All of Us - #567 by Fr. Larry Two Spiritual Heroes Our Church's liturgical calendar acknowledges two great saints this week, St. Therese "the Child of Jesus," on Monday, October 1st, and St. Francis of Assisi on Thursday, October 4th. The way they lived out their faith and trust in God continues to be a wonderful inspiration for us. Their strong relationship with Jesus was truly evident in the commitments and choices they made that determined how they wanted to live their simple but holy lives. In many ways we can identify with their personal struggles and how their faith helped to give them strength and perseverance. St. Therese suffered many hardships in her life. She was physically weak and psychologically vulnerable. Her mother died of breast cancer when she was four. She joined the Carmelite convent at the age of 15 after a long battle against the superior who insisted that 16, or even 21, would be a more sensible age. She wrestled with tuberculosis which ended up taking her life at the young age of 24. St. Therese could easily be the patron saint for the "random acts of kindness" movement. Her spiritual writings, entitled The Little Way, means taking God at God's word and letting God's love for us wash away our sins and imperfections. We can't all hug lepers or go off and become missionaries and martyrs in foreign lands. But we all do have daily opportunities for grace. Some of them may be too small to see, but the more we love God, the more we will see them. If we can't advance to Heaven in giant strides, we can do it in tiny steps. She showed us how our weakness is no excuse for mediocrity. Our parish will celebrate a very simple three day novena dedicated to St. Therese starting on Monday, October 1st at 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM. This simple form of prayer can be a great way to begin your busy day. October 4th is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. I sense he was a guy you didn't want to aggravate. He was the son of a prosperous cloth merchant. When his father objected to having his goods sold without his consent to pay for the restoration of a church, the bishop commanded Francis to repay the money. He did. He also

renounced his father and gave back everything he ever had been given, even his garments. He then began a life of poverty, living by begging and even then only accepting the worst food that people had to give. He preached to all about the love of God and the love of the created world. Having renounced everything, he celebrated everything he received, or saw or heard as a gift. Francis wore an old brown garment that he begged from a peasant. He tied a string around the middle for a belt. This eventually became the Franciscan habit. Ten years later, 5,000 men were wearing it as a sign that they too were part of the Franciscan Order and simple way of life. On Saturday, October 6th, we will celebrate our annual Pet Blessing at 8:00 AM on the front steps of the church. Fr. Marcin, who is an animal lover himself, will be on hand with holy water and The Book of Blessings. Last year the German shepherds were barking up a storm. It looked like they didn't have breakfast. Good luck Fr. Marcin! Can You Help The Poor? In the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, this weekend an appeal is being made as part of an invitation to help the poor and homeless this coming winter. We welcome to our parish, Doreen Dabney, who is the Pastoral Associate at St. Alphonsus Church here in Lemont. At our Masses she will be explaining the PADS program (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) located in Palos that offers overnight housing for the poor and is in need of volunteers to work particular shifts during the week. I have worked the PADS program in the past and found it to be a very rewarding and humbling experience. There are various shifts which make it easy to volunteer. Also, the shelves in our Helping Hands food pantry are empty. I went down to take a look the other day and all I saw was a can of spaghettio's and a jar of peanut butter. No soup. No cereal. No veggies. Note that on the first Sunday of the month, we collect food for the pantry that currently is helping more than a dozen families here in Lemont. You can bring your nonperishable items to church, or to the rectory, during the

week. You will find Helping Hands shopping bags in the back of church that you can take home and use the next time you go to the store. Whatever you can donate is greatly appreciated. Coming Home Last week I met a parishioner from St. Alphonsus. She asked me, "Father, your church must be done, right?" I said, "Yes, we have been back in church for several Sundays now. It's nice. Have you seen it?" She said, "No. I will have to stop by and take a look." Then she followed up with, "I could tell you must have been back in church." "How so?" I asked. "Well, I hate to tell you this, Father, but our Sunday attendance is noticeably down." "Maybe it was the Bears game at noon?" I hoped. If you have been away from St. Cyril's over the summer during our time of construction, welcome home. And, good luck on Monday night. Hopefully the game wont end with a Hail Mary pass.

