Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Why do we talk in church before and after Mass?

There have been comments on both sides of this issue. Some people are very appreciative of the fact that people are not carrying on conversations inside the church where we worship. The atmosphere of quiet helps them to pray by spending these few moments of the week in quiet prayer before and after Mass. Other people want to be able to greet those around them, or say hello to those they know, and maybe have a conversation about the past week. Some of these people feel like the atmosphere of quiet makes the church cold and unfriendly, and we all know that Christ does not call us to be cold and unfriendly toward each other. Let us acknowledge this point first: whatever has been said or you may have heard in the past, there is no rule about "talking in church at Christ the King. Secondly: we encourage you to be respectful of your fellow parishioners and the sacred space in which we worship together our heavenly Father. Thirdly: we encourage you to use the narthex as well as the plaza by the bell tower of the church for as much visiting, socializing, and talking as you would like. We hope this clarification helps us to grow as a parish in the love of Christ.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
St. James teaches that those who are poor in the eyes of society are the ones who have been chosen to inherit the Kingdom of God. Indeed, we are saved because of our poverty; we are redeemed out of our need; not because of our material wealth or achievements that the world finds praiseworthy. St. James also suggests that we are stewards of others, especially the poor; and it is how we respond to the poor and needy that will define our relationship with the Lord. How do we respond to the less fortunate right within our own parish?

REPORTING SEXUAL ABUSE: Anyone who has reasonable cause to suspect the sexual abuse of a minor by a member of the clergy or other Church personnel is urged to report the matter immediately. To inform the Diocese of Joliet, call Mrs. Judith Speckman (Victim Assistance Coordinator) at 815-263-6467 or write the Diocese of Joliet, 425 Summit Street, Joliet 60435. Ten Commandments for Eucharistic Reverence

These Ten Commandments are taken from Our Reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist; O Come, Let Us Adore Him by Fr. Charles M. Mangan. Take time this week to work on this one commandment. We will continue to print one commandment each week. For an archive, please view previous bulletins on our website: www.ctklombard.org. VI. Spend time with the Eucharistic Jesus outside of Mass. The Eucharist is continually adorable during and outside of Mass. During Eucharistic Processions, Forty Hours, Holy Hours and Visits to the Blessed Sacrament (whether exposed in the Monstrance or reserved in the Tabernacle), we adore the Messiah while simultaneously growing in likeness to Him. We infallibly draw closer to the Eucharistic Jesus by spending time with Him as we sincerely seek to be converted.

UNUSED AND EXPIRED MEDICATIONS COLLECTION SEPTEMBER 15 & 16

Start gathering up all of the unused or expired medications that you may have in your medicine chest for our next Meds Collection on September 15 & 16 Bring the old prescriptions and OTC meds with you when you come to mass that week-end. Unfinished meds can be used in third world countries and those that are expired will be disposed of properly. When we throw old medications into our waterways we are hurting our environment. Leave medications in their original containers with the labels intact. Please cross out your name for privacy. Look for boxes marked Medical Missions in the Narthex to collect them. NO NEEDLES PLEASE. A CCW Community Concerns Project.

On Friday, October 12th, Ss. Peter and Paul in Naperville will be hosting the first in a series of speakers for the Year of Faith. We are excited to have joining us popular Catholic philosopher, author and speaker, Dr. Peter Kreeft. The event will be at 7:00pm in the Holy Family Chapel. No tickets necessary. A free will offering will be taken and a selection of Catholic books will be on sale.

Spirituality: God Doesn't Care What You Wear to Church......But your neighbors do.
There was a time not so long ago when folks just knew what was appropriate attire for church and what wasnt. They didnt need a reminder. For instance, when I look back to pictures of crowds at Cleveland Indians games from the 1950s, the men were wearing the same outfits to the ball game that they would wear to Mass on Sunday morningsdress pants, a shirt, a tie and a hat. In other words, the culture and the church were on the same page in regard to proper attire. The same, I am told, is true of air travel. There was a time when people actually dressed up in their Sunday best to fly from one city to another, whether they were flying in first class or coach. Cultural trends have changed dramatically in recent years as far as dress is concerned, and we Americans have become much more casual in our attire. And since it is now acceptable to dress down for baseball games, air travel and even the theatre, we shouldnt be too surprised that this trend has carried over to church. But is there anything we can do about it?

