INTRODUCTION

Through out the pages of Scripture, I see a picture of a tenderly loving Father
who encourages, comforts and strengthens His people in times of trouble. In the
Old Testament age, the compassionate Father is seen in several occasion, even
though offended and rejected by His people, yet was touched by the feeling of
their infirmities. In most cases He rescued them from total collapse.
In the New Testament age, when Jesus walked physically on the land of
Palestine, the Bible made this remark about Him – “How God anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and
healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”- Acts 10:38.
In Nazareth, Jesus said of Himself as He read from the book of Prophet
Isaiah, - ”The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to
preach the gospel to the poor, HE HATH SENT ME TO HEAL THE BROKEN-HEARTED, to
preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set
at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” –
Luke 4:18,19 (Emphasis mine). This ministry was fulfilled. As we read through the
pages of the four gospels we discover the numerous times when Jesus healed all
manner of diseases, raised the dead to life and forgave the sins of the sinner.
The hopeless sought Jesus for hope, the hungry for bread and the leper for
cleansing.
Before His crucifixion, He made this promise to His people – “I will pray
the Father, and he shall give you ANOTHER Comforter, that he may abide with you
for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it
seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and
shall be in you.” - John 14:16,17.
Thus we see the blessed Trinity comforting and encouraging those who put
their trust in Him. This divine attribute of God gave birth to this book. As you
go through its pages, you will discover more about the compassionate God who is
always by your side.
Sometimes you feel discouraged as a result of the attacks of the devil on
every side. They come in divers ways that you begin to question the reality of the
presence of God. Pressure from every side seems to overwhelm you. The people you
think will help have disappointed you on every occasion you called on them for
help. You are about to give up your faith. Friend, be of good courage. God is
still on the throne. He is still in charge of the earth and all that is in it.
As we draw closer to the end of the age, the battle between righteousness
and unrighteousness gets more and more fierce. Satan tries to draw as many souls
as he can to camp. The people that resist him incur his wrath. In all, God is
saying, “be of good courage, he that endures to the end shall be saved.” As long
as the church is still on earth, persecution, affliction, trials of diverse kinds
are inevitable. They are however not meant to discourage you but to promote you.
The word of God is given to quicken you in times of trials. The Psalmist knew this
secret. He says, - “Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast
caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath
quickened me.” – Psalm 119:49,50. David was one-man trials and afflictions did not
stop from pressing forward in the love of God. The Lord will uphold you with His
hands as He did to David and other men of faith who passed through this word.
The purpose of this book is to present to you a loving Father who wipes away
the tears of His children. The Father who rewards faithfulness. The Father who
strengthens His people is The Great Comforter indeed!
Like the Apostle Paul, I have tested His goodness and rejoiced in His
Comfort in times of troubles. So I am motivated to share this book with you. When
the enemy thought mine has come to an end, when the devil thought by afflicting me
he will put me out of the kingdom business. When it seemed as though there was no
hope for me. Behold, the God of all comfort is always by my side. Be of good
cheers! The Bible says, “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our
tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the
comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” – II Corinthians 1:3,4
You are about to read the things that kept me on in the faith and ministry.
The comfort wherewith I was comforted in times of affliction I am about to share
with you. Like King David of old, the word of God caused me to hope and the same
word that strengthens me daily I bring across your way to day.
I read through the write-up of a certain man of God on Isaiah 48:10, and I
was tremendously blessed. It reads - “Comfort thyself, tried believer, with this
thought: God saith, "I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction." Does not
the word come like a soft shower, assuaging the fury of the flame? Yea, is it not
an asbestos armour, against which the heat hath no power? Let affliction come--God
has chosen me. Poverty, thou mayst stride in at my door, but God is in the house
already, and He has chosen me. Sickness, thou mayst intrude, but I have a balsam
ready--God has chosen me. Whatever befalls me in this vale of tears, I know that
He has "chosen" me. If, believer, thou requirest still greater comfort, remember
that you have the Son of Man with you in the furnace. In that silent chamber of
yours, there sitteth by your side One whom thou hast not seen, but whom thou
lovest; and ofttimes when thou knowest it not, He makes all thy bed in thy
affliction, and smooths thy pillow for thee. Thou art in poverty; but in that
lovely house of thine the Lord of life and glory is a frequent visitor. He loves
to come into these desolate places, that He may visit thee. Thy friend sticks
closely to thee. Thou canst not see Him, but thou mayst feel the pressure of His
hands. Dost thou not hear His voice? Even in the valley of the shadow of death He
says, "Fear not, I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God." Remember that
noble speech of Caesar: "Fear not, thou carriest Caesar and all his fortune." Fear
not, Christian; Jesus is with thee. In all thy fiery trials, His presence is both
thy comfort and safety. He will never leave one whom He has chosen for His own.
"Fear not, for I am with thee," is His sure word of promise to His chosen ones in
the "furnace of affliction." Wilt thou not, then, take fast hold of Christ, and
say-- "Through floods and flames, if Jesus lead, I'll follow where He goes."
I know you are comforted already. This book is your best companion so, read
it again and again. Use it for counseling and comfort others especially those of
the household of faith. No matter what you are going through now, BE COURAGEOUS!

