Monster Genetics Lab - 30 points

Name____________________________ Date_________ Period_________ Background: Zandor is an Earth-like planet located in another solar system in another galaxy some 6.2 billion light years away. One of the creatures that inhabits this planet is called the Kremulak (Monstrousitus sargii). Kremulaks reproduce sexually and have diploid body cells and haploid gametes. Kremulaks are fierce predators and have many adaptations that allow them to take down prey and defend themselves from any creature bold enough to attack them. Kremulaks have variability in many of their traits but some traits are common to all members of the species. All normal, healthy Kremulaks have 6 legs, 3 eyes, 2 pairs of ears, 1 mouth, and 6 fingers/toes. Directions: Students will work in pairs. 1 student will be designated a male parent and the other will be the female parent. For each trait, students will flip a coin to determine which allele will go into the male and female gametes. Unless noted otherwise, Heads = dominant allele and Tails = recessive allele. In the spaces provided, write down the genotype and phenotype determined by the coin tosses. On the paper provided, use phenotypes for each trait to draw and color the Kremulak. - Flip 1 coin to determine the sex of your Kremulak. Questions: 1. What did the coin toss for each parent represent in this simulation? 2. Considering that each parent had one copy of each allele, what can be said regarding the genotypes of each monsters parent? 3. Which traits exhibited incomplete dominance? How could you tell?

4. Which traits exhibited codominance? How could you tell?

5. List three traits that your monster had that were homozygous dominant.

6. List three traits that your monster had that were homozygous recessive.

7. List three traits that your monster had that were heterozygous.

8. Mate your monster with that of another pair. Perform a Punnett square using the genotype for trait 16: humpback. Determine the phenotype and genotype ratios.
