Tenova HYL
Direct Reduction Plants DRI Hot Feeding System

In 1997 Tenova HYL once again pioneered the industry with the startup of its pneumatic transport system.. This system named HYTEMP - was the first of its kind to be able to supply hot DRI to an EAF meltshop. High Carbon DRI delivered by the HYTEMP System for hot feeding DRI to the meltshop, brings the advantages of the thermal energy from the reduction furnace, as well as, the unique high carbon content of our DRI product directly to the meltshop for improved economy and steel quality. The HYL HYTEMP System connects the DR plant discharge to the meltshop via a pneumatic transport pipe which delivers hot, high carbon DRI to the EAF. In operation since 1997, this system has proven to be completely reliable and has transported millions of tons of hot DRI with absolutely no incidents. To date, no pipe sections or equipment have had to be changed due to wear or failure, thus making the HYTEMP virtually maintenance-free.

The system operates by using a transport gas (either inert gas or the process gas itself) to carry the hot DRI through a pneumatic pipe to a holding bin above the electric furnace. The transport gas is removed from the circuit and recycled back to the DR plant and the hot DRI is charged to the holding bin for continuous feeding to the EAF. Key advantages of this technology, fully proven in over a decade of operation, include: Delivery of hot (650 C) high carbon DRI to the E AF significantly reducing power requirements for melting, thus lowering tap-to-tap times The carbon content of the hot DRI (avg. 3.8%) provides chemical energy for an EAF using oxygen practice, the yield is 100% vs. only 40% for carbon additions in the conventional practice. No down time due to maintenance of the transport system. Since it is not a mechanical system, there is no wear associated with dust or hot material. The fine particles from the DR shaft furnace are carried with the pelletized material and cushion the transport line. These fines are then injected into the hot metal interface along with the pelletized DRI, increasing the yield.
