation or a trip. Two respite options are available to some Queens residents: RBSCC, Inc.