CHAPTER ONE

THE GREAT REWARDER

You sat down and thought over your life as a devout child of God. As far as your
mind could go, the blood of Jesus has atoned for your sins. You have been trying
your best to love the Lord your God according to scriptural injunctions. But
somehow, you feel unfulfilled as a result of afflictions and trials that come your
way daily and not as a result of your desire or yearning to please the Lord.
Well, these are two different things. If you feel unfulfilled as a result of
your strong desire to please God, you will definitely get stronger daily in His
grace. (Please understand this point clearly). On the other hand, if you feel
unfulfilled as a result of persecutions, trials or pressures of this life, friend,
you will get weaker daily in His grace. Your understanding of this will help you
to appreciate the mercies of God in times of trouble.
Sometimes it seems to you as though evil is multiplying beyond the ratio of
righteousness and like the Psalmist, you are seeing “the wicked watcheth the
righteous, and seeketh to slay him.” – Psalm 37:32. And indeed the wicked did slay
the righteous before you. Your love for God began to wax cold because you cannot
understand why God should allow that. “Where is the God that rewards
faithfulness?” you asked. “Why is He far from His people?” you imagined. “Is He
still on His throne?” you pondered. O yes! He is!
Before turning your back to God, let us study Him from this perspective. In
the book of Amos, He says, “Seek ye me, and ye shall live.” – Amos 5:4. Here God
promises life to those who seek Him. The Lord Jesus described this life as “life
more abundantly.” – John 10:10. Sometimes ago I was meditating on this word “SEEK”
and the Holy Spirit blessed my heart tremendously, so, I want to share that
insight with you.
First and foremost, before you seek something, you must be fully convinced
that the thing is without your immediate reach and that it exists somewhere. That
means it has to be real. This is the first point to note – you are looking for
something real.
Imagine that one day you forgot the key of your house in the market. Getting
to the house you could not open the door and you searched for the key to no avail.
Then you paused and jogged your mind and concluded that you might have forgotten
it in the market probably in the last shop you had entered. So you walked back to
the main road, paid again for a taxi, which took you to the market. When you got
to your suspected shop, there was your bunch of keys.
Think over the process you passed through before finding your bunch of keys
then, you will discover that you went through these four absolutes:

a. You put your mind to use – i.e. Mental Exertion.

If you had not meditated over the places you went to that day, you would not have
concluded that you forgot the keys in the last shop you visited. That means you
would not have found your keys.

b. You put your energy to use by walking to the main road. It was strenuous for
you but if you had not dared it, you would not have gotten a taxi to the market.
Even if you own a car, you must have expended some energy driving to the market.
If you had not done that, you would not have found your keys.

c. You put your money to use. There was no how you could have walked to the
market from the main road because of the distance. You had to pay the fare and if
you had not done that, you would not have found you keys. If you own a car, you
must have paid for the gas.

d. You put your time to use. All these took some time. Even though you had some
other engagements, the most important was to find your keys so that you could
enter into the house and reorganize yourself. If you had not spent that time, you
would not have, of course, found your keys.

