All of Us - #564 by Fr. Larry I know of a few families that have adopted strict ground rules for what are, and what are not, permissible topics for conversations when their relatives and guests come over for dinner. Because of a history of heated debates that have almost led to nasty food fights at the holiday table, these folks are no longer allowed to talk about religion or politics. I guess this is one way of keeping things civil with your relatives during the holidays. Two national conventions have taken place as we move closer to the November election. After Labor Day, the campaigns of the politicians will intensify as they get their individual messages out to voters. I recently came across an article written by Father Lou Cameli, who is a priest and theologian for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He taught me when I attended Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelien Seminary. Appointed by Cardinal George as the Archdiocese's Delegate for Formation and Mission, he now serves as a resource theologian to the agencies of the pastoral center. His article is entitled, "Taking Another Look at the Church and Politics." I would like to share the following insightful excerpts. Introduction Is the Catholic Church too political? Or, is it not political enough? What exactly is the relationship between the Church and politics? If Catholics depend upon ordinary print and broadcast media for their information, they will not have a complete or accurate take on this important relationship. On the other hand, official church documents can be daunting to comprehend and digest. Besides the difficulty of getting accurate information, there are other important and practical complications. Many Catholics, even very traditional ones, have a very negative reaction to any hint that someone, including a bishop or a group of bishops, is going to tell them how to vote. American Catholics are very American in their sense of independence as citizens and as participants in the democratic process.

Tensions between religion and politics will probably mount with an approaching presidential election. They have already escalated with the recent Health and Human Services mandate for so-called "reproductive health services" attached to insurance plans of the new health care bill. In this swirl of theoretical and practical issues, we do well to step back and identify a few simple principles and facts. Is there a Catholic vote? Pollsters and sociologists like to identify "the Catholic vote." In fact, there is no shared or prescribed Catholic vote for a specific candidate. There is however, a Catholic vision of the world rooted in faith, a vision that shapes or ought to shape how Catholics participate in a democracy as citizens and public servants. The heart of that vision centers on the God-given dignity of each individual, our connection or solidarity with each other, and our shared commitment to fostering life, justice, peace and reconciliation among all people. The Catholic vision of humanity is especially sensitive to those who are vulnerable, marginalized and neglected. The Catholic vision often appears contrary to many currents of contemporary culture because it assumes the great dignity and high destiny of all human beings from conception to natural death. The Catholic vision is different because it looks at the world critically both through the lens of faith and the lens of reason. How is the Catholic voice frequently and incorrectly perceived in the public forum? There are at least four significant misperceptions of how Catholic social teaching relates to public and political life in the United States. The first misperception suggests that the Church, speaking through the bishops, is trying to impose a program or exercise social control on other citizens. The second misperception sees in the bishops and their social teachings nothing more than institutional self-interest riding roughshod over other citizens. A third misperception identifies the bishops and the Catholic Church more generally as a special interest group that is seeking to profit from special protections and favorable conditions at a political and economic cost to other citizens. A final misperception identifies the Catholic Church and her leadership as attempting to

Page Three

claim exceptional or selective status in the nation, again at a cost to other citizens. These misperceptions are often embedded in the public discourse found in print and electronic media. They must be identified as misperceptions. They do not match the history of the participation of American Catholics in civic life nor Catholics' aspirations to contribute to our nation in the future. Far from being competitors with the interests of other citizens, American Catholics have contributed significant social and economic capital to the United States, especially through church institutions dedicated to education, health care and social services. Interestingly, in the current debates and commentaries, no one mentions these positive contributions which have made a great difference in our overall quality of life. Is there some follow-up for these reflections? A good follow-up would be the United States Bishops' document Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. (Available at http://www.usccb.org/issuesand-action/faithful-citizenship/forming-consciences-forfaithful-citizenship-document.cfm.)

