EASTSIDE NEWS

NEWSBRIEF
Drivers warned of winter sun
EASTSIDE motorists have been warned to be on their guard after the low winter sun sparked a series of minor bumps and scrapes. Police were called to two collisions in the space of half an hour on Monday morning, one involving eight vehicles close to the Bannockburn interchange. Inspector Graeme Allan, of the forces Road Policing Unit, said: It is important drivers keep their distance, adjust their speed accordingly and ensure their windscreens are clean. The sun is low at this time of year and can blind drivers, especially if they are heading east. The first accident reported happened around 8am when a motorist braked and the car skidded into the central reservation on the M9 eastbound between junctions 5 and 4. Twenty minutes later officers were called out after an eight-vehicle shunt on the M9 near the Bannockburn interchange. Inspector Allan said: Thankfully, there were no major injuries and one woman was taken by ambulance to Stirling Royal Infirmary for whiplash.

Airth danger opencast coal site is an accident waiting to happen

by LYNNE McILROY

AN abandoned opencast coal site on the outskirts of Airth is an accident waiting to happen, according to a concerned local resident.
The worried lady, who did not want to be named, said after the recent spell of wet weather the pit at Waterslap had filled with water. She said: With all the rain weve had over the past couple of days the redundant open cast is now lying flooded. Its been like that for at least 10 years now and every winter Ive said weve been lucky in so much as a bairn hasnt drowned in it. Its filled with water and as the weather gets colder its likely to ice over which is going to be a magnet to some children. You know what kids are like. Parents can tell them to stay away but whos to say thats going to stop them. She added: Trying to get it sorted is like flogging a dead horse. Its a joke. Im just really glad there hasnt been an incident or a fatality. Airth community council convener Robert Smith said the opencast has been an on-going saga for about 15 years.

DANGER SITE: The opencast coal site at Waterslap lies flooded after recent heavy rain.

He said when the company who originally owned the land had gone into liquidation, a 250,000 bond to reinstate the site as agricultural land was insufficient. As a result it was only partially refilled. He said the current landowner had to fight to get it back in his ownership, with the previous owners using it as leverage in a planning battle for a second site. Mr Smith said it was his belief that the landowner had hoped to acquire leftover materials from the building of the Clackmannanshire Bridge to fill in the opencast. The land is now in the hands of the farmer and hes keen to get something done with it, he said. After 11 or 12 years with no use, now hes the landowner it will be his intention to turn it back into useable land. Acknowledging the potential danger, he added: The burn at Waterslap Farm is probably more of a danger. Kids should be excluded from the place. I would like to issue an open warning to ensure children keep away from the area and the Pow Burn. There is the potential for danger, particularly after winter flooding.
