Clinton sacks travel office staff

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The FBI will investigate the handling of funds in the White House travel office after the discovery that a lot of money cannot be properly accounted for, an official said today. The entire seven-man staff of the travel office was abruptly fired on Wednesday, ordered out of their jobs by the' end of the day. A 25-year-old cousin to President Clinton was named to oversee the day-to-day opera tions of the office. The fired employees were ac cused of shoddy accounting prac tices, mismanagement and pos sible overbilling. However, White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers acknowledged today that it was "impossible to know for sure" if there actually were any overcharges.

Briefly
billion, a final decision may be made soon on the future of America's space station. One thing is sure: It won't be the grand laboratory in space that Ronald Reagan envisioned. If there is a station and that's by no means certain the National Aeronautics -and Space Administration must set tle on a new and much cheaper design, then get it approved by a reluctant president, a hostile Congress and an irritated group of international partners. NASA is nearing a June 7 deadline, ordered by President Clinton, to produce a station design that cuts construction costs in half. Charles Vest, pres ident of MIT, was expected at the White House today to give officials a closed-door status briefing.

WASHINGTON - A group of Iraqis jailed in Kuwait have told U.S. investigators they were, in fact, sent by Iraq to kill President Bush during his visit to Kuwait last month, a U.S. official says. The White House said earlier this month that it would con sider action against Iraq if it finds proof of its complicity in an assassination attempt. Iraq has denied any role in the al leged plot, accusing the United States of fabricating the inci dent as an excuse to attack Iraqi targets. Kuwait arrested 11 Iraqis after they drove in from Iraqi on April 13, and said the suspects planned to attack targets in Kuwait including Bush during his April 14-16 visit. Bush led the allies against Iraq in the Persian Gulf War. The main Iraqi suspect, Wali al-Ghazali, told a team of FBI and Secret Service agents in Kuwait that he planned to strap explosives around his waist and blow himself up next to Bush in a suicide bombing, said the of ficial, who spoke late Wednes day on condition of anonymity.