These are the four absolutes to SEEKING. In seeking God therefore, have you
exhausted these four? If indeed you have sought God with all your heart, you will
find Him. God says, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for
me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13.
In the world today, the possibility of not finding what you are seeking is
inevitable even though you put all the absolutes to use. This is not the case with
God. He says, “I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said
not unto the seed of Jacob, seek ye me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I
declare things that are right.” – Isaiah 45:19. This means your labour is not in
vain. There is benefit in seeking the Lord. In Psalm 119:2, the Psalmist says,
“Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole
heart.” In chapter 70:4, he says, “Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be
glad in thee.”
The Lord must have something precious for those “that seek him with the whole
heart.” That is why He clearly says, “I said not unto the seed of Jacob (which you
are), seek ye me in vain.” This gives me a great comfort. Probably you have not
understood that “eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the
heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” – I
Corinthians 2:9.
In the early days of my ministry, I had a lot of things that would have made me to
give up. I was convinced of the call of God but did not understand that the
comfort and encouragement that will sustain me cannot come from man but from God
who called me. I struggled to get established in Maiduguri, the capital city of
Borno State of Nigeria (a supposed Muslim dominated city). When the going was so
tough, I went to Lagos because I “felt” my ministry would prosper there. As God
would have it, I came across Rev and Mrs. Arthur E. Hoketts. They have been
missionaries to Africa since 1966. God used them tremendously to comfort and
encourage my heart. Then I came to realize that my ministry is for the north.
Now, the issue was how to travel back to Maiduguri and how to begin again. That is
a long story but the length and breadth of it was that God so much encouraged me
that I returned to Maiduguri miraculously and started without tears. God can do
the same for you today. In a hopeless situation, God can create hope and make a
way for you where there is literally no way.
It is important to know that God does not only reserve rewards in heaven for His
children but He blesses them abundantly here on earth. The Apostle Peter was once
disturbed and wanted to know what will be his reward for seeking the Lord God.
“Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left
house, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundred
fold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and
children, and lands, with persecutions: and in the world to come eternal life.” –
Mark 10:29,30.
The writer of the book of Hebrews gives us a true picture of God as a Great
Rewarder and what should be the attitude of those who seek Him. He writes, “But
without faith it is impossible to please him: For HE THAT COMETH TO GOD MUST
BELIEVE THAT HE IS, AND THAT HE IS A REWARDER OF THEM THAT DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM.” –
Hebrews 11:6 (Emphasis mine).
Unlike man or man-made gods, our God is within the reach of any one who seeks Him
diligently. You must therefore believe in your mind without any atom of doubt that
He is, because He says, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great
and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” – Jeremiah 33:3
I saw God in action immediately I obeyed His voice to settle down and work in the
north the first thing He did was to stir the hearts of some brethren who paid for
my accommodation. That was the most important thing to me then – where to put my
head at night. Then, He provided us with a temporary place of worship and since
then He has been comforting and encouraging me with different kinds of rewards as
occasion warrants.
The problem is, some Christians have so much given in to the suggestions of the
devil (especially when they find themselves in one problem or the other), that
they do not even believe in their prayers. They are so much carried away by
unnecessary thoughts that they fail to see the magnitude of God. When you make up
your mind on what to do before calling on God, prayer becomes a mere formality,
“to fulfill all righteousness”. Such a person does not receive anything from God.
But when you relax your mind (no mater the circumstances), and call upon Him, He
answers with outstanding miracles. One thing you must understand is that God does
not act at the impulse of men. He knows what is best for His children.
From the Old Testament age, we see the God of all comfort comforting His faithful
servants with tremendous rewards. Whose will I write, for there will be no space
in this book to record the comfort and rewards God gave to the Patriarchs? When
Israel seemed to have been lost in Egypt, God heard their cry and sent Moses to
deliver and give them great comfort. Are you is such bondage now? God has purposed
to give you a miracle of deliverance. (Get the book titled – “THE SWORD OF THY
EXCELLENCY” by the same author and read about God’s deliverance which He handed
over to people on platters of gold.
Think of Hannah’s anguish. You may be in that position right now. I prophesy to
you today, as the Lord God visited Hannah and comforted her with Samuel, so shall
He visit you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Believe it, and it is your.
I remember what happened some years ago. I was ministering in a three-day revival
service and one of the nights the Lord spoke thought me and said that He was going
to bless some families with male children. In obedience, I made an altar call for
that. Five women answered the call and one of them was nursing a baby then. She
has had four girls and the husband’s family members were on her neck. In fact, her
husband was at the brink of marrying another woman. According to her, she believed
