About Helping Hands?

Helping Hands is a registered social service movement, established about a year ago with the theme Action First targeting the neighbourhood on Dunuwila Road. Later, it expanded to cover entire Akurana and its suburbs. The main objective of Helping Hands is to assess the urgent needs of the people and helping them mainly with their basic needs covering shelter, education, water, sanitation etc. Further, it envisaged especially the mobilization of youth, in such noble/meritorious activities, rather than wasting their valuable time on unproductive, un-Islamic issues.

Our progress so far.. Projects implemented

The Funds
We are also pleased to inform you that, within a short period of its existence, Helping Hands, had so far implemented projects worth approximately Rs 1.5 million. The funds for the projects carried out by the organization, come/came from well-wishers in the area and elsewhere. Helping Hands is also has the services of around fifty trustworthy young members, who contribute wholeheartedly and with dedication and commitment in implementing the projects. This includes financial assistance too from them. Members of the organization spend their own money too for the services. However, the needs of the people seem to be increasing day by day, which necessitates more funds to meet the requirements.

Needs are Focused, Not the Communities

The service activities organized by the Helping Hands are purely focused only on the needs of people, not considering their cast, community or religion. Thus the services are offered to Muslims, Buddhists, Christians and Hindus in the area, who are in need. This has created a good relationship and better understanding between the non-Muslims and Muslims, especially at a time, when the tension between communities in the island is escalating.

Donation towards a meritorious project "Free Water Supply for the needy"
The Project
Due to the prevailing drought, a well in a village in Akurana, which was used to supply water continuously for last 18 years, had dried up completely. The situation is getting worse day by day making the people struggling even, to find water for their day to day drinking purposes. It is learnt that, only about 35% of the people in Akurana benefit from the Government Water Supply, whereas the remaining 65%, approximately, suffer without even drinking water. One might have observed the wells and the river in Akurana, which were used by the people for their needs, drying up few months back. We could see people standing in very long queues, to collect water, may be a single pot or bucket full of water, for their drinking needs. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Helping Hands a Social Movement in Akurana, had taken the bold initiative to provide water free of charge, to the people in need, covering areas such as Pangollamada, Thalagahakanda, Uggala, Malwanahinna, Heepitiya, Dunuwila, Uda-deegala, Deegahawathura, Mawathupola, Zahiradeniya, Alawathugoda, Malgamandeniya, Doragamuwa, Galadeniya etc. irrespective of the cast, religion, community etc., they belong to. Some areas outside Akurana will also benefit from this project. The suffering of people in the drought affected areas cannot be expressed in words, and as the support seems the most vital need and it needs to be given the highest priority. As per the plan, three trucks, each carrying 4000 liters of water, visit the areas three times a day on a regular basis. The cost incurred for the above service, including rent for truck, payment for water (which is bought from Polgolla) and other related expenses, comes to around Rs.8,000/= per day for a truck. The number of truck loads too (from the present three) need to be increased, to serve more people in need.

Helping Hands has already spent Rs. 262519.00 during the last twenty days (Until 01st of October 2012), towards this. They would appreciate financial assistance from well-wishers, to continue this project as the need keeps on increasing every passing day. May the Almighty reward you for your generous contribution towards this worthy cause and bless your wealth.
