1. Who we are Media for Development (MFD) is a founder-led, social media innovations company that uses the creative power of media to work with marginalised communities and individuals in ways which build confidence and new skills, and enables people to participate more fully in society. We are a team of dedicated media professionals who believe that the creative power of media can be applied to finding solutions to some of societys more intractable problems. We manage radio and TV stations in prisons which offer people new skills and opportunities to change their lives for the better, community film projects which encourage people to think about themselves in more positive ways, and online digital platforms which get young people talking to each other and working out how best to handle lifes everyday problems. We also have a track record of establishing successful social enterprises; our income-generating arms are an established film production company (Inside Job Productions), and an app development company (to be launched later in 2012 with grant-funding support). 2. What we are offering We are offering an opportunity to an exceptional individual to take our organisation to the next stage of growth. As a founder-led organisation since its inception in 1999, we believe that now is the time to find a highly experienced and driven person to build on the broad range of projects that we currently deliver and to identify new ways in which we can secure our position as the leading social media innovations company within the third sector. We are a collaborative and entrepreneurial group of people, based in Hoxton Square, East London, at the heart of the newly-defined digital innovations hub. As a close-knit team, we share a drive to be creative in the approach we take to our work while at the same time we are commercially aware, with two social enterprises that aim to contribute to our running costs. We offer an environment that will suit an individual who shares our high-minded, yet hard-headed approach to social change. We also offer the right individual the chance to shape the leadership structure in a way which best suits the needs of the organisation. The new CEO will have the opportunity to play a role in the selection of new Board members that reflect the evolving needs of MFD. You will be supported by an Executive Chair the founder of MFD who will provide his extensive knowledge and experience of the environment we work within, while at the same time allowing you space to help shape the organisation and a new operational strategy in the way which you believe to be most appropriate for success. The salary being offered will be reviewed after a 6-month appraisal. 3. Who you are Media for Development (MFD) has been growing steadily since its launch in 1999 and is now looking to accelerate growth. We are looking for a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience of scaling an organization, leading a project management team, and developing a performance culture amongst a group of diverse and talented individuals. The CEO must provide effective and inspiring leadership of MFD by being actively involved in all of its projects and services. S/he must be an individual who can lead a high-performing team of Project Managers to the next level by further developing and implementing recruitment, training, and retention strategies. The successful CEO will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to this mission. While it is essential that the CEO brings efficient and effective systems to increase the productivity of the organization, it is also critical that the team retains the creative spark that drives the MFD concept.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Executive Chair and Board of MFD, the CEO will lead all its operations and will have the following responsibilities: Working in consultation with the Executive Chair and Board of MFD, create the strategic plan for the organisation and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it Work with the Executive Chair to ensure that the Board receives appropriate advice and information on all relevant matters and enables it to fulfill its governance responsibilities, as well as ensure the engagement and involvement of all members of the Board Co-ordinate the annual operations plan and budget, lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the organization, and provide for the staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence Manage and cultivate existing and new relationships with funders to secure and expand recurring funding streams Supported by the Executive Chair and Board, publicly represent MFD with the media and external constituency groups including community, governmental, and private organisations and build an excitement for MFDs mission Lead and manage the organisations project management team so that existing projects are delivering against agreed objectives Lead on growth opportunities and priorities, with a particular focus on winning new contracts within the criminal justice sector Support the growth of income-generating activities within the trading arms of the organization Oversee and administer proposal preparation and grant writing Key Qualifications: This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with extensive leadership experience to grow and further develop proven programmes that have already made a significant impact. As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must identify with the core values of MFD and drive forward our mission. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change. We are looking for a candidate that has experience in leading growth and replication in an organization and a demonstrated ability to both lead and build the capabilities of a driven, bright, and creative team. The successful candidate will have had extensive management experience within a not-for-profit organization, statutory body, or have relevant skills and experience gained from the private sector. MFD is an organization driven by the values of its staff while at the same time operating in an entrepreneurial style, identifying and responding rapidly to new opportunities that arise, so experience of working in a similar environment will be highly prized. Additional requirements are: Results: a proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation; evidence of the ability to make consistently good decisions

A high level of business acumen: Successful P & L management and the ability to balance the delivery of projects against the realities of a budget; problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness Strategic vision and agility: Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into an organizational plan Capacity building: Ability to build the staffs capacity, developing an excellent and motivated workforce and the processes that ensure that the organization runs smoothly Leadership and organization: Exceptional capacity to manage and lead people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up teams and/or organizations; ability to connect with staff on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower existing team members, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed Action oriented: Enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary General management: Thorough understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing 4.