with all her heart that her next baby was going to be a male child. After prayers
that night, the good Lord who rewards faithfulness visited them including the
mother of four girls and all of them gave birth to male children. Thus the Lord
rolled away the reproach from these families. You might say, “When will it be my
turn?” Do not worry; today may be the appointed day and nine months from now I
will hear your testimony also.
The goodness of the Lord knows no bounds. His mercies are from everlasting to
everlasting. It does not matter to Him what your immediate needs are or what your
desired rewards are. He is faithful unto all that put their trust in Him. The
Psalmist says, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and
glory: no good thing will he with hold from them that walk uprightly. O LORD of
hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.” – Psalm 84:11,12. Get the point
the Psalmist is trying to buttress here. God is a sun and shield at the same time.
He gives grace and glory at the same time. It all depends on the one you need, as
long as you walk uprightly, it is yours to enjoy.
In the New Testament book of Mark 5:25-34 is recorded the story of a woman with an
issue of blood. For twelve good years she lived without hope and comfort because
no doctor could help her situation. In verse 27, the Bible remarks, “When she had
heard of Jesus.” Have you ever thought of what she heard about Jesus? She might
have heard about His compassion. His love and concern for the needy. She might
have heard about the God of all comfort personified in Jesus of Nazareth. Then she
concluded within herself and said, “If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be
whole.” V28. Though weak and tired, she put her faith and confession in action as
she “came in the press behind and touched his garment.” V27. As a result, the
Bible says, “And straightway the fountain of her blood was healed of that plague.”
V29. What a marvelous reward for her faith!
She did not only go home healed of her plague but also with these comforting words
– “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy
plague.” – v34. Indeed she was comforted. Peace at last for a woman who has lost
hope of living. (Get the book titled – “THY FAITH HATH MADE THEE WHOLE” by the
same author and get the full detail account of the woman of the issue of blood,
etc).
Who else will I write to you about? The Apostle Peter tasted the reward he
earnestly longed for when in Matthew 8:14,15 Jesus touched his mother in-law and
healed her of fever. Just imagine the amount of money Peter would have spent in
the hospital for the fever. Oh, our God rewards!
Examine the case of blind Bartinaeus as is recorded in Mark 10:46-52. When the
blind man “heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say,
Jesus thou Son of David, have mercy on me.” – v47. The people might have told
blind Bartimaeus that the God of all comfort has visited His people. So when he
heard that He was passing his way, he withheld not his peace but cried out for
comfort. The well to do felt that Jesus did not come for the needy and rejected
so, they “charged him (Bartimaeus) that he should hold his peace.” – v48. They
must have said to him – “shut up, you dirty blind man. Stop disturbing the public
and distracting the attention of the Master.” The Scripture says, “but he cried
the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.” V48. May be the devil
is telling you now that you cannot succeed in life. He said that to me and to
almost every successful man of faith that has ever existed. May be he is telling
you that God is not for your kind of person. He said that to me also. Do not worry
about that, the devil is a liar. May be you wanted to believe the devil. Remember,
Prophet Isaiah says, “--- ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence, And
give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the
earth.” – Isaiah 62:6,7.
Blind Bartimaeus refused to be intimidated and kept on calling upon the Lord for
mercy and comfort. Verse 49 says, “And Jesus stood still and commanded him to be
called. And they called the blind, saying unto him, BE OF GOOD COMFORT, rise, he
calleth thee.” (Emphasis added). Do you see that the people knew that no one gets
closer to the Lord and goes away comfortless? The devil knows that pretty well.
That is why he has been discouraging you from seeking the Lord with all your
heart. He did that to me so many times. He knows very well that the Lord rewards
faithfulness and answers when you call upon Him with all your heart.
When in Maiduguri we finally purchased a parcel of land for a permanent house of
worship, I heard so many discouraging words from even renowned Christians. As the
good Lord helped us, we started the building of the church without launching for
any appeal fund as some thought and the same people that mocked us applauded us.
Today, we have a church building in the very city of Maiduguri. God rewards
faithfulness!
One outstanding thing that strikes me any time I read about blind Bartimaeus is
his readiness to receive his miracle from the Lord. Verse 50 says, “And he,
casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.” He cast away his dirty, old,
torn garment for a clean, new one. He cast away poverty for prosperity. He cast
away shame for boldness. He cast away sorrow for joy. He cast away sickness for
health. He cast away his old adamic nature for a new life recreated in Christ
Jesus, the only begotten Son of God who gave His life at ransom for the sins of
the whole world.
Finally, his desire was met. “And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath
made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus in the
way.” – v52.
I can go on giving you examples of people God has comforted with such great
rewards even in our generation. The goodnews is that “Jesus Christ is the same
yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” – Hebrews 13:8. What He did for others and
myself, He will do for you. Only hold on and do not attempt to give up. God is
able, yes; He is more than able!