Mayslake Ministries is pleased to present a day with three renowned speakers. Join us for an inspiring event that is sure to bring enrichment to your faith life. Date: October 6, 2012 from 9am-3pm Location: The Abbington Glen Ellyn, IL Cost: $75 each; $65 catechist/ religious/clergy rate Tickets include continental breakfast and a boxed lunch. COME ONE, COME ALL AND STEP INTO HISTORY THE CELEBRATION OF A FESTIVAL OF FAITH AT OUR OWN PARISH OF

CHRIST THE KING CHURCH IN LOMBARD on October 7, 2012, Sunday

"Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!"
What is Faith? According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph #142 By his Revelation, "the invisible God, from the fullness of his love, addresses men as his friends, and moves among them, in order to invite and receive them into his own company."1The adequate response to this invitation is faith. By faith, man completely submits his intellect and his will to God.2 With his whole being man gives his assent to God the revealer. Sacred Scripture calls this human response to God, the author of revelation, "the obedience of faith".3 Faith is an unquestioning belief in the one, true God, of three Persons, in the truth of all that God has revealed on the basis of His authority as the One who has revealed it, and in all that the Church proposes for out of that belief. Faith is a grace; it is a human act; it brings us to understanding. Faith is the beginning of eternal life; it makes us taste in advance the light of the beatific vision - the goal of our journey here below. Grace is God reaching down to us. Faith is man reaching back to God. What is a festival? It is a day, time or occasion for feasting or celebration, especially a day, time or occasion of religious significance that recurs at regular intervals. It is historically interchangeable with feast which is a set of celebrations in honor of God. Why a Festival of Faith? The Second Vatican Council (also known as Vatican II) addressed the role and relations between the Roman Catholic Church and the modern world. It opened under Pope John XXIII on October 11, 1962 and closed under Pope Paul VI on December 8, 1965. Of those who took part in the council's opening session, four have become pontiffs, to date: Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Pope John Paul II, and the present Pope Benedict XVI. To mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of Vatican II, in October, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI had made the period from October, 2012 to the end of November, 2013 (the Solemnity of Christ the King) a "Year of Faith," in a solemn declaration and ordered all parishes and religious institutions to find some manner during that year, of celebrating and reaffirming the Creed, the fundamental basis of our faith. There are now two main creeds: the shorter Apostles' Creed and the lengthier Niceno-Constantinopolitan or Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed is recited at each Mass, and both are listed and "examined in the landmark 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church." They serve as fundamental declarations that a catechumen or a baptized Catholic identifies with the Church. Knowing God's immeasurable love for us, marked by His innumerable blessings and grace bestowed upon us everyday of our lives, calls for a celebration. Our celebration on October 7 is simply not a gathering together to enjoy each other's company, but most of all to praise as a community in immense joy and gratitude a great God who has shown us mercy, forgiveness, unconditional love and given us the promise of eternal life in heaven. Let us make the most then of our Festival of Faith, a small effort perhaps to thank and honor God, but an action nevertheless that will please Him and be looked upon by Him with glad acceptance to no end. The initiating highlight of October 7 is the offering of HOLY MASS to start the day in a blessed and most celebratory manner. DO NOT CONSIDER YOURSELVES AS GUESTS AT THE FESTIVAL OF FAITH (though you may invite friends and guests from outside)!!! Rather, consider yourselves active participants to make the Festival of Faith alive and meaningful by volunteering to man or perform any of the many activities that will be held on that day. You will derive a lot of fun, you'll see, in engaging directly in some of the actions. Please sign up for any of the following: Entertainment and Games for the children if you think you are of the fun and playful type who knows how to conduct the various children's games and activities Cooking, selling and serving the fares for lunch: Burgers, brats, hotdogs, chips, soda; Bringing a dish of your specialty or choice to share at the lunch table Promoting and selling raffle tickets (with prizes ranging from $100 to $500.00) Helping coordinate and direct "traffic" during the various presentations: Tae Kwon Do by Yong in USA Marshall Arts students, Zumba Dance (a South American native dance), Organizing the festival grounds by helping in the setting of the tents, chairs, tables, lights, sound system, etc.

Marriage Love and Life in the Divine Plan

This is a pastoral letter by the Catholic Bishops of the United States. It can be found on the US Bishops website: http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/ .

Join us for a class on this Pastoral Letter: September 19th and 26th at 7:00 pm in the Parish Life Center
While marriage is a special blessing for Christians because of the grace of Christ, marriage is also a natural blessing and gift for everyone in all times and cultures. It is a source of blessing to the couple, to their families, and to society and includes the wondrous gift of co-creating human life. Indeed, as Pope John Paul II never tired of reminding us, the future of humanity depends on marriage and the family. It is just such a conviction that has led us, the Catholic bishops of the United States, to write this pastoral letter. usccb This class is for married, single, divorced. It is to bring understanding to what the Catholic Church teaches on marriage by understanding our pastoral letter. It is not necessary to have read the pastoral letter prior to attending the class. To register or for more information contact Eileen Maggiore at 630-396-6076 or by email at eileen@ctklombard.org.
