Emily Justice MEDT 6461 Budget Spring 2011 Proposed Three-Year Budget for 2011-2012 / 2012-2013 /2013-2014 Statement

of needs: A needs assessment survey was given to teachers, students, and parents to determine how best to spend money in the media center. Also, Georgia Performance Standards were taken into consideration. Another major factor in the drafting of the three year budget was CRCT testing. Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year students will be expected to pass the science portion of the test, and the same is true for social studies beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. Based on this data, it was determined the focus for the next three years will be on nonfiction that supports both science and social studies curriculums for all grades. This includes biographies on key figures studied in these areas. 2011 Equipment Digital Camera Video Camera Books Fiction Non-Fiction Biographies Reference Professional Online Resources AV Materials DVDs CDs Audio Books $200.24 $200.24 2012 $200.24 $200.24 2013 $200.24 $200.24 Total $600.72 $600.72

Justification: The focus for this three-year budget is non-fiction books that support all grade levels Georgia Performance Standards in science and social studies. This is important for our school because in the coming years these areas will begin to count on the CRCT. The non-fiction section needs to be updated to support this change, and support student achievement. Equipment: The money allocated for equipment will go to maintain and replace (if necessary) all digital cameras and video cameras. Video cameras are used on a daily basis to produce the morning news broadcast, and the commercials that accompany that broadcast. Teachers may check out cameras for use in the classroom, so it is important to keep this equipment in excellent working order. Per county policy no money can be spent to replace projector bulbs in the classrooms. Each classroom has a ceiling mounted projector and Promethean Board. Books: The majority of the money allocated for books will be put towards science and social studies non-fiction books that support the curriculum. This is an area of the collection that needs updating due to upcoming new standards for the CRCT. Biographies will also be purchased that support the science and social studies curriculum. The next largest amount is allocated to fiction books. This section is maintained on a 2

E. Justice yearly basis. The GPSs require students to read one million words a year, so fiction is a big part of that standard. Since Cobb County requires such an extensive selection of online reference materials, the only reference materials purchased will be a class set of yearly almanacs. Professional books for teachers and professional magazines will also be purchased with this money. Online Resources: Cobb County School District requires each media center give $1200 to maintain the Cobb Virtual Library. This money is taken from the original amount of each budget. The media specialist cannot opt out of this expense (P. Creighton, Personal Communication, February 15, 2011). AV Materials: The money allocated in this section will go to purchase DVDs that support the curriculum. Teacher request will be taken into consideration when purchases are made. CDs will be purchased for use in the classroom. Using songs in the learning process is a great way to promote learning in a Title I school. The CDs will also be used to make commercials for the news broadcast. Audio books will be purchased in the form of playaways. These compact audio books resemble an iPod. Teachers may check out up to 3 to be used in the classroom for 2 weeks. Student may also use playaways in the media center. Professional Learning: A minimal amount of money has been allocated for professional learning so more can be spent on materials that promote student achievement. Cobb County allows up to $300 be spent each year on conferences. The county offers enough free professional development classes each year to make it possible not to spend media money for this matter (P. Creighton, Personal Communication, February 15, 2011).

E. Justice Supplies: Money allocated to this section will go to purchasing general supplies for the daily functioning of the media center, such as barcodes, spine labels, and date due slips. Money will also be spent on supplies to repair books and other materials, such as book tape, book glue, etc. According to the Cobb County Library Media Education Departments guidelines, this money cannot be spent on general office supplies. Those items must be purchased out of local funds (Cobb County School District Library Media Education Department, 2010).