CHAPTER TWO

THOSE WHO KNOW THEIR GOD

Parenthood is a matter of relationship. I do not believe in the theory of

universal fatherhood of God. The Bible shows a sharp contrast between the children
of God and the children of Satan. It is written, “Ye are of your father the devil,
and the lusts of your father ye will do, he was a murderer from the beginning, and
abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie,
he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” – John 8:44. It
is also written, “But as many as received him (Jesus), to them gave he the power
to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” – John 1:12.
The Apostle Paul says, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to
obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of
obedience unto righteousness.” – Romans 6:16. These scriptures clearly show the
two different forces that influence man. You give your allegiance to whom you KNOW
and reap the reward from same.
The book of Daniel 11:32 says, “And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall
he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong,
and do exploits.” Here also we see two categories of people – those who do not
know God and those who do know God. Even though this text points to the end of the
age, its significance today cannot be overemphasized.
Let us pause and meditate on what it takes to know God. What does knowing God
mean? Can one really know God? I agree that it is difficult explaining in
practical terms what knowing God means. This is because God is unsearchable; yet
in His infinite wisdom and mercy He has chosen to reveal Himself to those who set
their heart to know Him. Knowing God therefore is that kind of knowledge which
involves the inner faculties of the mind, focused on God and being influenced by
Him. It can also be seen as a faith-kind of knowledge.
Is it therefore surprising to see that those who reject this knowledge are corrupt
by the devil’s flatteries? God cannot influence them because their focus is not on
Him. The scripture says, - “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because
thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no
priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget
thy children.” – Hosea 4:6. So many people have lost the spiritual rendering of
this text. They associate it to the knowledge of the physical or sense knowledge
only. What God meant here is the knowledge of Him, which is acquired by the
diligent observance of the law of God. The Word of God reveals His Person. Such
rejected people have nothing to do with His comfort.
The Prophet Jeremiah is known as the “weeping” prophet because the children of
Israel failed to walk in the knowledge of their God as revealed in the law. On
every occasion they stumbled, he wept. Look at this picture, “Oh that my head were
waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the
slain of the daughter of my people! Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging
place of way faring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! For they
be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous ,men; And they bend their tongues
like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth;
for they proceed from evil to evil, AND THEY KNOW NOT ME, saith the LORD.” –
Jeremiah 9:1-3 (Emphasis added).
The crux of the matter was that they did not know God. Instead of holding onto
God, they went after their own way. They trusted in self and what they could see.
This attitude constantly broke the heart of the Prophet and he felt like having a
lodging place in the wilderness.
Verse 23 reveals the pursuit of the people in those days, “Thus saith the LORD,
let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his
might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:” I do not think that there is any
difference between this description and the pursuit of the people of this
generation. Every one has gone his way. Because the people have misplaced
priorities, they accuse God unnecessarily. When your ultimate focus is not on God
but on your wisdom, might and wealth, you cannot enjoy the presence and comfort of
God. The devil will have you in derision.
Verse 24 reveals the expectation of God for His people – “But let him that
glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD
which exercise loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth; for in
these things I delight, saith the LORD.” Once again we come across the word “know”
but this time with understanding God.
To understand means to have accurate insight into the nature of the object in
question. In our own case, the object is God. These mean to have an accurate
evaluation of the nature of God and conduct our selves wisely and deal with Him
prudently, conforming to His image. Understanding and knowing God therefore
involve all the powers and faculties of the human mind focused on the motivated by
God. God wants His people to understand and know Him as –
a. The Lord who exercises lovingkindness.
b. The Lord who exercises judgment in the earth and
c. The Lord who exercises righteousness.

