The Watchword
The Salvation Army Womens Auxiliary of Washington, D.C.
CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Thursday, January 19 Board Meeting 350 River Bend Road Great Falls, VA 22066 703-759-0196 1 p.m. Dear Ladies, Happy New Year to you! The Auxiliary Schedule in the year ahead will provide you with many opportunities to enjoy fellowship while doing good works. Please dont wait to be asked! If you want to participate in an upcoming event and join the fun by lending a hand, let us know! May you and your loved ones be blessed with good health and cheer the entire coming year! -Jose Cox The Salvation Army Womens Auxiliary of Washington D.C. - Emerita Awardees
The SAWA board unanimously voted to present Ruth Donaldson and Maribelle Moore with the Emerita Award for their long service to the Auxiliary. At the Christmas Luncheon they each received a framed certificate, a crystal bell engraved with their names and they will be guests at our annual Christmas Luncheons for the rest of their lives. We are honored to have them in our Membership. Maribelle Moore learned parliamentary procedure in the 4th grade and the Auxiliary along with various other organizations to which she belongs like Capital Speakers Club and Welcome to Washington, have benefitted from her knowledge. She was an English, Music and Business Major at East Carolina and her skills have served the Auxiliary well for over three decades. Maribelle has organized Garden Parties, raised funds and edited THE WATCHWORD for many years as well as serving as Auxiliary President in 1998-99 while working full time! Volunteering is a family affair for Maribelle as her late husband and five children have all pitched in to assist her and the Auxiliary when needed. Maribelle is so dedicated that she was found sleeping on a couch in the foyer of the Salvation Army office after a very late night of writing THE WATCHWORD! Years ago, on a SAWA bus trip to Camp Happyland, Maribelle wore a large funny hat and recounted a story about a minister at a local church where she played the organ. After the donation plate was passed, the money was immediately counted and the minister announced that it was not enough. He told the congregation that he knew where they had been Saturday night and how much they spent so they better dig deeper into their pockets and refill the plate as it was passed again! So, Maribelle took off her funny hat and passed it around the bus to collect donations for Camp Happyland. After a count, she admonished the members to dig deeper and the hat came around again much to the surprise and laughter of the ladies on the bus. Maribelle serves the Auxiliary as Parliamentarian, Bylaw Committee Chair and Grammatical Watchdog for THE WATCHWORD! Ruth Donaldson has been an active member of the Auxiliary for over 30 years. Ruth is a legacy member as well since her mother-in- law joined the Auxiliary shortly after it was founded in 1948. Ruth attended the often talked about Garden Parties as her guest long before she joined in the 1980s. She especially recalls Auxiliary Garden Parties held at the embassies of the Soviet Union, Italy, New Zealand and South Africa. Bazaars were held at the Garden Parties to raise money for Camp Happyland. Born in South Carolina, Ruth moved to Washington and took courses at American University and Strayer College. She began her career in 1946 working directly for three different Chiefs of Protocol serving both the Truman and the Eisenhower administrations. She witnessed many changes through the years and has met or attended receptions with dignitaries from all over the world. Ruths calligraphic skills were put to use addressing President Eisenhowers Christmas cards! Ruth resigned from her career to raise her two sons and since then has served not only our Auxiliary, but also many other Washington organizations as protocol adviser. She is the Honorary Chair of the Protocol Committee for The Auxiliary. Ruth resides in Chevy Chase and continues to be an active member of The Salvation Army Womens Auxiliary, The Capital Speakers Club and Welcome to Washington.

Christmas Luncheon 2011 Unlacing the Victorian Woman

January / February 2012

Dear Christmas Angels, You ARE The MOST Generous Women I know and I do know this because I delivered forty-five bags, plus several large boxes filled with gifts for our thirty little ones, who could only dream of such a Christmas, except through your generosity. Their dreams became a reality on Christmas Morning and I know they all believe in the Miracle of Christmas now! So, dear friends, I hope you will take a moment before the New Year takes over our busy lives and reflect on just how amazing you really are! Because you took your most precious commodity, your TIME, and shopped, wrapped and delivered to me gifts you purchased for a child you may never meet and because of you, these children had the most glorious Christmas of their lives. I hope someday they will be able to pass on your generosity to someone else in need of a hand up!! Thank you to the following Christmas Angels: Rose Berger and Josee Cox; Sats Young; Marilyn Rose; Dottie Mergner; Ursula Spell; Susan Long; Paula Hisaoka; Claudia and Mickey Fox; Debra Latioalais: Diane Morales; Rosemary Laphen; Nancy and Jim Pittman; Carmen Powell and team Veritiss; Carol Ferrara and the Ferrara family; Patty Hancock; Nancy Keefe and her Grandchildren; Karen Meyers; Gina Gyuricza and Martha Bilodeau; Sue Falk; Marel Brady; Carolyn and Patricia Calkins; Doggett Parking Garages;

In recent months The Salvation Army has been blessed by receiving planned gifts and bequests to help financially support The Salvation Army Programs within the greater Washington region. In my experience, the more specifically the gift is defined the more accessible the funds are to be used precisely as originally intended by the donor. I want to thank those Women's Auxiliary members and friends who have chosen to lend their financial support to many programs . . . countless lives are affected, thanks to that generosity. If you have an interest in establishing a planned gift, gift annuity or any other gift designed to help support the Women's Auxiliary, please be in contact with our specialist, Bob Milton at our office by dialing 202-756-2632. May God richly bless you this New Year as your lives continue to serve as blessing to so many . . . -Major Steve Morris, Area Commander Dear Ladies,

January / February 2012

As the first snow quietly fell this afternoon and covered everything with a clean, white blanket of purity, I found myself wanting to hold onto this perfect picture for as long as possible. Reality set in quickly as I had to run errands during the evening, passing a fender bender on the side of the road, stepping down into a big puddle of already melted snow and having to pull my jacket around my neck when the temperatures plummeted as the sun disappeared. What a perfect comparison to the beginning of a new year! We turn over the first page of a new calendar feeling like the world is ours, sure that we can conquer that diet, run that first 5K or heal that broken relationship.....only to find that during week two, we're back to our "same old ways." Let me encourage all of us to greet each new morning with the genuine excitement of unwrapping the beautifully wrapped gift of a new day, not focusing on the past, but on what is yet to come! Paul said it best in Philippians 3:13, "I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead!" Be assured I am looking forward to all 2012 has for us as we work together for the benefit of our community and to the glory of God! In the love of Jesus,
