All of Us - #565 by Fr. Larry There are a variety of images that are often used to describe what it is like to be a pastor who ministers to a community of faith-filled believers today. The most classic and common one is based in the scriptures. It is the image of the Good Shepherd, found in St. John's gospel, who guides and watches over his flock. The sheep know his voice and trust that he will lead them to verdant pastures where they will be safe, united as one flock, and filled with a sense of peace and security. Another image of pastoring was presented to me when I was a deacon, studying in my last year of the seminary, right before being ordained to the priesthood. The professor said, being a pastor in a parish is much like the music conductor of a symphony orchestra. All the musicians look to the conductor to hold it all together and keep everyone in sync as they make their way through the complicated pages of sheet music. An orchestra contains many individual musicians, and it is the skill of the conductor to make sure they all work in unison, complementing each other to perform at their best to create a beautiful work of art. Earlier this year I mentioned that I was participating in a review of my Priestly Ministry which is conducted by the Archdiocesan Office of Ministerial Evaluation. This is a process to evaluate and improve my work as a priest. Parishioners at-large, the pastoral staff and parish leaders were asked to be a part of the review team. I thank all those who returned their candid responses to the survey. Overall, the comments were strongly affirming and grateful for my pastoring. The comments also suggested areas for further development. After the data was gathered and collected, I met with a priest colleague who reviewed the data with me. Your responses and these meetings have given me solid material to pray over and help form a Development Plan and set goals for the future. This is a summary under the headings of Areas of Strength, Recommendations and Goals. Areas of Strength:

Homilies are well prepared, relevant and spiritually enriching.

Principal Recommendations for Growth:

Provide outreach to inactive Catholics and persons who do not belong to the church. Improve conflict management skills to better handle opposition and dissent. Take time for spiritual direction and opportunities for personal prayer.

Goals for this next year:

Work with the Parish Council to create and implement an Evangelization program. Attend workshops and seminars pertaining to conflict management skills. Attend a retreat. Meet regularly with a spiritual director.

Thank you to all who participated in this review process. I am humbled by the positive feedback and grateful for your recommendations both personal and ministerial. I am fortunate to be the pastor of SS. Cyril & Methodius, because I know that in many ways I am blessed by the faith, love and support of parishioners. Please pray for me as I continue to pray for all of you. A Good Friend Moves On I recently received a letter in the mail this month from our Sharing Parish, St. Adalbert's, located at 17th Street and Halsted on the south side of Chicago. Fr. Mike Michelini writes that his term as pastor has come to an end this September, and that he will be moving on to another assignment which is still under consideration. It has been a joy and a privilege to have worked with Fr. Mike, and to have shared such a wonderful relationship between our two parishes. I ask that you keep him in your prayers during his time of transition. The parishioners of St. Adalbert's will be making their annual visit to St. Cyril's on Saturday, October 27th. They will be joining us for the 5:30 PM Mass. What is That Up There?

Provides a vision for the parish. Consults and uses his Boards well. Recruits and invites parishioners to be actively involved in the life, mission and ministries of the parish.

You may have noticed a small spot on the left side of the dome above the altar that just does not look right. Yes, there is a problem. There is a small leak. I wished it would have been something more miraculous, like one of the four evangelists crying in the mural.

The church roof was inspected back in November of 2011. One section on the west side by the bell tower was repaired because over a dozen shingles were blown off during a strong storm. The inspection and repair was all done in light of the painting to take place this year. With an 84 year old building, the only thing you can expect are surprises. My guess is that some of the violent storms we had this August contributed to the problem. We are in the process of having the roof repaired as soon as possible, and to have the interior look perfect to coincide with the rest of the church. Helping Our Children Learn This Sunday we acknowledge and affirm the men and women who have embraced the vocation of teaching our young children in either our Parish School, Religious Education program or the John Paul II Polish School of Lemont. At the 12:00 Mass this Sunday, our teachers will be blessed and commissioned as they enter into a new academic year. On this Catechetical Sunday, we ask for Gods blessings to be upon our educators as they help our children grow not just in wisdom and knowledge, but also in their Catholic faith. The teachers, along with the parents, help the children grow spiritually in a united effort of caring for their souls. Our children need to know at a very young age that God loves them. They need to hear the Jesus story explained to them. They need to understand that we are all called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and to continue to transform the world by working each day to build Gods kingdom of justice and peace.

Some of the best lessons in life that are learned by kids may not occur from reading a textbook or hearing a lecture in a classroom. Some of the biggest impressions left upon a child may actually come from the way children see adults live their lives. Children are very perceptive. They dont miss much. They are not easily fooled. They know when we try to bluff them. Kids pick up on what we say, how we feel and what we care about. They can mock or model our behavior. After awhile they know what we value, what we hate, what we like and what we avoid. They can describe our prejudices and sing our praises. When it comes to believing, they know if our faith is on fire or if it is just lukewarm. They can see if we are just going through the regular motions or taking our relationship with Jesus seriously and to heart. Do they sense that we are proud to be Catholic? Is our Catholic pride contagious? What do kids see in you? We all have the ability to model our faith to the children of our parish. Yes, they are constantly looking at us. They watch our every move. What is the impression we will leave with them? What will they say that they have learned from you when it comes to being a person of faith? Gather Around the Table of the Lord This week I celebrated an "All School Mass" with the children of our Parish School as we marked the beginning of the new school year and prayed for God's blessings to be upon us. Below is a neat picture taken from the choir loft. I'm the guy in the middle with the gray hair.

SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish United in Faith Dear Parents,

September 16, 2012

This Sunday, September 16th is Catechetical Sunday. It is a special day set aside to acknowledge all of the talented individuals from our parish who work to teach the faith to our children. They are special people who are sharing their gift of faith! The SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish School faculty will join with teachers from Religious Education and Polish School at the Noon Mass. All of these individuals will be called forth and commissioned for their ministry. Please keep them in your prayers for a successful year as they work to pass on our faith and to be a witness to the Gospel teachings. This past week I was very busy visiting the students and teachers, especially those in our younger grades. Of course, we are very happy to have all of our new kindergarten and preschool students! Our students and staff all seem to be working hard and settling into some good routines. Everyone seems to be enjoying our remodeled media center. It is very exciting to see the continuing work of our faculty teams. All of our teachers are working together and supporting each other with curriculum, assessment, technology and discipline. Thank you for all you do and for your continued help and support! Please be sure to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Mrs. S. Tkachuk Principal

Helping Hands Needs Your Help

Over the summer months, our shelves in Helping Hands have been depleted. We need your help to stock up for the fall and winter months. Helping Hands collects food to distribute to members of the Lemont community. Grocery bags are available in the back of church to remind you to consider picking up items on your next grocery visit to return to church. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. We are always in need of non-perishable foods like canned soups and vegetables, pasta, sauces, chili, tuna, cereal and baking and pancake mixes. We also need non-food items such as paper towels, napkins, soaps (hand, dish and laundry), shampoo, mouthwash and toothpaste. Thank you for your support and generosity! Lemont Parishes ProLife Ministry
St. Alphonsus, SS. Cyril & Methodius, St. James, St. Patrick

On October 4, 2012, Our Lady of the Woods is hosting Meditation on the Gospel of Life and praying the rosary after the 8:30 AM Mass and then repeated at 7 PM in the Chapel. Our parish welcomes people with a developmental or intellectual challenge, down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders or learning problems. They can benefit from a program called SPRED which has existed in the Archdiocese since 1967 and is in 156 parishes. We need your help. Parents and interested people are invited to a SPRED Informational Gathering on Monday, September 17th at 7 PM in our schools teachers lounge. SPRED is a wonderful small faith sharing program. Please consider this ministry! Guadalupe, Anita, Richard and Marianna have said, Yes! We need four more adult volunteers! We also want to know the parents of a child, teenager, young adult or adult with special needs no matter their limitations or abilities.

Youth Ministry How Do I Join ?

We will begin a new year of Tri-Parish Youth Ministry next month. Many new high school teens have been asking how they can join. The process is very simple. You can email me, Mike Lundberg at lemontyouthm@sbcglobal.net and I will put you on the email list and inform you of coming events. I will also send flyers to your home address a week before the event. We have many great things planned for the coming year. Our formal meetings are on Sunday nights at 6:00 PM in St Pats parish center. We are a fun and welcoming group. Many teens have made life-long friends of the teens they have met in youth ministry. It is a great way to stay connected to your faith and church as well as meet some really great kids. Mike Lundberg Youth Minister

College Connection
Lemont Tri-Parish Youth Ministry has introduced a new program called the College Connection. The program is designed to keep a connection to students leaving home and their parishes through mail that will be sent to them while they are away at school. Students will receive bulletins, care packages, prayers and other surprises sent to their mailboxes while away at school. To be a part of the program email Mike Lundberg (Tri-Parish Youth Minister) at lemontyouthm@sbcglobal.net with the name and school address of the student that would like to participate.

Reminder About Background Checks and Protecting Gods Children Workshops Please remember that the Archdiocese of Chicago is requiring all volunteers who work with children in our parish, parish school, school sports program and religious education program to go through a background check and attend the Protecting Gods Children workshop. The background check and the workshop are two separate things and are found at two different websites. Several of these workshops are being held at nearby parishes over the summer and in the fall. The dates and times are listed below. Please remember that you need to register online at www.virtus.org before attending the workshop. If you cannot make one of these workshops then you will need to go to a different parish than the ones listed below to attend the workshop. A complete listing of the different sites for these workshops can be found at the VIRTUS website. If you have any questions or would like a packet of information to help you register for the background check and the workshop please call Trish Nickleski at 630-257-9314. This also includes all who volunteer in the sports program at the parish school. This is a requirement of the Archdiocese and all parishes are being required to have their volunteers complete these two requirements along with paper work that can be obtained by contacting your program coordinator or calling Trish in the Religious Education office at (630) 257-9314.

We are continuing with the quiz from the Bishops website. If you miss any weeks questions, please see our bulletin online or the usccb.org website. 11. Undocumented immigrants pay taxes. A) True B) False 12. How long has the average jobless worker been unemployed? A) 6 months B) 9 months C) 10 months D) 12 months 13. Unauthorized migrants take advantage of our welfare system to their own advantage and at the taxpayers expense. A) True B) False 14. According to a 2009 survey by The Polling Company, Inc., what percentage of American adults believed it is important to make sure that health care professionals in America are not forced to participate in procedures and practices to which they have moral objections? A) 28% B) 42% C) 65% D) 87% 11. Answer: A) True. Undocumented immigrants pay taxes. Between 5075% of undocumented immigrants pay federal, state and local taxes. Further still, undocumented workers pay sales taxes where applicable and property taxes directly if they own and indirectly if they rent. 12. Answer: C) 10 months. 13. Answer: B) False. On a federal level, and with very few exceptions (for example, prenatal care), unauthorized immigrants are ineligible to receive assistance through means tested public benefits. On a state level, individual states have to make an affirmative legislative decision to provide services to the unauthorized populations; the default position is such that the unauthorized population is prohibited from receiving such benefits. 14. Answer: D) 87%. In an April 2009 survey by The Polling Company, Inc., 87% of American adults believed it is important (and 65% saw it as very important) to "make sure that health care professionals in America are not forced to participate in procedures and practices to which they have moral objections." ~Doreen Dabney
