All of Us - #566 by Fr. Larry Last week on my day off, I was invited to attend a fundraiser for St. Mary of the Lake University, located in Mundelein, Illinois. This is the major seminary for the Archdiocese of Chicago. The events of the day included a round of golf followed by a banquet that honored two senior priests for their many years of service to God's people. It was nice to return to the place where I went to school to study theology in the early 80's. A flood of old memories surfaced in my mind as I drove through the campus. I thought of some of my old professors back then who taught their students the basics, like how to celebrate the Mass, hear a confession and baptize a baby. Many of the current young seminarians were working hard behind the scenes throughout the day making sure their guests felt welcomed and appreciated. Some served at the tables; others washed dishes in the kitchen; a few were in the parking lot offering valet service to those who found it difficult to walk from building to building on the huge campus. On the golf course, one seminarian studying for the diocese of Rockford, was responsible for taking the pictures of each foursome as they passed through his station on the first tee. With camera in hand, he politely introduced himself, asked everyone to assemble together, face towards the sunshine and smile. He even asked our permission to take a second shot. When done, he graciously thanked us for our time and hoped that we played well. As our foursome drove down the fairway in our white golf carts, one priest jokingly said to the rest of the guys, "You know, I don't remember any of us ever being that nice when we were in the seminary." I said, "You know what? I was thinking the same thing myself. That's the same impression I got." Today we have the opportunity to support those who are preparing for the priesthood through our prayers and donations. Thank you for your generous response to the second collection today. After serving for four years on the Priest's Placement Board, I am very much aware of how difficult it is to try to find enough good priests to take care of the sacramental needs of parishes today. More and more, you are hearing how a pastor is now becoming responsible for two parishes.
Please pray for future vocations and encourage those who you think would make good priests to consider the vocation. Maybe God is calling them to a life that embraces the ministry and mission of Jesus. Our Church needs good priests today. Parents now are in the best position to recruit for the priesthood. Long ago, we relied on the nuns in grammar school to foster vocations from within the kids in their classroom. Now we need to look for vocations from within the home. Information about the priesthood can be obtained through our Vocation Office at www.ChicagoPriest.com. Rev. Brian Welter is the Director. He is very good at assisting someone who is trying to discern God's call in their life. In Your Prayers Cardinal George has asked for our prayers as he undergoes his chemotherapy during the next four months. Messages and cards can be mailed to the Cardinal at this address: Francis Cardinal George, OMI Archbishop of Chicago 835 North Rush Street Chicago, Illinois 60611 I am sure he will find great comfort and strength knowing that the people of St. Cyril's are praying for his return to full health.
How many times in our lives has a priest brought healing to you and to your families? How many times has a priest celebrated the liturgy on Sunday, throughout the week and at special parish and family celebrations, bringing Christ to you through the Eucharist? How many times has a priest stood with you in joy at the birth of a child; at your bedside in the hospital or in sorrow at the death of a loved one? Let us pray for vocations to the priesthood; that we may have priests whose lives are directed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the service of Gods people. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and financial support for this Collection for the Seminary System of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish United in Faith Religious Education News By Trish Nickleski, D.R.E. Dear Parents,
Registrations for religious education classes for this school year MUST be turned in as soon as possible! If you have not already registered your children for religious education classes you must do so NOW by calling the religious education office at (630) 257-9314. In order for your child to make their First Holy Communion in second grade they must complete first grade. Last week in all the sixth grade classrooms, I presented each of the students with a Bible that they will use for the next three years in their religious education classes during a Prayer Service. The Bibles that are given to the children are age appropriate Catholic Bibles that have side bars throughout dealing with topics that children of this age may be looking for more information on. In sixth grade the concentration of study is the Old Testament so they will be using their Bibles quite often.
The past week was a very busy one for all of the members of our school community! Each Monday we gather as a faith community for prayer and announcements in our gym. It is really a positive way to start off each week. During this time we also acknowledge all students who are celebrating a birthday! On Friday, September 21st our Junior High students participated in their Leadership Retreat. This was a day designed to help them work together and further develop the skills necessary to become good leaders. Our students were complimented on their behavior and also on the quality of the work they achieved during the day. Our entire school is proud of the job they did. Finally, last Sunday our entire teaching staff joined the parish in celebration of Catechetical Sunday. Please join us this coming Thursday, September 27th for McTeacher Night. Members of our staff will be hard at work and very anxious to help with your order! Once again, thank you for your constant commitment and support of our school! Mrs. S. Tkachuk Principal

SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish United in Faith Faithful Citizenship Quiz
Reminder About Background Checks and Protecting Gods Children Workshops Please remember that the Archdiocese of Chicago is requiring all volunteers who work with children in our parish, parish school, school sports program and religious education program to go through a background check and attend the Protecting Gods Children workshop. The background check and the workshop are two separate things and are found at two different websites. Several of these workshops are being held at nearby parishes over the summer and in the fall. The dates and times are listed below. Please remember that you need to register online at www.virtus.org before attending the workshop. If you cannot make one of these workshops then you will need to go to a different parish than the ones listed below to attend the workshop. A complete listing of the different sites for these workshops can be found at the VIRTUS website. If you have any questions or would like a packet of information to help you register for the background check and the workshop please call Trish Nickleski at 630-257-9314. Our Lady of the Woods, Orland Park 10/20/12 at 9:00 AM St. Francis Xavier, La Grange 9/23/12 at 1:00 PM St. George, Tinley Park 10/9/12 at 6:30 PM Please note that if you do not complete the above requirements by October 31st you will not be allowed to volunteer with children at the school and the religious education program. This also includes all who volunteer in the sports program at the parish school. This is a requirement of the Archdiocese and all parishes are being required to have their volunteers complete these two requirements along with paper work that can be obtained by contacting your program coordinator or calling Trish in the Religious Education office at (630) 257-9314.
We are continuing with the quiz from the Bishops website. If you miss any weeks questions, please see our bulletin online or the usccb.org website. 15. Children in single-parent families comprise ____ of all American children, yet they account for ____ of all poor children. A) 27%, 62%; B) 31%, 49%; C) 39%, 71%; D) 42%, 50%. 16. How many patients who are hospitalized in the United States each year are cared for in a Catholic hospital? A) 1 in 9; B) 1 in 6; C) 1 in 5; D) 1 in 3. 17. According to a study by the University of Chicago which factor best predicts that a boy will exhibit good behavior in 5th grade and avoid being suspended in 8th grade? A) Attending a high-quality elementary school; B) Being raised in an intact home with both his father and mother; C) Receiving instruction from a caring competent teacher; D) Attending a highquality preschool. 15. Answer: A) 27%, 62%. Sadly, children in single-parent homes are much more likely to suffer poverty than children being raised by their father and mother not only material poverty, but also the poverty of lacking one of their parents, usually their father. Strong marriages are the foundation of a strong society. Read more on the relationship between marriage and the common good. (on the website usccb.org) 16. Answer: B) 1 in 6. Catholic hospitals care for 1 in 6 patients in the United States each year, and provide the full continuum of health care through more than 2,000 sponsors, systems, facilities, and related organizations, employing 725,000 individuals. 17. Answer: B) Being raised in an intact home with both his father and mother. In addition to confirming again that both moms and dads matter for children, this recent study is unique because it illuminates the crucial influence that fathers have on their sons. The researchers found that even when controlling for school quality and other external factors, the presence or absence of a father at home was the biggest single correlate with a boy's ability to interact appropriately with peers and adults. A similar effect on girls was not found. Here is more information on why the Church teaches that children need a father and a mother. (see usccb.org) ~Doreen Dabney