These are His delight. The result of knowing and understanding Him this way are
numerous – “the people that do know their God shall be STRONG, and DO EXPLOITS.”
One of the Old Testament characters whose life and relationship with God has been
a challenge to me is Joshua. This man was strengthened daily and his understanding
of God earned him more victories than any of his contemporaries. When God talks
about His children doing exploits, He simply means triumph in every ramification
of life. That is to say, in whatsoever you find yourself doing as a child of God,
or in whatsoever position or circumstance you find yourself, victory is assured.
It is your strength (trust) in God Almighty that does the exploits.
Joshua was born in the land of Egypt – Numbers 32:11,12 but his perception of God
was distinct from that of his fathers. This was so because, as a teenager prior to
the exodus, he did not have the slavery mentality engraved in him. Rather he came
out of Egypt seeing the miraculous works of the Almighty God. He saw the plagues
in Egypt; the Red Sea was divided and closed up again in his sight and he ate
manna and drank from the Rock. These were his understanding of God. As far as
Joshua was concerned, failure was not in God’s vocabulary.
I have been very very determining in the pursuit of my vision. So many things have
happened in my life and ministry that were pre-determined by hell to check me out
of the kingdom race. So far, the only thing that kept me strong and moving is my
understanding of God. I strongly believe that God cannot disappoint me and He will
definitely do what He says He will do. There is no king as God so there is no
higher authority than God’s. With this understanding, I face every situation
decisively. I am so consumed by the work God gave me to do that I pay no attention
to the effects of the attacks of the devil whether through man or woman, men of
God or of the devil. I always tell people that I am “unstoppable”.
Joshua’s interest in God could be seen in his attitude to the things of God. For
instance, he followed Moses to the mount of God – Exodus 24:12,13. This means as
Moses was up into the mount forty days and nights; Joshua the son of Nun was also
fasting at the bottom of the mount forty days and nights. He so much desired to
know God that he became the superintendent of the tent. The Bible remarks, “---but
his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the
tabernacle.” – Exodus 33:11. He made the tent of meeting his home. That was
incredible! He also led the battle against the Amalekites and won as Moses, Aaron
and Hur prevailed in the spirit – Exodus 17:8-16.
His faith in God was further proved when he was selected as one of the spies to
scout the promise land. Hear the report of this vibrant young man whose deep trust
in God made him taller than ten men put together. “And Joshua the son of Nun, and
Caleb the son Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their
clothes: And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying,
The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. If the
LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land
which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither
fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is
departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.” – Numbers 14:6-9.
This report was contrary to what the carnal minds saw and imagined about the
Promised Land that the whole congregation of Israel decided to stone Caleb and
Joshua but for the intervention of God – v10. The men who did know their God were
not moved, they were strong and ready to exploit the land. They were determined!
Their faith earned them visa into the promise land while the remaining faithless
generation perished in the wilderness – vv21-24. See also Numbers 32:11-13.
God reciprocated Joshua’s affection and seeing his perfect spirit, asked Moses to
consecrate him a leader in Israel. The Bible says, “And the LORD said unto Moses,
Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand
upon him; And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation;
and give him charge in their sight.” – Numbers 27:18,19. In other words, he became
the successor of Moses after his death. Joshua took over the command of the
Israeli army. The Bible has this remark about him, “And Joshua the son of Nun was
full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the
children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.” –
Deuteronomy 34:9.
As soon as he assumed leadership of Israel, he became stronger than ever because
he did know his God. God on the other hand, gave him the needed impetus that
boosted his moral. In Joshua 1:1-9, God reaffirmed His promises; He promised
Joshua of His continuous presence – “--- as I was with Moses, so I will be with
thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Three times in this text God
commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous because “they that know their God
shall be strong and do exploits.”
Joshua did not waste any time as he swung into action, as he “commanded the
officers of the people, saying, Pass through the host, and command the people,
saying, Prepare ye victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan,
to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth thee to possess it.”
– vv10, 11. This is what God meant by doing exploits. As far as Joshua was
concerned the land is as good as taken. To him, you must “go in to possess the
land, which the LORD your God giveth thee to possess it.” If you know your God,
you must be strong enough to call those things, which were not as though they are,
and to go in and possess your possessions from the dirty hands of the devil. “Fear
not” God says, “be courageous.” You can make it in life! The devil has cheated you
enough. Today arise and “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.”- II
Timothy 2:1
One day a young man and his fiancée came to see me in the church. I have not seen
them before and upon enquiry they said a member of our church directed them on how
to see me. Guess what was their problem. HIV positive, yes! They were HIV
positive. The young man’s report form read, HIV Antibody Detected (POSITIVE) by
determine (EIA). They looked dejected and frustrated but I gave them the goodnews
of hope and abundant life in Christ Jesus.
We prayed together and they left. After some months they went for another routine
check and the result was the same. When they came back to me with the result, I
could see some difference in their disposition so I quickly asked, “do you accept
the doctor’s report? “No sir!” they replied. “You told us that God has healed us
and that is the report we accept.” They affirmed. The young lady was ready for the
marriage so was the young man. It was a challenge. We fasted and prayed again. As
they were going, I collected the report from them and placed it before the good
God of all comfort.
To act on their faith, they went ahead and printed their wedding invitation cards
and bought the necessary things for the wedding. A few days to the wedding they
went for another routine check and this time, it was negative; yes, you heard me
right, NEGATIVE! The blood of Jesus Christ washed them clean. Hallelujah! Joshua
said “go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God, giveth thee to possess
it.” You must learn to “call those things which are not as though they were”. This
is God’s language. Today they are happily married and enjoying their new life in
Christ Jesus.
What God did in the first chapter of the book of Joshua was to give him a success
formula. Along the line Joshua met with different kinds of difficulties. But the
goodnews is that Joshua finally succeeded in his ministry or God-given assignment.
At the end, he shared the same success formular with the children of Israel. In
other words, he comforted the children of Israel with the same comfort God
comforted him in the beginning. Let us consider carefully these verses, “But
cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day. For the LORD hath
driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath
been able to stand before you unto this day. One man of you shall chase a
thousand: for the LORD your God; he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath
promised you. Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your
God. --- And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in
all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the
good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass
unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.” – Joshua 23:8-11,14. Compare
this with Joshua 1:1-9.
Have a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. Try your best to maintain a cordial
relationship with God and you will smile at last. He says, “For I know the
thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of
evil, to evil, to give you an expected end.” – Jeremiah 29:11.

