INTRODUCTION
1 HISTORY
Plastic is a vast topic to discus on and as its demand is increasing in the consumer market as well as in the manufacturing market both directly and indirectly, it is a product worth understanding. Oil and natural gas are the major raw materials used to manufacture plastics. The plastics production process begins by heating components of crude oil or natural gas in a "cracking process." This process results in the conversion of these components into hydrocarbon monomers such as ethylene and propylene. These monomers are then chemically bonded into chains called polymers. The different combinations of monomers yield plastics with a wide range of properties and characteristics. Even though the basic makeup of many plastics is carbon and hydrogen, other elements can also be involved. Oxygen, chlorine, fluorine and nitrogen are also found in the molecular makeup of many plastics. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) contains chlorine. Nylon contains nitrogen. Teflon contains fluorine. Polyester and polycarbonates contain oxygen. Plastics are divided into two distinct groups: thermoplastics and thermo sets. The majority of plastics are thermoplastic, meaning that once the plastic is formed it can be heated and reformed repeatedly. This property allows for easy processing and facilitates recycling. The other group, the thermo sets, can not be remelted. Once these plastics are formed, reheating will cause the material to decompose rather than melt.

1:IDENTIFICATION & DESCRIPTOIN OF THE COMPANY

There are approximately about 70,367 types of plastic materials available globally. In Pakistan the production of plastic commodities is only around .05 % of 70,367 plastic items, out of which HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene), LDPE (Low Density Poly Ethylene), PP (Poly Propylene), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), and PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) are the prominent ones. These materials are individually rated in accordance to there categorization of petroleum wastes. At the moment in international market PET, HDPE and PVC are considered economically viable for recycling as they are not harmful unlike PP which is harmful for recycling because of some ethical concerns. The rating for PET is , for HDPE is , for PVC is

, for LDPE is and for PP is . These ratings belong to SPI Resin Identification Coding System developed by Society of the Plastics Industry in 1988. Plastics are materials with a seemingly limitless range of characteristics and they have many inherent properties each plastic has very distinct characteristics, but most plastics have the following general attributes. Plastics can be very resistant to chemicals. Consider all the cleaning fluids in our homes that are packaged in plastic. The warning labels describing what happens when the chemical comes into contact with skin or eyes or is ingested, emphasizes the chemical resistance of these materials. Plastics can be both thermal and electrical insulators. Consider all the electrical appliances, cords, outlets and wiring that are made or covered with plastics. Thermal resistance is evident in the kitchen with plastic pot and pan handles, coffee pot handles, the foam core of refrigerators and freezers, insulated cups, coolers and microwave cookware. The thermal underwear that many skiers wear is made of polypropylene and the fiber fill in many winter jackets is acrylic. Generally, plastics are very light in weight with varying degrees of strength. Consider the range of applications, from toys to the frame structure of space stations, to Kevlar, which is used in bullet proof vests. Plastics can be moulded into bottles or components of cars, such as dashboards and fenders. Some plastics stretch and are very flexible. Other plastics, such as polystyrene and polyurethane, can be foamed.

Activity:
Now that you have learned some information about plastic it would be easier to understand about the activity that we have considered for investing in is related to High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE). It is made from petroleum, it takes 1.75 kgs of petroleum (in terms of energy and raw materials) to make 1 kg of HDPE. High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) has many applications such as, containers, laundry detergent bottles, milk jugs, fuel tanks for vehicles, plastic bags, containment of certain chemicals (drums), natural gas distribution system, water pipes for domestic water supply, shampoo bottles, etc. The interesting part of this activity is that these items are created from HDPE and can be recycled and reprocessed for a certain amount of time, so this means the availability of raw material is on large scale.

SECTOR ANALYSIS
In this part of the report we will be analysing the plastic industry as a whole. At present plastics of various kinds are very important engineering materials and are used for numerous structural parts in many lines of manufacturing. Export of plastic material increased from Rs. 6.9 billion in 2003-2004 to Rs. 9.0 billion in 2004-2005 thus showing an increase of 30 %. This progress has been made possible due to simplified tax policy on domestic production and decrease in import tariff on the raw material used in plastic manufacturing industry. Plastic industry is split in two sectors i.e. organized and unorganized. Organized sector produces quality products, which are of international standard and are quite expensive. Unorganized sector is capable of producing low quality and relatively cheap products. During the last decade the unorganized sector has grown much more than the organized sector. At present, there are about 600-700 medium sized and over 5,500 small scale plastic processing units in Faisalabad, Hattar, Gadoon and Multan. Production of plastic materials increased from Rs. 1.30 billion in 19861987 to Rs. 21 billion in 2004-2005. The plastic industry in Pakistan is growing at an average annual rate of 15 percent. The industry is contributing more than Rs. 7.5 billion annually to the national exchequer in shape of custom duty, sales tax and income tax. Its contribution to the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) was 1.69 percent. Pakistan exports plastic in two forms i.e. plastic materials and plastic processed goods. Export of plastic materials from Pakistan increased from 53,270 tonnes worth Rs. 2.22 million in 2001-2002 to 147,453 tonnes worth 9 million in 2004-2005, while exports of plastic goods increased from 5,740 tonnes in 2003-2004 to 29,058 tonnes in 2004-2005. On the other hand imports of plastic materials increased from 418,410 tonnes worth Rs. 20.74 million in 2000-2001 to 702,855 tonnes worth Rs. 45.93 million in 2004-2005. Plastic manufacturing units in Pakistan consume plastic materials exceeding 450,000 tonnes, averaging 2,2 kg per person of plastic products a year. Almost all the machinery used in production of various types of plastics are imported. Plastic has visibly replaced most of the metal and is being used even in the furniture industry and construction sector and packaging industry. Due to the rising demand and new uses in areas like agriculture, electronics, automobiles, automation, packaging and household goods, the development of plastic industry requires special attention because it has certain advantages over other industries.
