Workshop on

Enriching the Auditing Strategies of Auditors with NLP

Introduction and Objectives: Framework: The science of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is the study of human communication. The application of NLP to an audit interaction adds a powerful tool to the auditors tool box. NLP teaches that an auditors internal state, language skills, and level of rapport during an interaction greatly influence the success of the audit. Fine-tuning ones communication skills allows for excellence in auditing. Auditors must have a refined skill set to be successful. Much of the training and education surrounding auditing focuses on the mechanics of auditing. However, most auditors agree that the key to an effective audit comes from the information gained during one-on-one interactions between the auditor and the auditee. Because of the intense interpersonal nature of an audit, auditors must have excellent interaction skills. This course teaches auditors how to build rapport quickly and efficiently using Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). Using NLP in the interactions taking place during an audit, interpersonal communications are greatly improved. When relationships are built quickly, auditors are able to gather high quality data. The application of NLP to an audit interaction gives the auditors a powerful technique to add to his/her tool box. Contents of the workshop are: Personal State Management Skills Congruity of internal environment: Confidence Clarity Certainty Flexibility Qualitative Communication skills Setting up the frame. Developing appropriate rapport. Meta Model - Language techniques to extract model of the world as it is. Back tracking and Listening skills Figuring out Meta Messages

Observation Skills (the ability to gather information in real time) Representation Systems Developing Sensory Acuity Developing the Reticular Activating System ( sharpening intuition) Matching and mismatching Detecting Incongruity Relational Skills (the ability to recognize and selects appropriate behavior in relation to role, culture, contexts etc). Improvement in information gathering and developing balanced perspective

Rapport Making. Developing and balancing Multiple Perspectives. Handling the stereo types of blamer, placator, and computer and distracter auditee. Role clarity. Principle of Positive Intention. Resolving Conflicts.

Outcome frames, Problem solving frames, how to avoid blame frame etc. Designing and analytical Skills (the ability to break down issues into component pieces; to categorize its elements into meaningful chunks) Chunking up and chunking down. Decomposing the system into relevant parts. Develop and determine Criterion for evaluation. Looking for evidence TOTE Model Test Operate Test Exit. Drawing Inferences.

Planning and Organizational Skills Outcome Clarity Envisioning the audit strategy, into meaningful chunks. Allocation of resources and time to the audit strategy. Developing the audit plan Modifying and documenting the audit plan for changes in ground reality for keeping the audit objective in mind. Learning to thinking in possibilities rather than Necessities How to maintain feedback rather than failure frame. How to be Curious rather than keeping Assumptions about the situation and contexts. Report Writing CIDIS FORMAT C = Current Practice. I = Systemic Impact of the Current Practice. D = Deviation from established criterion (ISO: 9000 and ISO 1400). I = Systemic Impact if the standards are followed in practice.

Program Outcomes: How does this workshop improves the auditing experience? Expansion in awareness and alertness during the period of audit. Enhanced sensory acuity is helpful in determining the scope of audit and evaluating audit evidence. Broadening in Perspective leads to thoroughness in evaluating audit evidence. Ability to generate rapport and hold it for the period of audit facilitates in generating co operation from the auditee. Finesse in communication skills improves the quality of questioning diplomatically and tactfully. Improves the ability to determine the audit strategy and completion of audit in time.