CHAPTER THREE

BEING CONFIDENT OF THIS

Experience has taught me never to doubt God’s word. In some few cases where the
word of God has not been fulfilled in my life, I have traced it to my inability to
keep His covenant. The word of God has an innate ability for growth and therefore
cannot fail. God’s word is infallible! For the past twenty-one years, I have
proved the faithfulness of God, so I can boldly say God is worthy of my
confidence.
After the Muslims’ attack in 1996, our ministry was almost paralysed. In 1998 God
gave me His sure word of promise concerning a more befitting place of worship. It
was like a dream yet I strongly believed the words I heard from Him. Before the
close of the same year, a miracle that changed the story of our ministry happened.
Today, God has blessed us with a wonderful church building to the glory of His
name. If I had not trained myself to have confidence in God’s word, the devil
would have messed me up with his fallacy.
As a young boy who grew up to see the miraculous works of God and above all,
having not noticed a circumstance where God failed in His word, Joshua remained
steadfast until he established the people of Israel in the promised land. Getting
to the end of his life and ministry, he said, “And if it seem evil unto you to
save the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your
fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE, WE WILL SERVE THE
LORD.” – Joshua 24:15 (Emphasis added). The thing that kept Joshua was the
confidence he had in God’s word. God had told him that “There shall not any man be
able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will
be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” – Joshua 1:5. I believe
these words kept ringing in the heart of Joshua till he gave up the ghost.
Remember I said that I want to share with you the comfort of God that has kept me
thus far in the faith and ministry. Confidence in the word of God has been the
secret. When God called me into the ministry, I heard the same words of comfort
and encouragement – “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” I have confidence in
these words and since I answered the call, I have suffered untold hardship yet
unmoved because I know fully well that He will never fail me. I took time to study
His relationship with men of faith who lived before me and I discovered that he
did not disappoint any of them. So I believe He will not disappoint me.
What was your conviction the day you gave your life to Jesus Christ as your Lord
and Saviour? Did you hear the Spirit of God ministering something to you? Jog your
mind, remember that thing quickly and hold unto it. Have confidence that He who
spoke to you will bring to pass that which He has spoken concerning you. In any
circumstance you find yourself, remember His word to you.
The same applies to the minister of the gospel. Dear man of God, do you want to
quit because you think you cannot make it in the ministry? Every man God calls, He
gives a mission. What did He tell you the day He called you? Hold unto that. Have
confidence in His word. The Bible says, “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also
will do it.” - I Thessalonians 5:24. The mistake most people make at times is that
they want to do it by their own power. No! We are just instruments in the hands of
the Almighty God. Can any instrument execute work on its own accord? Of course no!
So, when you relax and take courage in the Lord, He does His work through you.
Think about men like Gideon who slew the Midianites with only three hundred
soldiers with trumpets and lamps in pitchers – See Judges 7:15-23. Gideon felt
inadequate yet God encouraged him in his “inadequacy” and used him mightily
because he had confidence in the word of God. The first day God met with him, the
Bible says, “And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The
LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. And the LORD looked upon him, and
said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the
Midianites: have I not sent thee?” – Judges 6:12,14. Gideon had this confidence –
God was with him. (For more details on the exploits of Gideon, get my book titled,
“THE SWORD OF THY EXCELLENCY”).
When all the soldiers of Israel including Saul their king lost the confidence they
had in God, young David taught them incredible lesson on confidence. He visited
his brothers in the battlefield and heard the Philistine champion defying the
armies of Israel. The account is recorded in I Samuel chapter 17.
For forty days the Philistine champion Goliath requested that an Israeli champion
should fight with him and the winner shall be king over the other. He defied the
host of Israel. Saul and his soldiers were tormented daily with fear. The Bible
says, “When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were
dismayed, and greatly afraid.” – v11. In one of such days when the Philistine
champion was on his usual boasting, the boy David visited and when he heard the
words of the champion enquired, “What shall be done to the man that killeth this
Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? For who is this
uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” –
v26.
Though his elder brothers scolded him and tried to discourage him, David was
determined to face the Philistine champion. As his words were rehearsed before
king Saul, he sent for David. When David met with Saul, he said, “Let no man’s
heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” –
v32. Did you see how God comforts His people? “Let no man’s heart fail, God is in
control.” Again, David was faced with another discouragement – “And Saul said to
David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou
art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” – v33. David could not be
persuaded otherwise. He had a testimony and a wonderful one for that matter. He
told the king how God delivered him out of the paw of lion and bear. Finally he
said, “--- moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and
out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.
And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.” – v37.
David had such confidence in God who delivered him from the paws of the lion and
bear so the Philistine champion posed no threat to him. Think back now and you
will remember one miracle God gave you on a platter of gold. If God did that, He
will do more, only have confidence in Him.
That testimony gave David another victory as he slew the Philistine champion. What
the armies of Israel could not do for forty days, God did it in a few minutes
through an instrument that had confidence in Him. Every testimony gives birth to
another as you walk in its light. Read the account of David’s victory over Goliath
in the remaining verses.
The Lord Jesus Christ is our Model in all things. I have discovered that He had
confidence in Himself. The Blessed Trinity from creation exhibited perfect
confidence and faith in His works for us to emulate. He spoke the universe into
existence. Every miracle he performed was unique. In fact, He called the
“miracles” His “works”. To the natural man the works of the Creator-Redeemer are
miracles but to Him they are His normal works.
If you are born again, have you ever thought about who you were before Jesus came
into your life? May be you have not. The Apostle Paul says, “Wherefore remember,
that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by
that which is called circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye
were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers
from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:” –
Ephesians 2:11,12. That was our condition – “having no hope, and without God in
the world.” “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh
by the blood of Christ.” – v 13. Christ’s ultimate miracle for you is your
salvation. He did not save you for nothing. There is a purpose for your salvation.
The testimony of your salvation can give birth to millions of other testimonies.
That very day you got saved God began a new work in you. The Scripture therefore
says, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in
you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6.
Now you can understand fully what I am writing to you about. God began a good work
in you by saving you. He is committed to perfecting you until the day Jesus Christ
will be revealed from heaven. He cannot abandon you on the way. He will surely
take you to the end.
BE CONFIDENT!
CHAPTER FOUR

