Abstract
During the everyday usage of an automobile, only 1016% of the fuel energy is used to drive the carto overcome the resistance from road friction and air drag. One important loss is the dissipation of vibration energy by shock absorbers in the vehicle suspension under the excitation of road irregularity and vehicle acceleration or deceleration. In this paper we design, characterize and test a retrofit regenerative shock absorber which can efficiently recover thevibration energy in a compact space. Rare-earth permanent magnets and high permeable magnetic loops are used to configure a four-phase linear generator with increased efficiency and reduced weight. The finite element method is used to analyze the magnetic field and guide the design optimization. A theoretical model is created to analytically characterize the waveforms and regenerated power of the harvester at various vibration amplitudes, frequencies, equilibrium positions and design parameters. It was found that the waveform and RMS voltage of the individual coils will depend on the equilibrium position but the total energy will not. all the background research that went into this project idea and all the important concepts behind the working of car suspensions and battery charging mechanism. The proposed system looks to use these parts to build a mechanical-electrical system that integrates all the battery charging mechanisms in electric cars and increase the overall efficiency of power regeneration. In the design review section, we have talked about some of the challenges that this project has to still overcome.

INTRODUCTION Shocks absorbers are used to damp oscillations by absorbing the energy contained in the springs or torsion bars when the wheels of an automobile move up and down. Conventional shock absorbers do not support vehicle weight. They reduce the dynamic wheel-load variations and prevent the wheels from lifting off the road surface except on extremely rough surfaces and making possible much more precise steering and braking. The shock absorbers turn the kinetic energy of suspension motion into thermal energy, or heat energy, to be dissipated through the hydraulic fluid. However, this kinetic energy can be converted into electric energy, which in turn can be stored in a battery. This is possible if an electric shock absorber is used. This is particularly important if an electric vehicle is considered. By converting the oscillation energy and storing it in the battery, the overall efficiency of the electric drive is increasing. The energy in turn, contributes to the extension of the driving distance under the single charge. So far there has not been any publication on electric shock absorber. This paper was the only one that presented an idea of such an electromechanical shock absorber. This project is one of a few design versions of the electric shock absorbers. The objectives of the project are: 1) A review of the currently used shock absorbers in terms of their performance characteristics. 2) A qualitative comparative study of different types of electric shock absorbers and a selection of the most suitable design. 3) Design calculations in order to determine the main design parameters of the selected version. 4) Simulation of dynamics of electric shock absorber in order to determine its electromechanical performance.
