Pachim KTanim from Rabbi Yudin : In honor of Shabbos Chol Hamoed and the forthcoming Yom Tov of Shmini Atzeres:
The Talmud Sukkah (48a) lists 6 ways in which it is a Regel Befnai Atzmo a holiday onto itself. Not only is the letter Vuv droped regarding Ba-Yom Ha-Shamini (see Maftir) as opposed to all the preceding days of Sukkos, U-Vayom Hasheni, U-Vayom Hashlishi, through the seventh day, they are all connected, here the Torah designates it Bayom Hashmini. A beautiful Chasidic insight to Regel Bifnei Atzmo: Reb Yisrael of Ruzhin Zt''l applied this phrase to the famous story in the Talmud Shabbos (31a) of a prospective convert who came to Hillel asking to be taught the entire Torah "on one regel"; usually translated while I am standing on one foot. Said the Tzadik of Ruzhin, the convert to be was asking the meaning and essence of this one Regel Bifnei Atzmo, this distinctive holiday. To which Hillel answered what you would not like done to you, don't do to others, V'Ahavta L'Reiacha Ko'mocha- this is the holiday we get closest to G-d. To do so, commensurate with our love for our fellow man, can we attain intimacy with Hashem.
