Introduction
Indian education sector is considered to be recession proof primarily due to the willingness among consumers to spend on this sector. Across the board, from the upper classes to the bottom most stratum of the social hierarchy, expenditure on, boasts of high profit margins. Due to the changing economic scenario, need for extra and supplemental education is urgently felt by both students and their parents. Known as the world of shadow of education, coaching classes have grown phenomenally in India and is only education accounts for a sizable portion of family incomes. Coaching classes segment, though unorganized and unregulated to proliferate further in future An analysis of the drivers explains the factors for growth of the market and includes expenditure on education, lucrative business opportunity, rise in number of students opting for foreign education, working parents with higher disposable income, Right to Education Act and infrastructural bottlenecks in formal education. As education in India is considered to be the only means towards betterment of ones social status; spending on education has never taken a hit even in times of recession. Parents indulge in spending almost an equal amount of primary school fees in coaching classes to further their kids exposure and grooming. Owing to the absence of Government regulations, a successful coaching institute can hike program fees thus making it extremely lucrative from a business perspective. Increase in number of students opting for foreign education has also led to enhanced demand for these classes.

With rising number of students looking at foreign shores for higher education, cracking entrance tests at such universities translate into rising demand for coaching institutes. Further, Right to Education Act forbids teachers of Government schools from taking private tuitions which creates room for coaching institutes to capitalize upon. Another factor that has led to the growth of this sections that of high incidence of working parents in a family. With both parents working, family income rises and increases the probability of education expenditure. Finally, the infrastructural bottlenecks in the formal education system with absence of quality teachers and proper syllabi will boost the

coaching classes market. However, the sector is also facing certain challenges. Factors such as change in examination format are an impediment for this sector. The major trends identified include online tutorial increasing base, coaching classes for beginners, coaching institutes foraying into formal education system, franchising mode of operation, introduction of package courses and increased PE activity. It is unregulated, unorganized, and its profits can be the envy of some of the best and the biggest business houses in the country. And though it does not officially bear the tag of an industry, its growth, even during times of recession, can make the most pampered sectors in the corporate sector see green. There are no official estimates, but insiders say the total revenue in their business is close to Rs 10,000 crore which, incidentally, is only for class room coaching; home and online tutoring is said to be worth another Rs 20,000 crore. This is the world of shadow education in India a segment thats emerging stronger and larger with every passing year.

Cause & effects

In a race to excel more than most of ones competitors, coaching classes along with other institutions have become a resort for the betterment of students academic

performances. In a world where students commit suicide for not having scored a few marks more, high school and college-going students attending these classes has now become routine. According to a study undertaken by Stanford University, college student coaching improves retention and graduation rates. True, the approach in these classes is centered towards marks and better academic performance. But it is our education system which is to blame since it weighs the students standings on the brilliance of his score-card. Practical exams in science are given a sufficiently low weight age as compared to theory which, though humongous in its extent can be managed due to assistance in rote learning given by the classes the students attend. In coaching classes for high schools, students are literally made to write formulae, theorems many times (which they just copy from textbooks or additional notes) before an actual test is taken on that topic. Many times, students are encouraged to accept things as given in the textbooks without arguments or doubts that may arise out of inquisitiveness. Hammering of the matter into the students heads by means of continuous reiteration in written or oral form has become the way most coaching classes function today. Mathematical magic tricks are taught without the students actually understanding the reasons behind why things happen the way they do magically! Professors in these classes teach a single concept in many different classes. Hence they virtually have it at the tips of

their tongues. Repetition of the same concept in the nth class having more or less the same kind of students requires no genius. Yet, they represent youth, liveliness and energy since most of them are recent graduates. Students admire them even beyond their academic. It is a well known fact that girls tend to develop obsessions and crushes on young and suave professors and dont hesitate to stalk them outside classes and crave to peep into their non-professional lives. Does XYZ sir have a girlfriend? If yes, Oh, NO! My prospects look bleak now *disheartened giggling*. A few successful attempts to acquire their favorite professors email IDs and phone numbers, and these girls start falling into teenage loveydovey illusions. In case, the teacher is sensible, he might ignore the girl for good. But there have been many cases wherein they have taken undue advantage of girls who are foolish enough to happily set a trap for themselves. Hiranand Achhara, a professor at a coaching class said, It is not the fault of the institution if such situations arise. Parents must warn their kids not to get involved in such matters and that they must maintain a strictly professional connection with the classes. On the lines of the typical chicken and egg syndrome, coaching classes have given rise to a controversy on whether the coaching classes have arisen due to inefficiency of the teachers at schools or vice versa i.e. the schools have started getting increasingly inefficient with the encroachment of coaching classes on their space. All kinds of teachers have existed in schools those who do not

handle their assignments well enough, along with the better ones. They charge higher for helping their students get higher marks. Anyhow, we can agree that they are a byproduct of capitalism and those enrolling for them must try to make the most out of them as aware customers and those not doing so must learn to do without them! Individuals are not to take decisions as a herd, but as per their individual needs.

ADVANTAGES & DISVANTAGES

Academic coaching classes are becoming more and more popular as the schooling system becomes increasingly competitive. Parents desperate to get their children into good quality schools will go to great lengths to help them pass entrance exams and excelling interviews. However, it is unclear how effective coaching classes really are. Here are some advantages & disadvantages regarding coaching classes: Advantages in the classroom. This means alternative approaches to

learning that could be more suitable to your child are made available. Various teaching methods can be beneficial to different children; if your child is being exposed to two kinds, there is a very good chance one will be effective for them. individual tuition at coaching classes, meaning teaching is catered to their abilities more directly. If your child does not receive one-on-one tuition in coaching classes, they will at the very least be in very small classes. They will have a learning plan tailored to their needs, allowing them to succeed at an increased pace. entrance exams. This gives your child a head start in the admissions process, placing them above candidates that have not had coaching classes. Therefore they are more likely to gain a place.