Welcome to SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish

SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish United in Faith Religious Education News By Trish Nickleski, D.R.E. Dear Parents,

September 30, 2012

There is NO RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES on Sunday, October 7th or Monday, October 8th. But there IS class on Wednesday, October 10th because the Wednesday session has Halloween off this month. Registrations for religious education classes for this school year MUST be turned in as soon as possible!! If you have not already registered your children for religious education classes you must do so NOW by calling the religious education office at (630) 257-9314. For your information the following are requirements for the religious education program: 1. You must be a registered supporting parishioner to have a child in the religious education program. If you are not currently a registered parishioner and are planning on enrolling a student for the Fall please take care of registering for the parish now so it does not hold up your registration. 2. In order for your child to make their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in second grade they must complete first grade. 3. In order for your child to make their Confirmation in 8th grade they must complete grades 3 through 7. 4. If you are transferring from another religious education program I must have a transfer form from your old parish stating what grades your child has completed. 5. Everest Academy, Noonan Academy, Kingswood Academy, home schooled students and anyone else who attend a non-archdiocesan school who wish to make their First Holy Communion or Confirmation at St. Cyrils are required to register for the Religious Education Program for the second and eighth grade years.

Thursday, October 4th marks the end of the grading period for our first progress reports. This is the perfect time to look closely at how your child is progressing. Hopefully you have been following graded assignments on TeacherEase. Feel free to contact the teacher in the event you have any questions regarding your childs work. Your child will experience more success if we can identify and work together on problems in a timely fashion. On September 13th, the girls from our 6th, 7th and 8th grades had the opportunity to view the documentary, Finding Kind. This very moving film dealt with the subject of girls bullying other girls. It was made by two friends who traveled together around the country talking to both girls who had been bullied, and girls who had been the bullies. Its ending message was strong, but simple we need to find ways to be kind! Thank you to Mrs. Chris Labuda and Mrs. Carmel Dovin for championing the project. Just a reminder, we are off from school on Friday, October 5th. Teachers will be attending in-service on prayer opportunities within the classroom. We are also off on the 8th for Columbus Day. Mrs. S. Tkachuk Principal

The Holy Name Society Men's Club will be sponsoring a clothing drive to benefit the St. Vincent DePaul Society. The collection will be held on October 27th and 28th, 2012 following each Mass at St Cyril's. We hope you can begin collecting your clothing for this worthwhile society. Donations will need to be boxed in order to be accepted.

Reminder About Background Checks and Protecting Gods Children Workshops Please remember that the Archdiocese of Chicago is requiring all volunteers who work with children in our parish, parish school, school sports program and religious education program to go through a background check and attend the Protecting Gods Children workshop. The background check and the workshop are two separate things and are found at two different websites. Several of these workshops are being held at nearby parishes over the summer and in the fall. The dates and times are listed below. Please remember that you need to register online at www.virtus.org before attending the workshop. If you cannot make one of these workshops then you will need to go to a different parish than the ones listed below to attend the workshop. A complete listing of the different sites for these workshops can be found at the VIRTUS website. If you have any questions or would like a packet of information to help you register for the background check and the workshop please call Trish Nickleski at 630-257-9314. St. George, Tinley Park 10/9/12 at 6:30 PM Our Lady of the Woods, Orland Park 10/20/12 at 9:00 AM Please note that if you do not complete the above requirements by October 31st you will not be allowed to volunteer with children at the school and the religious education program. This also includes all who volunteer in the sports program at the parish school. This is a requirement of the Archdiocese and all parishes are being required to have their volunteers complete these two requirements along with paper work that can be obtained by contacting your program coordinator or calling Trish in the Religious Education office at (630) 257-9314.

We conclude the quiz from the Bishops website. If you missed any weeks questions or answers please see our bulletin online or the usccb.org website. 18. Torture is intrinsically evil. A) True B) False 19. According to a study released in the September 2011 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology, what percentage of practicing ob/gyns performs abortions? A) 14%; B) 25% B) 50%; D) 70% 20. Children raised in intact married families are less likely to: A) Be physically and sexually abused B) Use drugs or alcohol C) Become pregnant/impregnate someone as a teenager D) All of the above. 18. Answer: A) True. Torture is an intrinsic evil because it is a violation of the dignity of the human person, who is made in the image and likeness of God. Even those who may have done evil never shed their intrinsic dignity. 19. Answer: A) 14%. According to a study released in the September 2011 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the journal of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 14% of practicing ob/gyns perform abortions 20. Answer: D) All of the above. Social science research continues to affirm the benefits children receive by being raised by their own married mother and father, each of whom brings unique gifts to the shared task of parenting, that is, mothering and fathering. Here's an overview of pertinent research and more background on the Church's teaching about the importance of fathers and mothers. (see usccb.org) Hope this has been helpful. It is certainly interesting! ~Doreen Dabney Pastoral Associate, St. Alphonsus