THE GREAT COMFORTER

When our first parents disobeyed God by their own volition, they received a
capital punishment of expulsion from the beautiful Garden of Eden. They were
separated from God. I believe that Adam regretted his action seeing the
consequence but it was too late, for there was no room for a second chance. The
glory of God had departed not to return in the shortest time possible.
As I examined carefully the comforting nature of God, I discovered that His
nature is not like a habit or character which some of us build up and make part of
us in the process of time. I discovered that the nature of God is God Himself.
That is, His nature made me to know Him as God. God did not develop His nature
rather His nature unfolds Him.
I see the God of all comfort manifesting Himself in the Eden’s scene. “God
is love” – I John 4:8,16. And not “love is God”. That is why His love is
unconditional. He did not love Adam because Adam was so pure; He loved him because
he was His creature. So when Adam fell from glory, God still loved him but hated
the evil nature He found in Adam. God felt the absence of Adam in the garden
though his expulsion was expedient. God knew that Adam would one day regret his
action and die of self-pity so, God decided to comfort him and input hope in
mankind.
Have you ever considered the immediate relief the garden judgment had on
Adam and his wife apart from its long-term implication? Look at it closely again,
“And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art
cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt
thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity
between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy
head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” – Genesis 3:14,15. Oh, I see the God of all
comfort in this judgment. At last, in their distress, Adam and his wife could give
little sigh of relief. They could have hope when the devil’s plan was to
annihilate and banish them from the face of the earth and their Creator. God seems
to say, “Well, Adam, I understand the pain of your heart. You will live in that
state but I will create enmity between you and the devil, which caused you to
fall. You will multiply as I commanded and one of your seeds will finally destroy
the devil. So be hopeful in this.” I could hear Eve saying to Adam, - “My husband,
our God must be gracious. Now let us trust Him wholeheartedly seeing the devil has
deceived us. Let us hope that one day as God has said, our seed will crush the
head of the serpent.” They were comforted.
From the Hebrew version we understand that the word “Rosh” which was
translated “head” in Genesis 1:15 means “Headship”. It is not the literal head of
the serpent that the seed of the woman will crush but the headship or authority of
the serpent. You see, what is in contention even in the world today is, who has
the authority over whom. God is saying that the seed of the woman will destroy the
authority of the devil and you and me need to understand that clearly. That was
exactly what happened on the cross of Calvary.
In the New Testament, the Greek equivalent of “Rosh” is used when Jesus
said, “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power
to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and
nothing shall by any means hurt you.” – Luke 10:18,19. The word translated “power”
is “exulsia” which means authority. “Dunamis” is the Greek word for power. What we
have over the devil is “AUTHORITY”. Friend, whosoever that has the authority the
same has the power.
What a consolation! But that was not all, God still considered the outfit of
Adam and his wife. The Bible says, “--- they knew that they were naked; and they
sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” – Genesis 3:7. Oh, Adam,
created in the image of God. How could fig leaves cover their shame? The leaves
will wither the following day and their shame will be revealed again. How long
would Adam have continued in sewing fig leaves for the same purpose? God looked at
them with pity and in order to comfort them, the Bible says, “Unto Adam also and
to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” – v21. Do you
think that Adam and his wife were more comfortable in this outfit? If you think
so, then, you have begun to understand the God of all comfort.
God offered the first sacrifice for the lost man. I believe the animal that
was killed for the sake of the Adams was a lamb – a type of Jesus Christ the Lamb
of God slain for the sins of the world. (For a detailed account of the Lamb, read
the book titled- “CHRIST OUR PASSOVER LAMB” by the same author).
God judges the intents of your heart. He knows the desires of your heart. Even
though He does not justify sin, once your desire is to serve God, He makes His
grace abundant for you to live above sin. “The blood of Jesus Christ his son
cleanseth us from all sin.” – I John 1:7. He knows the devil is always by the
corner, but His word says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist devil, and
he will flee from you.” – James 4:7. The degree of your submission to God
guarantees your victory over Satan, sin and the world.
All through the pages of the Old Testament, the God of all comfort dealt
with His people accordingly. Without His comfort, the Patriarchs would not have
maintained their faith. How could Moses have led the children of Israel through
the wilderness without the comfort of God? The people themselves (though at times
stiff-necked) fought and won battles as God encouraged and comforted them in the
wilderness by His divine provisions and protection.
David, the best king in the Israeli’s history lived through the comfort of
God. On several occasions he was faced with discouragements. There were battles to
fight: his predecessor sought to kill him; his own son at a point sought his life;
there were enemies from inside and outside. David encouraged himself in the Lord.
Have you taken time to meditate on his 23rd Psalm? Read the verses of that Psalm
meditatively, putting yourself in the position of David then, you will see the God
I am trying to describe to you. Somewhere else David says, Thou shalt increase my
greatness, and comfort me on every side. I will also praise thee with the
psaltery, even thy truth, O my God; unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou
Holy One of Israel. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my
soul, which thou hast redeemed. My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all
the daylong: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek
my hurt.” – Psalm 71:21-24.
The Lord Jesus Christ came into the world to preach the gospel to the poor;
to heal the broken-hearted; to preach deliverance to the captives; to give sight
to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable
year of the Lord. – Luke 4:18,19. He accomplished these tasks. From the confused
celebrant whose wine finished unexpectedly at Cana of Galilee to the Priest’s
attendant whose ear He fixed back in the garden of Gethsemane, the God of all
comfort unfolded Himself in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Every miracle
Jesus performed brought with it hopes to the recipients. His works were proof of
His Deity. Consider this miracle recorded in the book of Luke 7:11-17. The only
son of a widow in the city of Nain was dead and the people were carrying the
corpse for burial outside the city when suddenly, Jesus Christ, the Author of life
met with them at the gate of the city. The ONLY son of a WIDOW! Her only hope in
life! Oh, how she wept for misery. But, “when the Lord saw her, he had compassion
on her, and said unto her, WEEP NOT.” – v13. His compassion and words of comfort
were translated into reality as “He came and touched the bier: and they that bare
him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was
dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.” – vv14, 15.
The Author of life has once again proved Himself in the city of Nain. A widow had
experienced the comfort of the God of all comfort. Look at the Bible’s remark of
the reaction of the people – “And there came a fear on all: and they glorified
God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, THAT GOD HATH VISITED
HIS PEOPLE.” – v16 (Emphasis mine).
Imagine such a clear expression of amazement. “God hath visited his people”.
His works were so distinct and marvelous that when the people of His day saw the
miracles they “were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things
well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.”- Mark 7:37. I love
to hear such words about my LORD – “He hath done all things well.”
Today, Jesus Christ is no longer physically here but His Spirit is. Before
His glorification He said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray
the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you
for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it
seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and
shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you,” – John
14:16-18. It is through His Spirit that God is constantly comforting His people
today as always.
Sincerely, all the volumes in the world put together will not be enough to
record this nature of the Blessed Trinity, which has kept me in the faith and
ministry. The Holy Spirit will accomplish the plans of God in your life. It is my
prayer that He will use the little that I have shared with you in this book to
build and establish you firmly in times of grief, troubles and trials of this
life.
Finally, I would like to leave you with this text: “There hath no temptation
taken you but such as is common to man: but GOD IS FAITHFUL, who will not suffer
you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make
a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” – I Corinthians 10:13.
If you are not born-again, i.e. if you have not accepted the Lord Jesus
Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have no part in this matter. You are without
the God of all Comfort in this world. If you want to enjoy the comfort and
encouragement of the Lord, you must be a member of His family. To do so, you must
accept the Lord Jesus Christ NOW into your life. Call upon Him right now in
prayer. Confess Him as Lord and Saviour. He is right there by your side and He
will greatly pardon.

Pray this way-

Heavenly Father, I am sorry for my sins. I have decided not to commit iniquity
again so I ask for your grace. I believe that Jesus Christ, your Only begotten Son
died for my sins on the cross of Calvary and on the third day He rose from the
dead for my justification. I enthrone Him today the King over my life. Write
therefore my name in your book of life and deliver me from eternal condemnation.
I believe with all my heart and confess with my mouth today that Jesus
Christ is my Lord and Saviour.
Thank you Father for saving me.