Religious Education News

By: Trish Nickleski, C.R.E. Welcome Back! The summer is truly over. Everyone is back in school and Religious Education Classes begin this week. We are looking forward to entering another year in our journey of faith! I would like to thank everyone who came forward and offered to volunteer in our program over the summer. SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish is truly blessed to have so many people willing to share their faith with the young people of our parish on a weekly basis. Next weekend we will recognize all the catechists along with the school teachers and polish school teachers at the noon Mass in honor of Catechetical Sunday. Please remember all of these educators in your prayers as they begin the new school year with the children of our parish. Religious Education registration information for the 2012/2013 school year: Any new families wishing to register for Religious Education classes MUST do so NOW! Classes are beginning and your child will be missing valuable class time if they do not start as soon as possible. If you are a new family and wish to register please call my office at (630) 257-9314 for more information on registration.

The Religious Education Program is in need of volunteers for the 2012/2013 school year. Catechists need to be 18 years old and catechist aides must be in high school. All adult volunteers must go through a background check and attend the Protecting Gods Children Workshop. The following positions are open: Wednesday Session: 5:30 until 7:00 pm Catechist for 2nd grade Catechist Aide for 3rd grade I NEED YOUR HELP!! Please consider sharing your faith with the young people of our parish! If you are interested in volunteering please give our office a call at (630) 257-9314. Our parish welcomes people with a developmental or intellectual challenge, down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders or learning problems. They can benefit from a program called SPRED which has existed in the Archdiocese since 1967 and is in 156 parishes. We need your help. Parents and interested people are invited to a SPRED Informational Gathering on Monday, September 17th at 7 PM in our schools teachers lounge. SPRED is a wonderful small faith sharing program. Please consider this ministry! Guadalupe, Anita, Richard and Marianna have said, Yes! We need four more adult volunteers! We also want to know the parents of a child, teenager, young adult or adult with special needs no matter their limitations or abilities. Lemont Parishes ProLife Ministry

Reminder About Background Checks and Protecting Gods Children Workshops Please remember that the Archdiocese of Chicago is requiring all volunteers who work with children in our parish, parish school, school sports program and religious education program to go through a background check and attend the Protecting Gods Children workshop. The background check and the workshop are two separate things and are found at two different websites. Several of these workshops are being held at nearby parishes over the summer and in the fall. The dates and times are listed below. Please remember that you need to register online at www.virtus.org before attending the workshop. If you cannot make one of these workshops then you will need to go to a different parish than the ones listed below to attend the workshop. A complete listing of the different sites for these workshops can be found at the VIRTUS website. If you have any questions or would like a packet of information to help you register for the background check and the workshop please call Trish Nickleski at 630-257-9314. marry Catholics want to share not only their lives and values, but also their faith.
i Young parents who are expecting

their first born or have children starting school often find that this is the time to join a faith community that will help them find God in their lives and establish moral values in their family.
i People who are baptized either in the Catholic faith or

another Christian religion, but were not brought up or educated in the religion. As the years go by, they may seek to return to their Christian roots.
i People from all backgrounds that are seeking God in

their liveslooking for answers to life and death questions. The Catholic Church offers great traditions of Scripture, the worship of God in vibrant liturgies, intellectual studies of theology, joyful celebrations through the Sacraments, care for the sick and the dying and love and hope for the poor of the world. How Does a Person Become Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process by which the Catholic Church welcomes new members into its communal life. The RCIA is a living experience of the Church, and not just a series of classes which teach knowledge about the Church. Although there is instruction in the facts of the faith, instruction is but one part of a larger experience of knowing and sharing with other members of the Church. Who is RCIA for? It is for non-Christian men and women; for Christians that are not Catholic; for Catholics who are baptized, but have no religious training. How Can I Join? The Catholic churches in Lemont work together in this experience. Contact Fr. Larry or Doreen at (630) 2572414 and watch the bulletins for further details. New Group Now Forming for Fall

Youth Ministry How Do I Join ?

We will begin a new year of Tri-Parish Youth Ministry next month. Many new high school teens have been asking how they can join. The process is very simple. You can email me at lemontyouthm@sbcglobal.net and I will put you on the email list and inform you of coming events. I will also send flyers to your home address a week before the event. We have many great things planned for the coming year. Our formal meetings are on Sunday nights at 6:00 PM in St Pats parish center. We are a fun and welcoming group. Many teens have made life-long friends of the teens they have met in youth ministry. It is a great way to stay connected to your faith and church as well as meet some really great kids.