Who are the people who join the Catholic Church today? You or someone you know may be in one of the following life situations: Young people who are engaged to marry Catholics want to share not only their lives and values, but also their faith. Young parents who are expecting their first born or have children starting school often find that this is the time to join a faith community that will help them find God in their lives and establish moral values in their family. People who are baptized either in the Catholic faith or another Christian religion, but were not brought up or educated in the religion. As the years go by, they may seek to return to their Christian roots. People from all backgrounds that are seeking God in their liveslooking for answers to life and death questions. The Catholic Church offers great traditions of Scripture, the worship of God in vibrant liturgies, intellectual studies of theology, joyful celebrations through the Sacraments, care for the sick and the dying and love and hope for the poor of the world. How Does a Person Become Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process by which the Catholic Church welcomes new members into its communal life. The RCIA is a living experience of the Church, and not just a series of classes which teach knowledge about the Church. Although there is instruction in the facts of the faith, instruction is but one part of a larger experience of knowing and sharing with other members of the Church. Who is RCIA for? It is for non-Christian men and women; for Christians that are not Catholic; for Catholics who are baptized, but have no religious training. How Can I Join? The Catholic churches in Lemont work together in this experience. Contact Fr. Larry or Doreen at (630) 2572414 and watch the bulletins for further details. New Group Now Forming for Fall

St. Therese of Lisieux and Blessed Louis and Zelie Martin

October 1st is the feast day of St. Therese of Lisieux. Therese Martin, was born at Alenon, France on Jan. 2, 1873. Her parents were Louis Martin and Zlie Gurin. Louis was a watchmaker and Zelie a lace maker. They had nine children, four of whom died in their youth. Their five remaining daughters all entered religious life. Therese was the youngest and when she was four her mother died of breast cancer. Her father then moved his family to Lisieux, France, where Therese grew up and attended school. Following the death of her mother, Thrse suffered from a serious illness, but was healed through the intercession of Our Lady of Victories, which she herself described as the smile of Our Lady. With the reception of her First Communion, Jesus in the Eucharist became the center of her life. Therese wanted to became a contemplative like her sisters who where in the Carmel of Lisieux, but was not permitted to do so because she was only fifteen. During an audience with Pope Leo XIII in 1887, she asked the Holy Father to be able to enter the convent, and in April of 1888, she entered the Carmel of Lisieux. She received the habit the following year and the name, Sister Therese of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face. In Carmel she followed the way of life outlined by St. Teresa of Avila and faithfully served the community with the responsibilities entrusted to her. For Thrse, being a religious meant being a bride of Jesus and a mother of souls. She grew in sanctity, was inspired by the Gospels, and placed love at the center of everything. Therese wrote several manuscripts and Pope Benedict said her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, is a marvelous story of Love, told with such authenticity, simplicity and freshnessa Love that filled Thrses whole life, from childhood to death. This Love has a Face, it has a Name, it is Jesus! Therese died on Sept. 30, 1897 at the age of 24. As her health declined she accepted her suffering with patience until the moment of her death. She said, "I am not dying, I am entering life" and her last words were, "My God, I love you!" Therese was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925 and was later proclaimed a Universal Patron of the Missions along with St. Francis Xavier. In 1997, John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church for her wisdom and spiritual teaching. Therese is known as the Little Flower because she loved nature and saw Gods presence everywhere. She considered herself a little flower of Jesus because she was like a simple wild flower, hidden in the forest, but blooming and giving glory to God where she was planted. Pope Benedict in speaking of St. Therese said, we must be able to repeat to the Lord every day that we want to live of love for him and for others, to learn at the school of the saints to love authentically and totally. Thrse is one of the little ones of the Gospel who let themselves be led by God to the depths of his Mystery. With humility and charity, faith and hope, Thrse continually entered the heart of Sacred Scripture which contains the Mystery of Christ. Louis and Zelie Martin, the parents of St. Therese, were beatified as a couple in October 2008 in Lisieux, at the Basilica dedicated to their daughter, St. Therese. They are the first parents of a saint to be beatified, are the first spouses in the history of the Church to be proposed for sainthood as a couple, and only the second couple to be beatified together. Louis and Zelie each had a career, were devout, saw Christ in the poor and worked for a just society. They faced the challenges that families have today, as well as tragedies and struggles. During the Franco-Prussian war they housed soldiers in their home, four of their nine children died, and Zelie died at 46 from breast cancer. After the death of his wife, Louis was a single parent of five daughters and later developed a brain disorder. Louis and Zelie Martin are an inspiration for married and family life today.
